About the only comparable band as an incubator would be Earl Hines in the years before and during the bop revolution -- Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Eckstine, Sarah Vaughan, Wardell Gray, etc. Sadly, the peak of that band never recorded due to the Musicians Union strike. Or, later, the Jazz Messengers under Blakey, who included almost everybody of interest in 50s and 60s jazz at some point.
