Cienna - thanks for covering an important endorsement for Murray, the Stranger has missed a few.

I know you want to dismiss it because it doesn't fit the mold of The Stranger's all McGinn all the time meme, but people should be aware that this endorsement can't be dismissed as one that happened just because Murray is in the lead. First, many like me donated to and/or endorsed Murray in the primary, and second, SNMA members have never as a group endorsed in a primary.

We truly feel that Ed will be the more effective Mayor on nightlife and music issues. He will be the Mayor that can build the coalition to pass extended hours for bars, get rid of the Opportunity to Dance tax when it comes back in 4 years, and make the streets safer for our customers.

And I for one am psyched that Seattle will soon have our first Mayor from Capitol Hill (and not the suburbs!), and our first gay Mayor.
2
McGinn's failure in pursuing later bar hours wasn't his fault. There was no chance the liquor board was going to approve that, especially after they'd just handed over control of their precious liquor monopoly. Maintaining bar hours and other strict regulations (ask ANY nightclub owner with bottle service how much of a hassle and business-killer those rules are) is all they have left.
3
Chali - the liquor board started 2 in favor, one against extended hours. One member flipped because she didn't believe Seattle, due to the way it is run, could deal with the issues that would come up. I think she was wrong, but that was her take.
4
McGinn lives in Greenwood. That's not a "suburb", unless your idea of the City ends north of Belltown.
5
Unfortunately, I think there will always be an "excuse" on the WSLCB's end as to why it shouldn't happen. That's just me though.
6
#4 Clearly it's not a suburb. In fact, I'm pretty sure Dominic includes Greenwood in his "downtown" crime stats.
7
This is delicious. When even Dave Meinert, a McGinn boot licker from square one, hops over to Murray, can it be any clearer? Christ, not even the drunken driving lobby is on McGinn's side. What's next, "Third Avenue Crack Dealers for Murray?"
8
But wait: The Cascade Bicycle Club and the Seattle Bike Blog are still sniffing Mikey's spandex. That ought to bring him 4%!
9
#6 That made me laugh :)
10
So on the one hand, one of your core advertiser blocs just told you who they want you to promote. On the other hand, you're really the only game in town for the demographic they're targeting. (The Seattle Weekly? Puh-lease!) I hope this will be enough to permit you to maintain at least a small degree of editorial and journalistic independence, unlike the Blethering sycophants at another local rag I can think of.
11
Don't worry #10, soon enough The Stranger will declare that Murray's their friend, and Murray has always been their friend. And something about four legs bad.
12
There's no way Murray's going to get the hours extended, and the council doesn't want the dance tax to go away forever, since it's a convenient looming threat to hold over clubs and bars. If Murray wins, a year from now he'll either be viewed as "unable to work with the council" or as "in the back pocket of developers".
13
I frankly think many of these bar owners are forgetting how much better Mike McGinn has been on music and nightlife issues than Greg Nickels was, who (like Ed Murray) was owned and operated by the type of people who most certainly DON'T want things like extended bar hours.
14
Every time I have seen Murray interviewed he comes across like a zombie. What drug is he on? Mayor McGinn made mistakes early on so what. He is still willing to stick his neck out and not do the popular thing sometimes. Murray strikes me as a brown noser for business. Murray being gay isn't a good enough reason to vote for him. I will cast my ballot for McGinn.
15
#13, it's true, the majority doesn't want extended bar hours. Meinert and his crew know it. They also know that if they don't hop on board the winning bus, they won't have a ghost of a chance. It's not about longer hours. They won't get that. It's about the myriad other things they need from the city, day in and day out.

