PS - just as I cannot speak for the whole music/ nightlife community, nor can McGinn try to take credit for the change in atmosphere around nightlife in Seattle. First, that change is the result of the work of a ton of people, mostly outside of government. Second, Many members on the City Council have worked in support of nightlife and music for many years, far prior to McGinn being Mayor. And of course, the largest change in the atmosphere is having a new city attorney - Pete Holmes - who is a major change from the last CA Tom Carr. And Pete Holmes has strongly endorsed Ed Murray, as did the Council members who have supported music and nightlife tirelessly.

more lies, heresay and mis-truths from meinert. good grief, get an effing life, man.

Can we all just agree that John Roderick is a hipster douchebag who is a completely trolltastic moron who makes shitty music and should be completely ignored?
4
I knew he started the Crocodile way back in the day, but until googling him just now I didn't realize Everard's day job is being a real estate partner at the corporate law firm that bought the old funeral home across from Bauhaus. He's come a long way since our days in flannel!

This is fun to watch. Seeing as how they are all sleazebags, we get to pick while sleazebag to agree with, and why. I side with Dave Meinert, the adult in the room. Forget about any principles or reasons he gives; this is a sleazebag who knows realpolitik. He sees that McSchwinn is going to get buried, and at the risk of being the last rodent in the water he's decided not to go down with the captain.

It is corrupt and sleazy? Of course! But the nightclub "industry," to use the term loosely, is corrupt and sleazy. So is McSchwinn, and so is Murray, and so is the City Council. So when I see someone(s) here making such a transparently self-interested move, I can only applaud them for their burst of candor, even if it's only implied.
6
@3 That's quite a trollish thing to say. What did the guy do?
7
So just to be clear, who does speak for the music community?

Perhaps as a community service The Stranger could have a webpage wherein each "community" has its speaker listed. Then, at least, we'll know who speaks-for to associate each community with its speaker; and that would be, of course... uh... Cienna, or possibly Dominic..? or Goldy! definitely Goldy.

I love John Roderick, and I don't care what anyone has to say about it.

Everard is hilarious. Even though he has donated to Murray, like Meinert in this campaign, The Stranger should also do some research and they'll find he donated to and did fundraising for Joe Mallahan when he ran against McGinn last time. Meinert may not speak for Everard, but Everard surely seems to like McGinn even less than Meinert. Odd to see McGinn hold up a guy who never supported him and still doesn't as the one counter to the 19 people who endorsed his opponent. Ouch.
10
McGinn's botching of SPD reform is going to cost him the election.
11
#10, that won't matter. The cop-hating hipsters know that Murray is at least as much of a law 'n order guy, and will be especially happy to crack the crackheads downtown, i.e. your friends and theirs. So they'll vote for McSchwinn. So will the bikesters, and so will the Stranger's staff. Which, in the end, will amount to maybe 40% or so.

Really, the "SPD reform" vote doesn't go to Murray. He's more pro-cop than McSchwinn ever was. What doomed McSchwinn was his kow-towing to the grand coalition of bikesters, hipsters, derelicts, developers, and drunks. It takes a lot to get anyone in this city to pay attention to local issues, but once people took a look at McSchwinn and his crowd, the guy was toast.

Stick a toothpick in that fat sausage. He's done.

Nightlife agenda?

Shouldn't a Seattle Politician have a 24 Hour All Time Zone World Agenda?

13
Hmmm, wouldn't have put Neumos and Spitfire under the same umbrella ....
14
Two wealthy white dude bar owners definitely do not speak for the nightlife or music communities. Ugh. And can Meinert not learn a lesson about getting into politics? This is like the 20th public political stance he's taken that's backfired on him. Does he use too much of his own products?
15
Wow, Meinert, you threw out a lot of bullshit in your rebuttal. I don't mind business owners wearing their politics on their sleeve, but I cannot stand dishonesty, and you have several dishonest statements here.

I've been going to the 5 Point for 20 years, but will have to rethink my patronage in the future.
16
I find Everard's statement worth posting...

...because it supports my preferred candidate.
17
@1: Pete Holmes for Mayor, City Attorney, and all 9 city council seats in 2013!!
18
@DOUG: Either explain your public accusations of "dishonesty", or GO FUCK YOURSELF.

@18

Such passion!

By the way, I know I came late to the thread the other day and you may not have seen my request, but could you explain what assumptions you think black have about privilege, or would you prefer to go fuck yourself?

@15 - what points do you think are dishonest? Seems McGinn tried to trot out one club owner to disagree with Meinert and 18 others, and it turns out that club owner not only lied in his statement but also actually also supports Murray AND supported Mallahan in the last election. Meinert pretty much slapped Everard down. If you 're going to call him dishonest, be specific.
21
@seatackled: I've seen enough "conversations" about racism to know that taking up your question isn't going to produce a very satisfying result. But, I'll respond anyway.

First, the term "privilege" is a vague and largely meaningless abstraction used by those who want to sound like intellectuals without doing the hard work of saying, clearly and specifically, what it is they mean.

Second, if you truly want to understand the nature of power (a far more useful concept than privilege), you'll have to spend some time listening to and observing those who have it. Most of what the powerless have to say about power are stories they've spun up in to make themselves feel better.
22
Hmmm.... wasn't one of those bar-owning Murray endorsers one of the douches who was pushing McKenna last year?

Why, yes it was!
