Maybe Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Seattle should be more consistently biblical and immediately fire all female teachers. While they're at it, they can fire all the divorcees, and those who have had sex before marriage, use contraception, and/or masturbate. Now let's see, after all the "sinners" have been fired who will be left to instill those precious Catholic values into the little Catholic children's impressionable minds? Inquiring minds want to know...

Apparently her job is to focus on keeping her libido and reproductive system under control. Oh, and rattle those pot and pans.
3
NOT being in their homes, or beds, or company would give them the silence their God granted them. And everyone can be happy.
4
Are you listening, Sarah Palin?
5
Women aren't allowed to go to stonings either.
6
@5 unless they are the star.
7
And now you know why so many virgins were pregnant by gods.
8
This verse is used to support my parents' synod's governance system. Only adult male members can vote on church matters and my mom is down with it because who needs a voice when you have faith?
9
And would it kill her to grab me a goddamn beer from the fridge?
10
The world would be better off if people followed this advice.

How much trouble is caused by women running their mouths off, making their men do stupid crap they'd never do on their own?

The answer: all of it.
11
a close family member told me that this is dom/submissive structure is only "symbolic" but, when pressed on details, he said the structure IS activated when big decisions are made in their family. When asked what are "big decisions"? he responded "when I feel it is important to our family"

.... and remember THESE FOLKS believe their homes and, by extension, our entire country should operate this way.

Congratulations Goldstein! At least you're taking out of context a New Testament verse this time!

Now are you going to launch a multi year hate campaign on Islam or Buddhism? No? Still a bigot? Well all right then.
13
Finally! A biblical passage we can all agree with.
14
@12 when leaders from those religions start testifying before congress on legislation, then they'll get the same scrutiny.
15
All due respect to @12, context does not actually improve this verse. Here's the complete chapter 1Timothy 2 (wimminz mentioned starting in verse 9):

1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;

4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

7 Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.

8 I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.

9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.

12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.

14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
16
Seattleblahs, shouldn't you be at church, exerting authority over your highly theoretical family?
17
Well I read that book every page
And then i put it away
Said I don't think so
It makes slaves of all of womankind
And corpses of men
And I just don't know
18
@15, I think the relevant context is SHUT UP, WOMAN.
19
@18: ...GET ON MY HORSE.
20
@10 Still a virgin, huh? We'll, chin up. I'm sure there's someone out there just right for you...
21
You'd be surprised how offended female Jehovah's Witnesses get when you repeat this verse at them after everything they say.

The next time one appears at your door, you really should try it.
22
@21 I dunno, verse 14 and 15 sound pretty good at offending too.... tell the female JW that women are more readily deceived but if she bares a child that sort of makes up for it. Then you can ask if she's ovulating.
23
for a 2000 year old work written by a bunch of quasi-abstemious men living in a cave i'd say the sentiments hold up fairly nicely alongside the modern day GOP
24
Fuck that noise.
25
@9,
And a sammich, too!
28
What a horribly sexist chapter. It's amazing that women put up with this, call it "the word of God", and bring their daughters along.

Women were important leaders during the first century of Christianity. The Timothy letters were apparently written later, the the author slapping on the pseudonym of Paul presumably to give it authority. By that time the men had taken the rein and the early role of women had been forgotten.

GOLDY YOU NITWIT, STOP WITH THE REPEATS. This was already on SLOG Bible Study in 2011.

@15: What kind of two-bit theologist says that men are superior to women BASED ON Adam being created before Eve? If you actually READ Genesis, you'll notice that humanity was actually the last thing created, and that other animals (which we are given dominion over) came before humankind. By that logic, Eve would be the polished version. Also, Adam was deceived as well. The serpent told Eve the fruit was safe to eat and she believed it. She then told Adam the fruit was safe to eat and he believed it too.

Speaking of the Fall, Genesis 2-3 is interesting in my opinion because God lies to Adam and Eve. He tells them that if they eat the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge they will die, but this is not, strictly speaking, true. This raises some interesting issues!
30
@29. One traditional way of reading the story of Adam and Eve was that she was deceived, but Adam was only (in the words of John Milton) "fondly overcome with female charm." So he was the first man to think with the little head instead of the big one. How this became an argument for the moral or intellectual superiority of men over women continues to escape me.
32
Goldy, as venomlash pointed out you posted this verse before. To avoid such humiliation in the future, I suggest you download a spreadsheet of the King James bible from Spreadsheet.com and then color fill the ones you've done.
34
@32: Goldy knows he's doing repeats. He's acknowledged it in previous weeks. Maybe you should keep a spreadsheet and color it in, if it's so important to you. If churches can keep doing repeats, so can Goldy.
35
@35, repeats are lazy when there are thousands of verses of crap.

it'd be great to have Verses Versus. Highlight two or more contradictions, fight them out.

Please wait...
