Here we have it. Goldie porn.
2
seen worse - but that was when people were shooting at me and vice versa.

Hey, come on, let's equip everyone with 100 round and 200 round drum magazines! What could POSSIBLY go wrong!

And give them to 7 and 8 year olds. Look how that turned out in Africa ...
3
Terrifying.
4
From the original article: "Shocking and SOMEWHAT disturbing dash-cam video" (emphasis mine).

"Somewhat"?
5
I think it was a suicide. He missed those police officers because he chose to.
6
Did I hear the right winger yell "kill me"? And I also thought I heard a bystander offer to help out, saying he had a pistol and then the male cop yelling at him.
7
Thanks for posting this. I was actually watching this video over and over with a friend on Saturday night. I agree with you in that I do not believe this is an isolated act of a lone crazy. Also, I work with mentally ill people, and it's pretty amazing how few clients I have who own guns (the number is actually zero), who believe the government is going to take over (maybe one or two), or who imagine themselves shooting or in some manner killing or maiming government officials or a police officer (zero again). But, every time I visit my family down in Texas, I meet a few people who are not receiving any mental health treatment, and who do all of the above. Yay! Good times!
9
@ 6, I heard "kill me," too.
10
Suicide by cop. He probably wasn't shooting to kill, because he wanted them to shoot him. Why? I don't know. But you don't shoot that many rounds at that range and really not hit anything.
11
@5,6 Yes, he yelled "Kill me" several times. Also, he stopped shooting and didn't start again until cops stopped too, at which point he fired off a couple more to get them to shoot again. It looks like a pretty clear case of suicide by cop. He cut it close though, the way he cracked the windshield.
12
For those who believe this was a suicide by cop, do you think Mr. Gilkerson ran the stop sign on purpose in order to get pulled over? Was it all planned and that's why he had the rifle in the car with him?

Oh, and Mr. Gilkerson didn't miss. The officers were hit. I think they had the good sense to seek cover behind their car doors while Mr. Gilkerson was a damn fool standing up without cover.
13
@2, no one has ever shot at you, dipshit. Nice try. The idea of you in an active war zone is completely hilarious. Count those potatoes again, soldier.

This is exactly how Cascadian Bacon and unfairly.balanced are going to go out. I'll bet they have the same pamphlets.
14
Seems like a major lack of blood for someone having been shot several times at close range.
15
When the right wing finally ratchets up their rhetoric enough so that they actually try something, I'd like to know in advance so we can get some beer and popcorn. That way, we can sit back and watch while the redneck rebellion gets made into chutney by Apache gunships.

Maybe one of them will tweet "Sarah Palin, I've always loved you." just before the first drone strike takes them out.
16
@ 14, Had he been shot in the head, the blood would be visible. Since he seems to be wearing lots of layers of dark clothing, a lot of it was probably being soaked up and otherwise not able to be seen from a dash cam.
17
All those rounds that didn't hit their target, fired by both sides, what happened to them? Hopefully they only did property damage and didn't kill or wound any bystanders.
18
@12 Sure, he could have planned it. It happens. It's an extremely cowardly and irresponsible way to kill yourself, and you probably have to be a paranoid wingnut to choose that way, but it happens.

A biker friend of one of my coworkers got diagnosed with cancer and decided on suicide by cop as his preferred treatment method. He went out driving 100 mph on some country roads until he got pulled over, then he started shooting. That's when his plan broke down. The cops didn't kill him, they just shot him in the shoulder to disable him the way they are trained to do. But he managed to kill one of the cops. Now he's in prison, with cancer. Oops!
19
@ 12, suicide by cop is pretty clear - he was yelling "kill me!" repeatedly. Whether it was planned, or if he just snapped, who knows? Maybe he was on his way to massacre his coworkers, and he ran the stop sign due to an adrenaline rush, and just let loose at the cops instead.
20
@6: He did say 'Kill me' but he didn't say whether he was democrat or a republican, left or right, gay or straight, religious or atheist/agnostic, or any other attribute.
21
no, this isn't how the militia will resist librul tyranny.

first they'll get organized, in secret. they'll start amassing weapons, and then they'll begin a coordinated insurrection. kind of like syria, but with jesus. and the chinese..., no, the russians..., no, the EU, no, the brazilians! will provide a no-fly zone & take out the tanks and command and control. and the police will collaborate because they love amurka, too.
22
I thought he said "You killed me" in a shocked tone. Emphasis on the syllable "kill". Doesn't look like a suicide to me.
24
@20, read the link. His car was full of literature from "Tactical Response", the company that was ranting and raving about "killing people if Obama tries to take away our guns" after the Newtown massacre. The political positioning of this kind of "take up arms to preserve liberty" rhetoric is not difficult to ascertain; it is the position of the NRA and its defenders.

