Did you tell them the Stranger is busy canonizing a fucking bank robber, you pussy bitch?
2
That's the very paragon of a paraphrase.

The Pope would love nothing better than to saturate the US with low wage, baby factories, loyal to himself and the Church.
4
Tomorrow the Pope is going to announce an end to anti-co traception dogma and that gay marriage is "teh best," then hop on his flying motorcycle and haul ass to Lollapalooza.

I mean, No, but I have to admit -- the Church has been moving the ball down the field.

Dan, I know you're not from Seattle, so you may not remember former Seattle Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen, exiled to a monastery in Montana for three decades by Ratzinger for being excessively respectful of Gay folks, but in your youth the American Catholic Church was the Sanctuary Movement, and in Seattle it even tried to be gay - friendly, at least by contemporary standards. The Church hasn't always been the hateful bunch of Neanderthals promoted by John Paul II and his enforcer and successor.

Pope Francis seems like a geniunely good man. The Catholic Church has a reasonable and compassionate position on rights and treatment for the poor and oppressed, so long as they aren't women, gay, molested by clergy, or interested in the health and economic benefits of birth control. I'm all for working with them in areas of agreement, but being proud of an organization that oppresses and harms so many smacks of desperation.

Cardinal O'Malley is better on some issues, including immigration and dealing with the kiddie-fiddlers, than many bishops, but he forced Catholic Charities of Boston to stop placing children with gay couples after they had done so in a limited number of instances as early as 1985β€”and after the board of Catholic Charities had voted unanimously in 2006 to continue doing so. Because of Massachusetts' anti-discrimination statute, this meant no more state funds in support of adoption services, so Catholic Charities stopped doing them entirely.

Dan:
You're a much better recovering Catholic than I am. Maybe it is because I forced myself to play along for more than 40 years....but I admire your willingness to give them the benefit of doubt.
9
I should note that Catholic charities are notable players on immigrants' side in the immigration game
10
There wouldn't be so many people searching for a livelihood but for the church's adamant stand against birth control. So maybe save your applause until we see fewer starving children and a willingness to put his money where his mouth is.

the devil is farsighted; he looks only for what is big and high and attaches himself to that; he does not look at that which is low down and beneath himself.

The Jesus I Never Knew

I'm an ex-Christian, but the image of passing the Eucharist through the border wall is very powerful. It symbolizes the impotence of borders and the unity of all.

Cardinal DiNardo in Houston has been working for immigration reform for years. He's also been working for better working conditions for low income workers (especially those in the janitorial and hospitality industries).

No love lost for the Catholic church since leaving it, but you can't paint all clergy or all the members of the hierarchy with the same brush.

@13. Back in the day (then) bishop Roger Mahoney marched with Cezar Chavez. He's not as pure as driven snow, either.

The tag on this post should probably also be "dept of broken clocks".
16
@3 You mean the Irish? No, wait, that's early 20th century bigotry. So hard to keep with the modern racist these days. Just to be clear, we're still hating gay people, Jews, and anyone whose skin color isn't white, right? I haven't been to a Klan meeting in a while so I'm not too sure anymore.

I thought Dan was smarter than to fall for Papal P.R. I guess not.

Hitler painted pretty pictures and loved his dogs.

Holy shit! I just realized so does George Bush. I rest my case.

Please wait...
