Thanks for posting this. I was actually watching this video over and over with a friend on Saturday night. I agree with you in that I do not believe this is an isolated act of a lone crazy. Also, I work with mentally ill people, and it's pretty amazing how few clients I have who own guns (the number is actually zero), who believe the government is going to take over (maybe one or two), or who imagine themselves shooting or in some manner killing or maiming government officials or a police officer (zero again). But, every time I visit my family down in Texas, I meet a few people who are not receiving any mental health treatment, and who do all of the above. Yay! Good times!

It looks like a pretty clear case of suicide by cop. He cut it close though, the way he cracked the windshield.

A biker friend of one of my coworkers got diagnosed with cancer and decided on suicide by cop as his preferred treatment method. He went out driving 100 mph on some country roads until he got pulled over, then he started shooting. That's when his plan broke down. The cops didn't kill him, they just shot him in the shoulder to disable him the way they are trained to do. But he managed to kill one of the cops. Now he's in prison, with cancer. Oops!

That's rith out of the SPD procedures manual: If some cocky little prick won't move when you think he should and ask him to do so, it's on to the chemical weaponry and explosives. If people disregard orders to coordinate with other people and reduce their collective density in the middle of a protest (i.e., to "disburse"), particularly a protest with an anti-cop vibe, there's no time for judges or juries. It is imperative that officers maintain an aura of authority at all times, laws be damned. Arrest and prosecution? Whatever. @44 You make a fair point. However, based on my familial experiences with such types (stepmom's parents - she's normal), there's also a strong thread of martyrdom in that mindset. In the case of my family, they simply enjoy the feeling of being persecuted and planning for the inevitable government takeover and resisting where they may - growing their own food, buying Glen Beck's books for the whole family at Christmas, that sort of thing. Because they are old and generally satisfied in their personal lives, they aren't going to go out that way. So there must be something else which pushes the really violent ones to embrace the inherent nihilism of their position.

What really got me is the audio. Those officers thought they just had a regular traffic stop and instead they had some nut unload on them. They train for these kinds of things, and yet you could still hear the shock and fear in their voices. Really brings into focus what cops have to constantly watch out for.

Good thing the youtube screencap shows us the dead guy off the bat so we don't have to bother watching the actual video.

I want police not to use explosives and chemical weapons to gain compliance with an order to move in a particular direction. I want police not to assault a group of people because of what someone in that group did.

I do not want someone prosecuted for failing to do something it is impossible for him to do without the cooperation of other people---to disperse. I do not want someone prosecuted for resisting arrest without prosecution for whatever he was being arrested for.

I want you, Robotslave, to continue to make your case that in both an incident like the one described here (someone jumps out of car at traffic stop with a rifle and immediately begins firing directly at patrol officers) and also in the incident described over there (someone at political demonstration walks toward riot-gear-clad police, one or more of whom has asked someone in the crowed near the man to move the other way, man expresses himself with coarse language and rude gesture) the preferred action on the part of police is not intervention, arrest, and prosecution, but to attack the person. Tell us clearly how it's useless to put that person before a jury of his peers to be held accountable for his actions, and preferable for a cop to simply beat him until he complies to the cop's satisfaction.

I want everyone to consider whether an act not deemed worthy of arrest and prosecution (a process which might have involved the difficulty of several officers holding a suspect in place while they handcuff him), should result in a police officer firing explosive devices or discharging a canister of chemical pain-inducer at multiple people nearby. I want us to consider just which acts are so serious that they will result in assault at the hands of police officers, but will not result in due process.
