Hah, like those conservatives would let social services go to ethnic minorities. They want community services destroyed and dismantled, not all given to the people they disrespect just as much as the "illegals".

Agree with #2. Illegal immigrants will do the work Americans won't. That's because Americans won't work 20 hours overtime a week off the clock. Nor should they. Illegal immigrants will also refuse such treatment when they have legal leverage to do so. Canada will take in a certain number of political and economic refugees but besides that they will not grant work visas to foreigners who do not have any specialized skills that are sorely lacking among citizens. We should have the same thing.
Common sense tells you that if you add millions of people to the labor pool which is already full of unemployed and underemployed Americans with the same set of skills it will be to the disadvantage of those people.
Yes, these millions of people would complete for the same low wage jobs that millions of out of work poor could do. It would drive down wages and standard of living for those people. Don't kill the messenger "progressives".

...and furthermore, what drives salaries up? Demand? Shortages? If a small business owner or a fast food franchise owner offers a substandard wage, a wage so low that no one will accept the position, the owner has two choices: hire no one and take on that responsibility him/herself or raise the offered salary making the position more attractive. That's how it's supposed to work.

But imagine the influx of a pool of potential workers who will take the low wage (or even work for less). What does that do to the system? What does that do to an American worker's bargaining ability?

I agree that something must be done that's fair to all concerned, but the US seems to have reached critical mass as far as accepting great quantities of new workers from other countries. Maybe it's because our population keeps doubling in ever shorter time spans.

And what about the government of Mexico? Why isn't it doing more to create a more just economy there? Wouldn't most people prefer to live and work in their own countries if they could?
