The world is full of depressing places.

Jesus that last clip....
3
Demonstrating once again that the biggest shitholes are also the most homophobic places on earth.

I know it's too early to celebrate or even let our guard down, and I'm not saying this is a trivial matter or anything, but to me it feels good that I can start to laugh off this kind of ignorance.

The decline of straight-up homophobic bigotry has begun, and more and more the (Americans, at least) in these clips are nothing but a sideshow.

U-S-A! U-S-A!

India, Nigeria, Uganda -

All three countries were victims of brutal British colonialism. All three places had a history of tolerating or embracing homosexuality before then. Harsh anti-homosexuality laws were enforced on all three countries for the first time from British invaders.

All three are reacting against continued colonialist behavior from the West (obviously, in an unfortunate way).

This is a result of Europe's past and Europe & America's present. Don't get so smug about America and Europe (where we were passing similar laws 20, 30, 40 years ago).

@6 Um. In 2013 same sex marriage is legal in the UK - at least in England and Wales.
8
Given the global climate, I'm surprised anyone chooses to be gay anymore.
9
@4 - I know what you mean. I remember my grandfather telling me about when he could finally laugh about sweat shops. Suck it, third world, not our problem anymore!

7: I'm talking about history. The UK banned homosexuality until the last law was repealed in 1982. Margaret Thatcher passed a "protect the children from gays" law very similar to Russia's in 1988. Back when Britain conquered and colonized India, Uganda, and Nigeria, amongst others, homosexuality was criminalized and they instituted laws against homosexuality, including maiming or the death penalty, in most of their colonies. So did most other European colonizers. The UK had a "kill the gays" law that was enforced and enacted through the start of major colonization in the 1800's and passed these laws along to their colonies. Before European intervention, homosexuality and being trans was legal and very accepted in many of the colonies.

@10: Also, God Loves Uganda details how Uganda's anti-gay laws currently are in large part due to CURRENT American evangelical colonialism. They're losing here, so they're exporting their values.
12
6/10: Yes, these places have a history as colonial subjects. But they're all grown up now, and we can hold them responsible for their vicious homophobia.

Anyone attending the Olympics of Homophobia is incurring some really negative karma. Collecting bad karma while being in an area targeted by terrorists is a bad idea. Don't be the person who collected bad karma and got blown up in an area targeted by terrorists.

@10 Oh. Well. History.

The US was an English colony too. So I guess we can use that excuse, right? No consequences or responsibility for any asshole thing we do... excepting those nasty Brits. Because. You know. History!

HOORAY!

OR. At some point, to be a big grown up in a big grown up world, you have to shed the past, pick up the gauntlet you've been given, and face how the world is now and own up to your own responsibilities.

FUCKING AUTOPLAY

Please wait...
