I love both Sawant and Dominic for their courage!
2
Best. Council. Person. Ever.
We need 6 more just like her.
3
As if the mega rich of Seattle, King County or anywhere else give a fuck.
4
This is one of the many reasons I voted for her. She cuts through the usual Council bullshit and says something true and meaningful. We need more open and honest debate in this city, we're too scared of it, and her presence has already made politics and government in this city much better.
5
The 3 year phase in for small business is a good idea. That gives them time to move out of Seattle.
6
Damn, she's good. Exactly what we needed.
7
So... 15 Now!... Er... Eventually!!! (But phased-in)

It's awesome how much this issue is perceived as being entirely in the hands of one minor-party, first-term council member. Everybody's holding their breath waiting for Sawant's next move. Not the other eight council members, not the mayor. For get about the governor, the clowns down in Olympia.

Sawant is the leader here. That's how much better we could do, if we replaced the crew of empty suits we have with people with an ounce of vision and ambition. They don't need to be socialists; what if we had plain old Democrats who simply had the will to make something of themselves?

@8, there is not/will not be an endless supply of better-paying jobs at big business. In addition, some of those better-paying jobs may involve mandatory split shifts, mandatory on-calls, Little Napoleon supervisors, etc. Small businesses may offer a better working environment, more flexibility, work more closely aligned with a person's interests and skills, etc.

I'd expect movement in both directions, between higher- and lower-paying jobs, for many reasons. It's somewhat analogous to the "job lock" described in relation to health-insurance options—there is now lots of anecdotal evidence (which I expect will soon be documented in a scholarly manner) of people who have obtained coverage through the Affordable Car Act leaving dead-end jobs to start new businesses or take jobs more advantageous for one reason or another, as they no longer fear the loss of affordable benefits.

But can she fix the police department? With her fifteen dumb more popular than me dollars? Or ban helicopters? I thought so.

Quick, look over there.
12
@8 Because quality of work environment means something to people. Because three years of gradual raises at a small company with good working conditions may be preferable than $15/hour right now at Target. Of course, some may really need the big boost immediately (say, if you're supporting kids on minimum wage), but for those whose hands aren't forced, the phase-in means that everyone gets there eventually.

I like council member Sawant. When you were describing the other council members behavior's I thought of term - Laying Around like Lumps of Coal.
14
You elected her to swing for the fences, she's swinging for the fences.
15
Go Kshama, go!
16
@9 - But here's what you're missing, Democrats *wouldn't* do something like this. That's why they're Democrats. They're more interested in protecting their position and people that line their pockets than rocking the boat.

I’m so glad she entertains you. Now, let’s govern the city. Sawant exploited the strong social justice ethics of Seattle citizens to get elected and is now dividing us politically instead of creating any kind of momentum where we can actually work towards solutions. She doesn’t abide by capitalism as a rule. This is poison. There is no value to electing representatives to our government who only want to dismantle the system. The voters of Seattle are already seeing her for what she is.

Please wait...
