How much of Holmes' conduct is guided by his hatred of the mayor? For example, when McGinn wanted to go after Ian Birk, did Holmes hide behind the RCW because he doesn't like the mayor?
2
What a fucking baby.
3
Of course, in Strangerland, McGinn shamelessly hogging publicity in election season is not being divisive. Because McGinn can do no wrong.
4
I'm biased (because I applaud the city attorney's work for the most part), but I find this kind of directness refreshing. Let's not pretend we're all on the same page when we're not. If McGinn is inserting himself into this process, a process he fought bitterly, then I can understand Holmes's annoyance and maybe it's best done another time. Stuff gets rescheduled all the time.
5
Isn't there a "ask the mayor" show on tonight ? Is it too late to ask McGinn if he and Holmes would carry this on for another 4 years ?
6
It is kind of funny, though.
7
Yeah, Dominic, the LAPD and NYPD are all fixed up. Maybe when the SPD no longer bothers white folk like yourself, you'll claim that they're fixed up, too.
8
Wait, a canceled presser on drunk driving means SPD reform is in jeopardy thanks to Holmes? Okeydoke.
9
@7 Ouch! Touche!
10
That is really small and petty of Holmes.
11
@7) Don't be silly. I never said the LAPD and NYPD were "all fixed up." I said Rice had helped there. And there is no question LA is in a helluva lot better shape now than before.

@8) Don't be silly--I didn't say that either. I said the narrative that McGinn is the obstacle in these policing matters doesn't pan out in this case. It appears to be Holmes who won't work with people. You caught the same crazy bug that @7 caught.
12
This kind of press conference including a mayor is standard by any measure. Pete Holmes just looks childish and petty. I wonder if this also has anything to do with the issue about refusing to prosecute repeat offenders.

C'mon Pete. We elected you to be better than this.

13
unless they're announcing funding for enforcement of ignition interlocks, they aren't cracking down on drunk driving. the poor folks who got run over on 75th were killed by a drunk with an ignition interlock order, but who hadn't installed it, and no one checked.

instead, SDOT just restriped 75th for 20 blocks.
14
Since there is no story, we are left with the Stranger's flagrant Confirmation Bias. Two legs bad four legs good.
15
Oh please, a hissy fit over a drunk driving press conference? Pete Holmes can go insert himself.
16
@11, sorry, your framing struck me as thin. I should have let it pass.
17
Plus, I've just sworn off carbs for the jillionth time, so am lashy-outy today.
18
I so wish I could do this at my work.
19
Its amazing that these guys, either of them, think anyone was paying attention to some SPD conf
20
I always say that people don't really grow up into adults. They just grow older.
21
Same thing happened when McGrimm attacked former governor Christine Gregoire and Democrats in Olympia, nobody wanted to be seen with the guy. The federal lawsuit about SPD abuse, Holmes had to drag him kicking and screaming into settlement, so its no surprise he endorsed Murray and no surprise he refused to act professional since McGrimm did nothing but that in the first 3 years of his term.
22
what @2 said. The mayor has every right to be at a press conference regarding the police, election year or not. Unless we're missing something here, I don't see how a presser has anything to do with "the process" (is that like "The Method"?)
23
It is now and will forever be a mistake that the City Attorney is an elected office. As with the AG/Governor, the Mayor should be able to rely on the City Attorney as an ally; the City Attorney is the Attorney for the Mayor and the rest of the City Departments, over which McGinn is the Executive Officer. From the beginning, Pete Holmes has tried to turn the office of City Attorney into something else, something beyond the scope of what has generally been understood as the role of his office. He's made the office political, and regardless of who you think is to blame, has not been a trusted confidant for the Mayor. Like it or not, elected or not, there is an hierarchical relationship between the CA and the Mayor, and the City does not function properly when the Mayor can't reliably consult with HIS attorney.
24
@16. No, Tom, you are entirely correct. The framing is thin. And the picture is totally out of focus. Carb loss be damned.
25
LAPD is in a lot better shape than it used to be and that's because of William Bratton. Will somebody please get him on the phone and offer him a goddamn job??!!!??!? Srsly.

Timothy, I disagree with you there. The city atty absolutely should be an elected office and the only public office that should NOT be elected are judges, any and all judges should not be elected. All the others are answerable to the public. That's my policy.

Drunk driving is a terrible scourge but people don't need jail; they need treatment and lots of it and then jail if that doesn't work.
26
Rereading, Tim, what is it about the notion that the city attorney represents the people of seattle and is not the mayor's personal lawyer, not even in his official role as Hizzoner don't you understand?
27
@26…you simply don't know what you're taking about. I get hat the City Attorney campaigned on the populist slogan that he would be the people's attorney; but hat is not be role outlined in the City Charter nor is it the traditional role as has been understood by past CA's.

I didn't say the City Attorney is the personal attorney of the Mayor, but he is the official lawyer of all City government, including the Mayor.

But, if you'd like to quote me the section of the City Charter that makes the CA "the people's attorney" I'll look forward to reading that.
28
Sorry for the typos…typed on phone.
29
@24, I hear ya, but I can be such a terrible arguer, and sometimes it's best for me to just sit quietly and think of Tillamook Mudslide.

Please wait...
