Better than Popenfuerer Ratzi: Not quite the Lowest. Bar. Evar. but...
2

I'd appreciate if you would put the word "absolutely" under the fold. It connotes Absolut Vodka, and my shrink says to avoid relationships that will spark past experiences of being raped by Cossacks.
3
The energy that Joey Ratz spent on covering up child rape and blaming the victims leads me to the conclusion that he was a child rapist himself. Why else would he push the RC church so close to oblivion if it wasn't about self-preservation?
4
Best Pope Ever!

No, seriously.

It's a low bar ...

@3 You ask a reasonable question, but who says Ratzi is reasonable? He could be a narcissistic, arrogant, sociopath who refused to change course simply because he CAN'T be wrong. He could really believe all that penance and forgiveness shit, and think that priests actually deserve to be given a million "second" chances as long as they do a confession.

Help me think of some other crazy explanations! I mean, you're probably correct, but "rational actor" as the universal human condition is a fiction found only in economic modeling. The last place I'd look for rational people is in the leadership of a religion. Ignoring reality (or pretending to) is pretty much the first job requirement.
6
this is like blaming everything on george bush. still.
7
Ratzi wrote "according to sociological research, the percentage of priests guilty of these crimes is no higher than in other comparable professional categories."

Perhaps so. But teachers are fired and lose their lisences to teach. Medical personnel lose their lisences and their ability to practice. Both are subject to arrest, trial and jail time. Priests? They get a new parish and, when the time comes, a comfortable retirement.
8
If they're going to EXCOMMUNICATE priests for having radical opinions about church matters, they should at least do the same for priests who rape children.
9
@8 Seriously! That is the real message here: thought crimes will be vigorously persecuted and punished while sex with a child maybe gets you shuffled off to another parish.
10
Ratzinger wasn't a Nazi

he was a child who grew up at a time when he was legally required to be a member of the hitler youth

if you hold him accountable for that, you're an asshole
11
Gee, I would consider excommunication a badge of great honor and distinction. I never joined on my own but was brainwashed into their cult as a child.
12
@10 We know, but that's not funny.
13
What exactly then should His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI have done?
14
@13 Defrocked the child rapists and turned over all relevant evidence to the police.
15
It's true.. a catholic priest is as likely to abuse a child as a Stranger Staffer. And we all know which organization is more likely to hold their employees accountable
16
I guess he just can't get it through his skull that Catholic clergy aren't supposed to have sex AT ALL, solo or with willing participants of legal age. If a priest cannot abide by that fundamental prohibition, then he should leave the priesthood.

To compare priests' sexual criminality to that of other people in positions of power over children is to compare golden apples with oranges ... where the golden apples should always be impervious to tarnish.

Please wait...
