Domestic assholes or foreign assholes, in otherwards. If the former, look for waves of vitriol as right wing nutjobs try to argue that they haven't been fanning the flames for five years (and I'm looking at you, Governor Rick "Sucession" Perry.) If the latter, some new nation will receive a 5-10 year visit from our military, "free of charge" ( but paid for by you and me.) Bah fucking humbug.
2
Don't you mean supporting the first theory? Or is Inspire a publication ment for radical Muslems?
3
It's not entirely impossible that both theories could be correct. A lot of fringe terrorist groups have and have had strange alliances.
4
There are problems with both theories.

If it was domestic extremists, why did they not more directly target a symbol of the government, as opposed to its citizens?

If it was an Islamist group, why are they not claiming credit for what (from their perspective) was a resounding success?

It's also possible that it may have been the work of a lone lunatic with an agenda, like the one who called firefighters to lure them into an ambush. Given that no evidence has been made public yet, I think it's unwise to speculate.
5
Seems too random for right-wing political nuts. They usually target an obvious "symbol," like a federal building or an abortion clinic.

A miscellaneous crowd of runners does not really fit the bill. Seems more like a homegrown muslim terrorist, with the multiple homemade bombs, and the indiscriminate targeting of a crowd of people.

Right and left wing political terrorism is about tearing down a particular segment of society, whereas the islamofacist bombings tend to be more about just killing as many people as possible so that they do not feel safe anywhere.
6
Maybe it's some Ted Kaczynski weirdo. So many possibilities.
7
Eric Rudolf.
8
It's really pretty stupid to speculate about this at this point in time. That won't stop anybody from doing it, of course, because there are a lot of stupid people in the world. But let's wait until there's at least a tiny bit of real information before getting all worked up in a lather, shall we?
9
Supporting the right-winger hypothesis: The last mile of the marathon was dedicated to the Newtown families, and there were a bunch of Newtown families in the stands right near the finish line.

(Because horrifically blowing up the families of the Newtown victims would TOTALLY make people stop supporting gun reform. I don't pretend to find it a compelling argument, but I can see how a gun nut would.)
10
What's interesting is that no one has claimed responsibility yet. Organized groups intending to "send a message" are up front about who they are & why they did it.

2, RTFA
12
Perhaps if you slaughter enough civilians all over the world at some time there will be blowback and there will be dead women and children on your own streets.

Weird....
13
Remember the bomb left at MLK parade in Tacoma? It seems a more personal attack. I think it's domestic.
14
It is possible that one or more groups have claimed responsibility, and that the authorities are holding that info back while trying to sort out what is credible.

But just as likely, we could be looking at another Rudolph type of a situation.
15
The Boston Marathon is a symbol--one that is more publicly accessible than something like the Superbowl, by the way--in a liberal city in a liberal marriage equality state.
16
Could be anyone, silly to speculate at this point.

I'm enjoying the media reaction, especially Tom Brokaw lamenting the loss of innocence of his grandchildren, as if domestic bombings in America are something new.

If you look at our history, this type of attack is fairly common.

Durp durp durp.
17
@13 - That was in Spokane, not Tacoma.
18
@17 Thank you.
19
@ 8, your boys at infowars are already asking if it was a "false flag" attack. So, do you think you'll ever cite them again to support your point, or will this be egregious enough and get you to forswear them?
20
Backpacks = anarchists? Time to start questioning anarchists moms to see what they packed in their kids' lunch boxes yesterday.
21
Glenn Greenwald, usually a bit of a chore to read because he KNOWS BETTER THAN YOU AT ALL TIMES, is spot fucking on about our response to the bombings so far: here from the Guardian, what I think is pretty much a masterpiece. Especially his closing. I could be wrong, I'm a bit emotional...
At the Atlantic, security expert Bruce Schneier has a short but compelling article on how urgent it is that we not react to this Boston attack irrationally or with exaggerated fear, and that we particularly remain vigilant against government attempts to exploit fear to impose all new rights-reducing measures. He notes in particular how the more unusual an event is (such as this sort of attack on US soil), the more our brains naturally exaggerate its significance and frequency (John Cole makes a similar point).

In sum, even if the perpetrators of Monday's attack in Boston turn out to be politically motivated and subscribers to an anti-US ideology, it will still be a very rare event, one that poses far less danger to Americans than literally countless other threats. The most important lesson of the excesses arising from the 9/11 attacks should be this one: that the dangers of overreacting and succumbing to irrational fear are far, far greater than any other dangers posed by these type of events.

