Tell me why a hip-hop musician needs artist housing. Is there some kind of requirement for an actual fairly-large, well-lighted studio?

If you look at the photo you will see that the drive to keep whitey out did not work too well. Please tell me I'm not the only one who does not find the drive to keep "those people out" charming just because it is coming from "people of color"? I'm curious if it's still charming when Hipanics or Asians do it to blacks (or visa versa).

@3, don't you know? It's not racist if it's against whites.

"One sleeper-out called the process "Darwinian," and it was harsh in various ways. It's hard to say how to improve it,"

You've got to be kidding me. It's easy to say how to improve it and easy to actually do:

- Two or three or however many days of initial application intake. Collect really basic applicant information. People come and go as they please. (Better yet, let people mail them in.) No line camping. No kids line camping. No one is missing work to try to get affordable housing.
- Random lottery of initial applications
- Contact the "winners" for complete application intake
- Non-replies or bounced applications are denied
- Another random lottery of remaining initial applications
- Repeat until housing is filled.

I think we can all agree that prioritizing by who can camp out the longest or show up first to collect a number isn't fair or right.

As for the previously expressed nativist fears expressed in the Stranger's earlier article... if you don't want all the housing taken by people from Phoenix, AZ, maybe advertise the lottery only in Seattle itself.

And, you know, if you're looking for a target demographic, maybe... target that demographic. In a non-discriminatory way. You're most upset about the people getting displaced from the neighborhood? Maybe... advertise the lottery only to the neighborhood.

There are other ways of doing this. Too bad Artspace doesn't seem capable of any sort of creative thinking.

p.s. I look forward to ranting about Artspace's thousands-plus long waiting lists in a few years time. There are different ways of doing things, people!

I have lived across from two low income housing projects in the last 7 years. Both were in neighborhoods that were 98% white and Asian. In both cases the tenants were 98% black and Hispanic. I don't know how this can be justified since there are plenty of poor whites and Asians who have been in that community for generations while most of the blacks and Hispanics who were given the low income housing are transplants. Is it okay to object to this too? Not without being called a racist. It's not okay to object to minorities from other parts of the city/county/world getting most of the subsidized housing in a neighborhood that is 90% white but it is admirable to have a shit fit about it when the roles are reverse? What bs. An enormous disproportionate amount of subsidized housing and social services in Seattle goes to blacks yet they are up in arms if in a few locations most of it is going to whites? That is fucked up and greedy.

Bass and drums may be a heartbeat , but not at 2am on a week night since most of us have day jobs and need to get up at 6am. - a current Hiawatha resident with a day job.

Colin Miller, we all know that the way things were done at HRG were SOOOO much better when you were there, but you left, you even left Seattle, so why don't you just stop talking about things you no longer know about.
ps You're the only one looking forward to your rants in a few years- The rest of us are slowing trying to fix things and hoping you'll stop attacking.

Please wait...
