Meh. I get why everyone is excited about biofuels (certainly in my field anyway) but people have been working on this for more than a decade and maybe I am a pessimist, but making the amount of fuel this world needs seems less than likely. Also, the sheer amount of raw material it would take to grow those bacteria (glucose, or even cellulose for specially engineered bugs etc) would require just about all the world's agriculture to be devoted to it.

Even if you produce it in a "carbon neutral" way...you still have to burn it the same smelly old way, as I found out yesterday sitting behind a high rise blue pickup truck waiting to turn into Fred Meyer which left a solid black soot cloud with every press of the accelerator.

That asshole is running a tune on his engine to produce soot on purpose. No Diesel engine made for a passenger car in the last 5 years should ever produce emissions like that unless its failing.

Biofuels really can't solve the pollution problem that is literally choking China to death, and which will accelerate even faster, based on car and SUV demand there.

But come to the UW Engineering Days, these are great!

Please wait...