22
Fat people did it!
23
Matt, don't be a dumbass. I never said they were "my boys," or that they were particularly sane. They're not.

They do, however, run the stories that CNN, MSNBC, and the other nutso liberal media outlets refuse to run. And smirk if you want, but there are plenty of them.
24
Can I use this thread to apologize to the Slogosphere? Yesterday, I repeated the words of Massachusetts General Hospital head of Emergency Department, Alasdair Conn, saying that the ER had seen no evidence of pellets, nails, or anything like that. Today, George Velmahos, trauma chief of that same hospital is saying quite the opposite in a press conference.
25
Homegrown Moslems. Probably well versed in the culture of victimhood, aka "social justice", taught in urban American public schools.
27
CNN is nutso? Again - around the bend you are. And why is it now crazy to speculate as to who, why? Of course that is what we want to know at this point. Thats what we do here. Or are you concerned the speculation will turn towards those fomenting fear about the gov't who is coming to take our guns away? The Greenwald piece is spot on, btw. Thanks 21.
28
"Both are ultra-conservative. Both are fundmentalists. Both hate America and its people."

Just like communists, socialists and anarchists then.

If you hate Moslem extremists then, why does the left always try to blame America for their terrorism?
29
@8...and here I thought the fuck was having a rational moment...then @23...

So much for Mr. Rationality.

30
...or, a classified domestic federal program to soften opposition to anti-terrorism laws that might be in conflict with the Constitution. Since were wildly speculating and all.
32
Clearly, you guys haven't been paying much attention to how CNN has been beating the war drums against guns lately. They've been almost as crazy as Slog.
33
Thanks #21. I was resisting the urge to post basically that same idea, as I did not want it to seem I was minimizing the tragedy so soon after, but it is so true that while these kinds of events stick out in our minds, the actual danger of them is extremely low. They are so rare, and way more people are killed by cows and vending machines every year than such events. But it is the randomness which is so terrifying, and why terrorism can be so effective.

I do not mean to say we should not mourn and explore what led up to this tragedy, but it is also of prime importance that we do not let irrational fears dictate our path. It sounds trite, and it is, but if we let such rare events change our national identity, the terrorists win.
34
"@28, why do you hate muslim extremists when you're practically in bed together"

The Mohammedans believe in small government, individual liberty and free enterprise? That's news to me. All the countries they run are marked by government intrusion into life, business and property as well as government control of huge sections of the economy and total disregard for private property rights.
35
@33, word.
37
@36 You must be fighting your imaginary straw man again then.
38
Back in the 60's and 70's, we had a lot of low grade terrorist stuff in this country (Hijackings, bombings, kidnappings, etc.) Not only because of the civil rights movement, but in response to the war, and a handful of other issues.

In those days, the bombings tended to be targeted towards infrastructure - the George Jackson brigade here in the NW bombed Safeways and Utility stuff, and almost every university had at least one bombing or arson.

We didn't lose our heads over it. But those groups didn't normally target civilians, either - outside of some of the stuff white racists did in the south.
39
@34: Actually, in Globalized Islam: The Search for a New Ummah, Olivier Roy states that the Taliban's economic policies were borderline libertarian. Armed Forces Journal agrees:

http://www.armedforcesjournal.com/2009/1…

"The Taliban’s positive political program has at least five aspects: Justice, micropolitics, reconciliation, laissez-faire and democracy...the Taliban’s political program is also furthered by their “do no harm” approach to the central drivers of local politics and economies."

This is hella off topic though.
40
@ 23/32, which is precisely why CNN can't be considered "liberal," or demonstrated to be "ignoring stories" that FUDrakers dream up.

Call me a dumbass all you want - you're the one who cited infowars. You'll never see me citing some far out partisan news source for anything. Not even Mother Jones, whose work is Pulitzer worthy.
41
If it was a domestic group, I think it has more markings of a left wing anarchist group (they tend to indiscriminately target private individuals) than a right wing antigovernment group (they tend to target government symbols), but I'm still inclined to believe it was an Islamo-terrorist job. However, because that would be "inconvenient" to the administration (which claims to have "decapitated" Al-Qaeda and etc., etc.), I suspect that it will eventually get hung around the neck of a patsy (preferably of the right-wing-pro-life-pro-gun “nut job” flavor) or just remain "unsolved" (like Benghazi) so that Obama doesn’t have to “react” to it (or admit that Islamo-terrorist organizations are thriving under his watch).

