It's nothing new to unveil products not in Seattle, I believe there's a story of Bill Gates announcing Excel in a stained ruffled shirt and day's beard on Wall Street.
I've been impressed by Numbers on the iPad. The interactivity of the graphs is fun and the interface is surprisingly usable. But it isn't quite a laptop replacement without a keyboard and a larger screen. My laptop is still essential for getting work done efficiently.
It surprises me a little that Microsoft is jumping in here. I can't imagine Numbers has more than a sliver of sales. And it seriously undercuts their core platform selling point which is continuity of software. It feels like a major concession to me.