Standard-issue gun nut. He's dead now, but I'm sure his credit card is smoking hot. They got paid, that's the important thing, right?
25
@24: Okay, I stand corrected.
26
It's time for another episode of EVERYONE'S favorite game show
STRANGER TROLLING BINGO!

Today's winning picks are:

Gun nuts!
Thee Olde Seconde Amendmente!
Suicide!
Assault weapons!
Apples and oranges!
You just do not care about X dead Y's!
Tautological tautologies!
Picking cherries!
I don't want to ban all guns but ... !
The NRA!

Beat a straw man for big bonus points!

"Don't Watch this Video of Well Regulated Militia Being Shot to Death by the Police"

And I have explained it to you before but it seems that you refuse to use the correct terminology, this as not a "Well Regulated Militia".
There is some reason that you keep using the terms incorrectly.
That reason is that you are trolling for page hits.

"Because when Second Amendment advocates talk about their right to arm themselves against an oppressive government, this is exactly the sort of scenario their paranoid fantasy imagines."

Maybe your "paranoid fantasy imagines" that.
But, again, the examples that have been provided to you on multiple occasions are Afghanistan and Iraq.

That incident appears to be "suicide by cop".
No, as you claimed, "take up arms against your government."
Again, Afghanistan and Iraq are the examples.
28
Now you know why cops shoot assholes who don't cooperate.
29
@20: the inbred insurrection thinks they are going to fight an army of homogay hipstersexuals led by General Maddow.

They know if they lose, they'll be forced at gunpoint to get gay married.
30
Actually, he didn't shoot the window, the officer returning fire from INSIDE the car did.

When he gets out of the car, he starts shooting at the officer who was also already outside of her car. She retreats behind the car. The shooter doesn't know there's another cop in the car, who starts firing from inside the car through the windshield back out at him.

31
This wasn't suicide by cop. He didn't say "kill me" until he'd been shot and realized he'd lost the gun fight.
32
So the guy is white, so it's a "gun nut" but if he's black it's "police brutality"?
33
What a horrifying example of unnecessary use of force! What flagrant police brutality!

Look, this is so basic: if a person is breaking the law, then you simply arrest that person. How hard is this to understand? What the hell is wrong withthe bloodthirsty police-apologists in this thread?!1? And everyone else: wake up, you're living in a Police State!
34
I'm with the suicide by cop contingent. Either that or he *really* hated the front quarter-panel of that cruiser. :)

@12: Car doors aren't significant cover from AK rounds, especially point-blank like that.
35
@15,

I'll be right there with you enjoying the show. Apparently some gun nuts are promising to march to D.C. with their guns on display as some form of "protest". Hope they all get their behinds thrown into jail.
36
@33: I know, right? Whether the perp is standing in the street, moving way too slowly and flipping you the bird while yelling angry political slogans, standing right next to some punk chucking water bottles and rocks at your riot gear shields, or jumping out of a car you stopped and firing an automatic rifle at you, it's all the same, isn't it?
37
@33: And really, once you've lobbed a few IEDs, unloaded a can of chemical irritant, or fired your gun at the offender, there's no real reason to go to the trouble of putting that low-life in front of a judge, is there? I mean, sometimes you gotta uphold the law, sometimes you defend yourself, and sometimes you just remind 'em who's the boss. Trials are for pussies.
38
@18 Liar. Cops aren't trained to do that.

This wasn't suicide. He was trying to kill these cops.

@34 And they were wounded.
39
Did man run stop sign with scary gun dieded?
41
@34: I'm with the suicide by cop contingent.

No question, the guy picked a fight that would at some point or another result in his death. Also no question that he tried and failed to kill two cops. Apparently, reading a bunch of pamphlets isn't sufficient training for a gunfight.

Car doors aren't significant cover from AK rounds

The doors on your 96 Taurus? No. The armored doors on a cop car? Yes.
42
God, PhilM, you are the only sane person here.

What are the cops thinking, using those non-improvised fireworks that pose a slight risk of powder burn, and also pepper spray, which poses a very low risk of lasting physical harm, when instead they could be using their newly acquired MAGIC SPELL OF ARRESTING to instantly transform the angry and physically confrontational people moving toward them into docile, cooperative people sitting politely in holding cells?
43
@20: Friend of yours?
44
Why is suicide-by-cop somehow incompatible with right-wing-gun-nut NRA kook?