This just smells too much like another attempt at what the failed 2010 Times Square bombing was intended to do: “to kill Americans.”
42
@41 or the mohammedan in Portland targeting a Christmas tree lighting event. Of course, the left conveniently ignores that one, homegrown, Moslem with entrenched sense of victimhood.
43
@41 As long as fucking anarchist "libertarians" like yourself are openly passing around bomb plans and full-auto conversion kit plans for your AR-15s on the internet in the name of "resisting government oppression," it could have been anyfuckingbody who did it.

This is what defying government looks like. Suck it.
45
Just like communists, socialists and anarchists then.
Socialists and anarchists do not necessarily support extremist methods as a matter of policy, but any ideology--even the most seemingly moderate--can harbor those who will act extremely.

I think that, for most of us, the fundamentalist differs from the groups you mention above because he would legally regulate our moral decisions in the name of deity or deities whose existence can merely be posited, empirical evidence of any kind being conspicuously absent.

That said, someone plants a bomb, I don't care if he worships YHWH, Allah, the almighty dollar, the right to self-governance, or unpasteurized cheeses.
If you hate Moslem extremists then, why does the left always try to blame America for their terrorism?
I reserve my "hate," so much as I indulge it at all, for actions; I hate no one for the group(s) to which he happens to belong or even for the contents of his head (though I may grow to hate him more the more I'm forced to endure the contents of his head). But no atrocious acts happen in a vacuum. It's not a matter of blame, but of analyzing chains of causation and accepting some piece of the responsibility.

That's what grown-ups do. Only children find satisfaction in pointing a finger and shouting, "His fault!"
46
I think the highest probability is domestic anti-tax extremists.

And it's personal with me, so I don't care what their "argument" is anymore.
47
@ 44, to be fair, I do believe some of the 60s/70s radicals killed a couple of people. That's why the FUDrakers tried so hard to tie that one guy (name already forgotten) to Obama.

That said, no, nobody in America has died as a result of extreme leftwing violence since then.
48
@44- As I said (and you confirm), the right wing militants tend to target symbols.

Convince me that the Boston Marathon is a symbol that they would be likely to attack...
49
Way too early to tell who's responsible.

My guess is it's someone like Eric Rudolph. Rudolph's bombs were designed specifically to injure and kill lots of random people, scare people, and make the government look inept.

Rudolph is an extremist "christian" shit head. Anti socialist, anti abortion, anti gay bigot.

I would not be at all surprised if this bomber is just like him.
50
Extremism in defense of what you perceive to be liberty is a vice.

When it includes blowing up innocent people.

From the AP: "The two bombs that ripped through the crowds at the Boston Marathon, killing three people and wounding more than 170, were fashioned out of pressure cookers and packed with shards of metal, nails and ball bearings, a person briefed on the investigation said Tuesday."
53
@4 and 5,

Huh? What about Eric Rudolph? Or that right-wing asshole who attacked a *daycare* center several years ago? You're giving domestic terrorists way too much credit.

@4,

The thing about domestic terrorism is that it's almost always committed by "lone wolves". Right-wing extremist groups are extremely careful to encourage violence and to give individuals the tools to commit terrorism, but not to organize it themselves, because that would be illegal.
54
@47
You’re thinking of Bill Ayers. In 1969 he co-founded the Weather Underground, a self-described communist revolutionary group that conducted a campaign of bombing public buildings (including police stations, the U.S. Capitol Building, and the Pentagon) during the 1960s and 1970s.

Ayers and Obama know each other as a result of meetings/ working with one another and living in the same neighborhood since the mid 1990s. Obama launched his Illinois Senate campaign from a fund raiser-at Ayers home.

But, of course, there’s nothing unusual, or questionable, about a President who launched his career from the living room of the unrepentant founder of a communist revolutionary group that conducted a campaign of bombing public buildings. Right?
55
My best guess is an Eric Rudolph type figure. We'll have to wait and see.
56
Regardless of who perpetrated this attack this sums up my feelings:
"fuck you islamists and fuck you right wing conspiracy theory nutjobs. you are all ignorant assholes"
57
@ 54, let me fix your last sentence.

"But, of course, there’s nothing factual in claiming that a President launched his career from the living room of the unrepentant founder of a communist revolutionary group that conducted a campaign of bombing public buildings. Right?"

Hell, we've had TWO presidents (Nixon and Reagan) whose springboard to the White House was the Red Scare, the second greatest denial of Constitutional Rights in American history, after Jim Crow. Talk about guys with actual blood on their hands.
58
@ 52, so even then nobody died? I stand corrected.

