Dan, we all know that, even if there were the possibility of a 15 year prison sentence, all the men you listed wouldn't be serving that time, even if they were convicted. Because Jesus would forgive them. And once Jesus has forgiven you, well... what judge would want to sentence someone who has already been forgiven by Jesus? What warden would dare imprison such a person? What jail could even hold a(n adulterous) man who has already been totally, completely forgiven by Jesus?

But religions evolve into science-resistent versions of their past selves. Sometimes by ceding ground (like liberal protestant denominations do regarding scientific advances) and that's generally a good thing, or by inoculating the faithful with sound bites about a 6,000-year-old Earth, etc which just creates more problems.

Social conditions and our understanding of the Cosmos is changing so quickly, I wonder if religions will have to go back to the more explicitly fickle Gods like the Greeks and Romans had.