The NRA's anti-government lunacy is fundamentally nihilistic. They don't love America. The don't see a future for our country. They don't consider themselves a part of our country. They don't see a future for themselves. Their whole gig is suicide. They want to stockpile guns and ammo and go out in a blaze of glory. Wayne LaPierre, or 5280 or Cascadian Bacon are close kin to James Gilkerson, and Eric Klebold, Dylan Harris and Adam Lanza and all the rest.

It's all a nihilistic suicide trip. The people who still believe in our country and have hope for the future are the ones who want to bring sanity back to our gun culture.
45
The officers didn't sustain "minor injuries." One of the cops lost the index finger of her left hand: http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf…
46
@38

Liar

Do I know you?
47
He was probably stressed out to the gills having to care for his ailing mother who had a stroke last year. Organizing his funeral can't be much fun for the mom.
48
@43: No, he's not. See @25.
I suggest you read all comments before being snippy.
49
@42: Robotslave, you're totally right! If police officers are bothered by someone's actions or suspecting of law violation but unconvinced of their ability to apprehend that person with ease (sometimes dozens of riot-gear-outfitted SWATshots handcuffing one skinny dude ain't easy, you know) then just beating him or her to submission, lobbing explosives at him and everyone nearby, or dousing everyone in sight with chemical agents, is a sweet-ass alternative. No trials, no paperwork, best of all--no accountability! Who needs rule of law when cops can dish out punishment on the spot? Compliance is key, you know. As Rich O'Neill says, we wouldn't have these problems if people just did what police tell them to do. Christ, what a bunch of self-important assholes the public are!

But let's get back to your equation @33 of A) someone jumping out of a car with an assault rifle then firing away at traffic cops and B) someone speaking his mind in mid-demonstration to police officers who just chucked some teensy little "crowd helper bombs" at loudmouths and innocent bystanders. Tell us more about how there's no more time for rule of law at a rowdy demonstration than there is when someone has cops in his gun's crosshairs.
50
@40, Ken wrote, "Pink Mohawk Guy didn't get sprayed for giving the cops the finger. He got sprayed for repeatedly disregarding orders to move back and then trying to shove past the line of bike cops. The first time he tried to rush the police line they simply shoved him away."

Damned straight he did! That's rith out of the SPD procedures manual: If some cocky little prick won't move when you think he should and ask him to do so, it's on to the chemical weaponry and explosives. If people disregard orders to coordinate with other people and reduce their collective density in the middle of a protest (i.e., to "disburse"), particularly a protest with an anti-cop vibe, there's no time for judges or juries. It is imperative that officers maintain an aura of authority at all times, laws be damned. Arrest and prosecution? Whatever. Mouthing off to cops at a demonstration is pretty much the same thing as coming at them with guns blazing. Can't be too careful, you know.
51
Am I the only one who noticed the white car stop, get caught in the scene and hightail it out of there in reverse?
52
@44 You make a fair point. However, based on my familial experiences with such types (stepmom's parents - she's normal), there's also a strong thread of martyrdom in that mindset. In the case of my family, they simply enjoy the feeling of being persecuted and planning for the inevitable government takeover and resisting where they may - growing their own food, buying Glen Beck's books for the whole family at Christmas, that sort of thing. Because they are old and generally satisfied in their personal lives, they aren't going to go out that way. So there must be something else which pushes the really violent ones to embrace the inherent nihilism of their position.
53
What really got me is the audio. Those officers thought they just had a regular traffic stop and instead they had some nut unload on them. They train for these kinds of things, and yet you could still hear the shock and fear in their voices. Really brings into focus what cops have to constantly watch out for.
54
Good thing the youtube screencap shows us the dead guy off the bat so we don't have to bother watching the actual video.
55
@46: He is correct in that they're not trained to "Lone Ranger" the gun out of peoples' hands. They are trained to kill. They are not trained to "disable". If the person wasn't an imminent threat, they wouldn't be firing in the first fucking place.
56
@49

If anyone involved in the May 1 anti-police demonstration wants a day in court, they can very, very easily obtain it.

As I'm sure you're well aware, there have been lots of suits brought against the SPD, and won, by people who felt the police wrongfully used force against them.

Your wonderful peaceful pepper-sprayed and firework-startled cop-antagonizing friends are all completely entitled to file suit against the SPD, if they so choose.