YGBKM, take note. You side with murderers. According to your logic, anyway.
59
As for left-wing violence? Let's see. 985,000 babies slaughtered. Each year.
60
Seems like the appropriate thing to do is to organize an actual betting pool. Points awarded for correctly identifying the sex, number, racial background, religion, citizenship, and political affiliation of the perpetrators.
61
@60 I'm in:

My guess, based on plenty of research:
It was one grade-A selfish asshole.

In fact, it might have been two assholes but I don't want to overbid.

62
"As for left-wing violence? "

Every urban gang killing in the USA since that's pretty much 99% Democrat turf engaged in 'wealth redistribution'.
63
They used pressure cookers. If they have traces of goat, it's the Mohammedans.
64
So, for those not from Boston, 4/15 is Patriot Day, and also when anti-tax extremists get bent out of shape. People not worshipping their anti-tax religion by running in a positive Boston Marathon, at the VIP location used for families of the survivors of the child-slaughtering massacre, make a big symbol for the extremists who hate America who are against paying taxes for their subsidized lifestyles.
65
“BOSTON (AP) -- The bombs that ripped through the crowd at the Boston Marathon, killing three people and wounding more than 170, were fashioned out of pressure cookers and packed with metal shards, nails and ball bearings to inflict maximum carnage, a person briefed on the investigation said Tuesday.

Similar pressure-cooker explosives have been used in Afghanistan, India, Nepal and Pakistan, according to a July 2010 intelligence report by the FBI and Homeland Security. Also, one of the three devices used in the May 2010 Times Square attempted bombing was a pressure cooker, the report said.”
66
@ 65, silence on my point will be taken as your tacit admission that I'm right, and be referred to in the future. (E.g., "Hey YGBKM, remember when you essentially admitted that right wingers are murderous and lefties aren't?")
67
@66 Pol Pot, Stalin, Mao, Kim il Sung all agree with you.
68
@66 - When has YGBKM said or "admitted" anything that doesn't segue into a right wing talking point? Everything he says is with the goal of:
1) Evangelizing talking points
2) Spreading FUD
3) Causing doubt and confusion
4) Defaming the President
5) Hating America
69
@66
Where in the hell did I "side" with anyone??? I have simply speculated that this was most likely the work of an Islamic extremist, followed, in my opinion, at a very distant, and unlikely, second place by a Leftist Anarchist.

Whoever did it should be strung up from a lamp-post with piano wire, and certainly does not speak for any movement I would "side" with.

I'm just kind of amazed at the Left's apparent delight in contemplating the possibility of it being an domestic agent, instead of a foreign enemy... Seems like if anyone has sided with anyone it is the Left with foreign radicals.

I guess that "hoping" it was a foreign agent instead of an American makes me a xenophobic racist in your eyes. Your apparent "hope" that it was an American makes you a traitor in my eyes.

Funny thing is, though, that I suspect we both believe this was done by a religious extremest and that we are both horrified by it.

70
The fact that no one has claimed responsibility suggests to me that it might just be a random psychopath.
71
69: If you're speculating based on a group's history of violent tactics, American leftists shouldn't be second on your list. Most terrorist acts on American soil, going by quantity, have been committed by foreign terrorists, right-wing domestic terrorists, and lone wolves with incoherent beliefs that fall into neither category.

While the left has certainly committed violence, it hasn't committed nearly enough (especially in recent years) to justify you suspecting them above all other non-Islamist possibilities. This incident certainly could have been left-wing terrorists, but only in the same sense that it could be anybody for all we know right now. What you've created isn't a list of suspects so much as a list of "people you hope it was."

As for me, I'll be waiting for actual information with all the other non-dipshits before I declare any theories. Until then, it could feasibly be the work of anyone from the Weather Underground to the Birch Society to what remains of Al Qaeda.
72
Who would use a pressure cooker to kill? That's just assholeish.

I have two pressure cookers: both electric, one Harvest Gold, one Avocado. They're great for a quick pot roast or chicken, maybe a quick stew, or pleasing soup. But THAT is IT.

Seriously. How barbaric.
73
@ 69, your belief that Ayers and Obama are buds opens you to association with the worst of the right. So, basically, it was @ 54 where you sided with them.

If you walk that back, I'll walk my assertion back, too. If you won't, I won't. You are going to be held to the standard which you hold others.
74
Anybody "hoping" that the terrorist belongs to a specific identity or racial group is a giant pile of shit.

The only thing you should hope for is that the victims recover, find justice, and the person or persons responsible are caught and prosecuted no matter who they are.

Please wait...