Meinert and his cronies know that McGinn is going to get his ass kicked, and quite badly. This is purely risk reduction on their part. I bet the bicycle lobbyists are sweatin' up a storm right now. At least the Meinert types had the brains to lie low. The bikesters are tied to Mayor McSchwinn, and when he goes down they'll be in a world of hurt.
16
A lot of those were early McGinn partners in the Gun Free Sticker program

http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archive…
Neumos, Barboza, 5 Point, Wildrose, Big Marios, Lost Lake ... although since you could never bring guns into the over 21 bar area it was a silly thing to make a big hullaballo about.
17
@15, world of hurt? Cyclists? I'm not a McGinn supporter but where are you coming up with your crap from anyway? Is Murray coming after our bikes? Is he ordering all cars to run down any cyclist they see? And who the fuck are you anyway? I've never seen you post on Slog before
18
When you are reduced to challenging the motives of those endorsing the candidate you don't like with absolutely no basis to do so other than pure speculation and conjecture you have lost. Congrats Mayor Murray. I was pulling for Peter but looks like you have it.
19
#17, a world of political hurt. You generally don't want to be on the side that lost, especially when you're up against someone who's spent a bunch of time in the legislature making deals. Tell me, once he's elected, what will Murray owe to the asshole bike lobby? Nothing, is the answer. And who the fuck are you, anyway? The queen of the Slog?
20
@17 its noicons/misterg/etc AKA lamest troll ever.
21
suck it Goldy
22
10 rich white dudes (and 1 rich white lady) support Ed Murray, who is willing to be bought. Shocking.

http://www.capitolhillseattle.com/2013/1…

Can you please stop calling this lobby "Nightlife Advocates"? What are they advocating? They're trying to sell more booze. Call them the Alcohol Sales Lobby.
23
Which of the two candidates wants to raise minimum wage?

Follow the money.
24
#23, they've both endorsed a $15 minimum wage, but neither one of them means it. This might be a matter of the city government having no power over the matter. But if you want to imagine differently, go ahead and imagine. It won't be the first time for The Stranger and the bulk of its communist comment section.
25
"He thinks we're communists!"
"We're not communists--we're HOMOSEXUALS!"
26
Cody/MisterG/Unbrainwashed - Your dick must be raw by now with all this one handed fantasy writing you're doing. Repeat after me "SLOG is not a masturbation tool." Seriously, you're like a creepy flasher but instead of showing off your pathetic junk (sorry about your penis), you expose us to the cesspool of your imbecilic mind instead.

@19 - Yes, Last of the Time Lords is the queen of slog. Who the fuck are you to deflect a question from her (or him)?
27
Well, count me as at least one of the socialist fags out there who can't wait to see that sanctimonious, ineffective douchewaffle of a mayor kicked out.
28
I am positive that the owners of Trinity Nightclub and Von Trapps are not people I want to be on the same side as.
29
Remember, too, that Marcus Charles endorsed Rob McKenna for governor. I wonder how many others on this list are Republicans for Ed Murray?
30
@24 I'm thinking of McGinn's stunt in West Seattle for that grocery store.
31
#30, the stunt was completely meaningless, and McSchwinn knew it. The only people who pretended to take it seriously were his ass-kissers at The Stranger.
32
#26, you have quite the thing for dick. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
33
is meinert really claiming that the SMNA hasn't endorsed in a primary? the stranger's archives paper says otherwise. oh looky, another suburbanite trying to steer city politics...
http://www.thestranger.com/lineout/archi…
34
I'm just curious if all of you cynics here could ever believe maybe the reason that we have endorsed Ed Murray is because we think he's going to be the best choice for Seattle on a whole? Crazy since so many of you are conspiracy theorists, but think about it.

We do think about more than just what our jobs are.

For instance, Murray's #1 Priority is Public Safety. I'm going out on a limb and have to think that even a lot of you cynics agree that's a great thing to work on in our city.

I endorsed Ed Murray for Mayor and was at the press conf. as well.
35
lol like Murray has experience in public safety! Christ, why can't my music venues stay out of politics. Really don't want to boycott neumos because it is run by a fucking anti-progressive ignoramus
36
34: You're seriously saying you held an endorsement press conference as a bar owner and nightlife leader to endorse Murray for reasons that have nothing to do with owning a bar or nightlife? You did it just because alcohol salesmen just happen to know what's best for society overall?
37
#34, yeah, we'll take you at face value. Did I tell you that I'm from the government and I'm here to help, and that I won't come in your mouth?
38
Did I say that ? Nope don't think I did. I said it's not the only thing that I based my decision on.

Please wait...