They can have their day in court, if they want it.

But is that what they want?

Or is that just what you want?
57
@56: I want rule of law. I want police to do their jobs ethically and within the boundaries of the law. I want police not to use explosives and chemical weapons to gain compliance with an order to move in a particular direction. I want police not to assault a group of people because of what someone in that group did.

I do not want someone prosecuted for failing to do something it is impossible for him to do without the cooperation of other people---to disperse. I do not want someone prosecuted for resisting arrest without prosecution for whatever he was being arrested for.

I want you, Robotslave, to continue to make your case that in both an incident like the one described here (someone jumps out of car at traffic stop with a rifle and immediately begins firing directly at patrol officers) and also in the incident described over there (someone at political demonstration walks toward riot-gear-clad police, one or more of whom has asked someone in the crowed near the man to move the other way, man expresses himself with coarse language and rude gesture) the preferred action on the part of police is not intervention, arrest, and prosecution, but to attack the person. Tell us clearly how it's useless to put that person before a jury of his peers to be held accountable for his actions, and preferable for a cop to simply beat him until he complies to the cop's satisfaction.

I want everyone to consider whether an act not deemed worthy of arrest and prosecution (a process which might have involved the difficulty of several officers holding a suspect in place while they handcuff him), should result in a police officer firing explosive devices or discharging a canister of chemical pain-inducer at multiple people nearby. I want us to consider just which acts are so serious that they will result in assault at the hands of police officers, but will not result in due process.
58
Phil M, Phil M, since you never answered my last post on the Saturday Morning News thread, I'll take it to mean that you don't know how to answer it, and the probably cause being that you've never really thought about the subject that deep before.
59
@57: " I want rule of law."

Be careful what you wish for. "Rule of law" is not something to fetishize.
60
@59: Agreed. Nonetheless, it's the best we have for now, and it's better than letting cops beat people into submission at their discretion.
61
@10, et al:
But you don't shoot that many rounds at that range and really not hit anything.
Anyone who thinks this is true has never been to a gun range when the dipshits show up with their AKs (or any other gun that can squirt a week's worth of their wages downrange in 5 minutes).
62
Thanks @53. Enough with all the armchair psychiatrists and video-game experts here. Two small-town police officers suddenly faced with this, out of nowhere? My sympathy is entirely with them. This video constitutes a horribly cogent argument for police departments being in the lead on the effort to get proper gun control.
63
It's only a matter of time before these people start using suicide bombers.
64
@60: I understand keeping LEOs at bay, but that phrase carries with it very specific negative connotations.
65
@64: In my mind, rule of law is simply the alternative to rule of man.
66
I agree with the person who said that “suicide by cop” and “going nuts” are not mutually exclusive. Even if he took aim and hit them, that doesn’t mean he wasn’t motivated by some sort of “out in a blaze of glory” suicidal urge. If you’re a truly socially responsible suicide-by-cop enthusiast, you shoot at the police with blanks.

People in the heat of a firefight can be unbelievably inaccurate. That number 37 for the number of rounds rings a bell. I seem to remember a shootout a few years ago between two SPD officers when each one thought the other was a suspect who had stolen a police car. They exchanged somewhere around 37-38 rounds without hitting each other or anyone bystanders.
67
Good riddance to another right-wing, paranoid redneck. Let's hope the rest of them follow this idiot into oblivion...
68
@66: People in that state of mind aren't thinking clearly by definition. They did the "best" they could to avoid killing someone, but with just enough menace to ensure they died.

@67: We'd be better off without Glenn Beck for sure but I can't find any good in these situations. I'm glad anyone didn't receive major injuries, but I'd still rather he found some care and hope in the world LONG before this point, as sick as the guy was.
69
Nobody won here. It's awful that this clearly disturbed man did not get help before it came to this, it's awful that cops following routine procedure should end up in a gun fight with a lunatic, it's awful the man had a 40-round magazine to unload. Better gun control and mental health care reform should not be partisan issues, just common fucking sense.
70
I love seeing that liberals show the same blood lust that used to be the sole province of warmongering conservatives.

It reminds me of how my friends in college cheered when Janet Reno ordered the ATF to go in and teach those right wingers a lesson in Waco. We burned down the compound 'to save the children' not because we got tired of waiting, of looking bad. Who knew CS gas turned into cyanide? Who would expected a crazy cult leader would lead everyone in there to their death?

Charming.

Progressive no less.

Please wait...
