Get a life, or join your superiors in the Stranger Testing Dept.

A bunch of anonymous teens in highly competitive environments acting rude, hostile, and childish?

I'm shocked

Not that I excuse it... but it's not even a little bit surprising.

>And of course gamer boys are freaking out.

Oh? I missed the memo.

@1 Thanks for validating the existence of this article by the FIRST COMMENT.

HEY GUYS instead of being a bunch of douchebags who pretend they're high and mighty and say things like OH THIS IS NEWS? or what effectively boiled down to "FUCK YOU CUNT" - how about you actually contribute something useful to this world?

I know that's reaaaally hard to do when you're living under a bridge and feasting on the occasional billy goat that crosses, but...

@5: Stick with your response in #4 and go read "Let's Talk about Anita Sarkeesian videos & the gaming media" on Kotaku (I'd put in a link, but workplace filters get in the way).

mark your calendars: first time anyone has ever had good cause to say "well done" about anything involving IGN

If Windows 7 was awful, they might have a few points. However, most Xboxers know that the MAN who left needed to leave because he was single handedly fucking up Xbox and the PR surrounding it.

I dunno how far Mrs Larson-Green can turn that ship around, but she's welcome to try.

When I went to e3, I was shocked at how few females there actually were. I know I have mostly resided in my bubble of friends with a lot of female game players and some designers, and PAX with a lot of female players. But, walking the floor space of e3 reminded me just how few women were in the industry.

And, if the industry isn't welcoming to women, women need to do it for themselves. Sometimes Jezebel just comes out as whining with quotes like "The system is set up to make it basically impossible (outside of indie games, which require a lot more work and are a LOT harder to get into the public eye)" which translates to "BUT IT'S HARRRRDDDD." With the male presence dominating the rest of the gaming industry, women either have to fight the industry or become a great indie dev. But, when I attend Pax 10 panels, it's mainly men up there. I think there was a girl associated with The Bridge. And I think I saw a wife in a locally dev'd zombie game that was kind of OK but not entirely my bag. But, overall, even the indie companies are dominated by men.

This brings us to a problem: Lack of female game designers. I don't think there are legions of female game designers or directors hunting for work. I could be wrong. I wish I was. But, female game devs are this era's female engineers. They're needed, they're rare, and they should be encouraged. And maybe even create a female-driven game company. It's way easier said than done. But, check the progress of Kim Swift. She's amazing and should be held as an example of female brilliance who seems to be doing it her way.

Awesome post, Mary. There's been a long-assumed paradigm of loveable underdogs and sweet-hearted nerds fantastically coming out on top of their jockish oppressors that Hollywood, or bad writing in general, loves to sell us. I'm not a member of any gaming community, but I have worked in the nerdiest bowels of tech, and I can tell you nothing could be further from the truth.

While every clique is guaranteed to have its horrible personalities, the sexism and homophobia that manifests itself in parts of the tech world that I've seen is completely unparallelled, with the possible exception of working in a guitar shop.

@4,5, Nancysballs and dnt trust me have all but admitted they are here only to stir shit up and behave like assholes. They are useless as commenters, and can safely be ignored.

The quality of most comment forums, this one included, would be improved with more aggressive anti-trolling enforcement.

@11 The problem with enforcement is that it can turn into calling anything you disagree with "trolling" and creating an echo chamber of voices you agree with while alienating the people you're trying to reach. Plus, you'd set up a world of castes where only the authors get to troll. Dominic, Goldy and Dan all like to do that from time to time. And, Mudede has made it into an art form.

But, for creating echo chambers, see Dominic. He has decided that anybody who doesn't agree with him is a troll. Or, at least that's how he presents it as why he doesn't engage in anything. Goldy does too, but he engages and trolls harder.

I went to the Aisha Tyler G4 link because she's one of my favorite comediennes, and I don't know if this is a coincident, but the links of videos on the right side kinda dilutes the message for me. Kinda hard to read a post about female empowerment in gaming when there are links to videos with the titles of "International Sexy Ladies Show : Messy Cat Fight" and "Sara Underwood's Naked bike ride". I blame G4.com completely for that.

Please wait...
