I hope I'm not the only one in America who avoids "reality" shows like this, like the burning truckloads of manure they remind me of.

Aren't there video games to play, birds to feed, bars to hit, or old movies to watch? Who needs this shit?

And, as far as the "news" goes... Poorly-spoken airhead from Texas behaves in a racist manner. Well, I am just shocked, shocked, I say.

@1, I'd heard only rumors about this, but it's nice to see this comeuppance anyway. David, thanks for posting!
3
@1 I was typing that very same post, word for word.

Plus...

Chen really got her good, huh.

'Do you understand how those comments can be hurtful to some?'

OMG: Did she really say the 'h' word?
Meeeeow.

I think the Fox news and right wing bubble causes many of its denizens to believe their racist beliefs are acceptable, held by a majority of citizens, and somehow immune from criticism under a very mistaken understanding of free speech rights. In truth the majority of citizens find these beliefs abhorrent.
5
What's fucked up is I believe her when she says she was oblivious to her own bigotry. Happily, she won't have the same luxury of obliviousness to her own unemployment. Not to mention her own status as pariah. Enjoy yourself, idiot.
6
texan trash.

"i'm southern. i can say horrible things but don't mean it".

she clearly went to the paula deen school for dipshit chicks.
7
I was hoping the she would get her shit fed to her. Good on Julie Chen for not letting her get away with that.

You guys are aware that the contestants for shows like this are selected SPECIFICALLY for their melodramatic nature, ignorance, inability to get along with others, inflexible attitudes, and emotional instability, right?

I'm not even being sarcastic. A friend works in the casting agency that contracts for several popular reality shows and they're told to find people who will cause as much media controversy as possible (also top on their list is to find the most attractive to look at of these kinds of people). Not that that should be at all surprising to anyone.

What an idiot that woman is. She says her remarks were taken out of context. I wish Julie Chen would have asked what the context would be that would keep those comments from being racist or homophobic.

(And I'm reminded of one of my favorite Dolly Parton quotes: "I'm not offended by all the dumb blonde jokes because I know I'm not dumb... and I also know that I'm not blonde.")

"That hurts me that I would say something like that."

What the fuck is that supposed to mean???

Thank Chaos I've never been interviewed on TV. I cant' even imagine the kind of incoherent crap I would babble in front of a camera. That's about the only explanation I can think of for that sentence.

I tried to watch this season, and made it about a week in. I just can't. Every season has some terrible people, but this season was almost all assholes.
12
I'm really liking this trend lately where idiots say completely racist things, try to stand by them, but insist they're not really racists. Their lack of self awareness is mind-blowing.
13
@10

Think the "Naggers" episode of South Park.
14
Oh fuck Julie Chen.

She gets a huge pay check from this shitty show that, by it's nature, is designed to be as sensationalized as possible. This "Reality" show deliberately casts scum of the earth people and it's specifically edited to highlight any nonsense they spew.

Chen's manufactured outrage is all part of the idiotic train-wreck-as-entertainment PR.

If there were people working on that show (or watching it for that matter) with any integrity AT ALL... well, they wouldn't work for (or watch) that insipid horseshit in the first place.
15
@8 and 14 actually captured my sentiments best.

Manufactured reality...
...manufactured racism...
....manufactured host's shock...
......manufactured response...

All crap.

When the UK Big Brother show went through its own racism scandal a few years ago, they had the incredible Stewart Lee ready to react to it.

http://youtu.be/sZn4Xv9MC6Y

NOTE: It should be made clear that what Stewart says Russell Brand said is not what Russell Brand actually said. (That actually caused a minor controversy in the UK) But the fact that Russell Brand was called upon to say ANYTHING was really the point...

PS: This is just a short segment of the longer bit that Stewart Lee did on this subject. It's from his "41st Best Stand-Up" special...and it is a MUST for any comedy fan. You need to know about Pestival, about what a Quillow is, about whether sardines come in tomato sauce, about ...and about the values of the Car Phone Warehouse.
17
That's considered a grilling? No wonder journalism today is so pathetic.
18
Don't like either of them, and their shoes are atrocious.

I watch Big Brother. There, I said it. Whew, that feels much better. "Aryan" was targeted by my favorite contestant Elissa and booted specifically because of her bigotry. She was part of the "mean girls" who treated the Black houseguests like shit and who are now getting their comeuppance.
That interview with Julie was very satisfying to dedicated viewers (although she couldn't tell Aryan too much about the outside world, that's the problem).

The parodies of the show are actually better than the show.

Man, she's ugly. I can tell she's superficial garbage just by looking at her photo. (I haven't watched the show.)

My guess is that she got casted to appeal to the considerable fellow garbage portion of the audience, and to hook everybody else with the fascination of staring at this walking disaster.

And did it work? Did the casting agents know what they were doing? I'd have to look at the ratings, but it sounds like they've been generating a lot of interest. They won't be able to get away with the racist-cast-member trick too many times, though.

@8 Yes.
21
Meh, kinda let down. I was hoping for Maury Povich style throw down with her screaming "You don't know me!" and flipping the bird.
