We already know evangelicals will vote for a Mormon. Their standards aren't so fucking high as they try to make us believe. And we already know they'd support someone who would destroy the economy and sink us to all time lows in the opinion of the world. Maybe they should just get the fuck out of politics altogether and do everyone a favor. Huckabee included.
@1 - Yup, precisely. In the primaries, evangelicals were screeching that Romney needed to be blocked because Mormons were satanic. After he got the nomination, they went back to claiming that Christian, church-going Obama was the Antichrist.
Bob Casey of PA, who is a Democrat but a devout Catholic, also endorsed it yesterday. He was for civil unions before, but he came out for full marriage equality yesterday.
the change in opinion on gay rights/equality is amazing. other causes should take a lesson:
-if you hide yourself and don't come forward, don't expect middle america to get you or feel from you. Yes, I am talking to you, pot smokers.
-shifting from "you are violating my minority rights" to "we too recognize and value common norms like you the majority particularly the value of [fill in the blank: marriage/family/lberty/freedom/opportunity/responsibility] is key.
--result: you now defined opponents as The Other/Villains and us and the soon to be majority as the Heros upholding American values and norms, woo hoo.
These little morality tales work far better than logic and reason. Gun control folks also should take heed.
,,According to a current study, since 2007 Republican lawmakers have tried to torpedo more than 70 percent of all bills before they were even put to a vote. This applied to only 27 percent of proposed legislation in the 1980s, and only 8 percent in the 1960s. "This level of obstruction is extremely unusual," Norman Ornstein, a congressional scholar with the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank, told Newsweek. "And the core of the problem is the GOP." '' (der Spiegel)
I'm convinced that the Hukster shits himself for no reason at all. Churchy con-artist types tend to have a lot of dirty habits. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
GOP has been stupid on this issue from the beginning. Should have pushed 'civil marriage' fairness and could have still emphasized how it has nothing to do with 'real marriage under god'.
Marriage is a conservative issue, of course the GOP is caving on same sex marriage, they are hearing from young people that its a new demographic that they can win to their side. Better to assimilate the LGBT conservative community than keep turning away new talent (and money) when they sorely need it.
I'm happy about it. Also annoyed. Could it be any more obvious the anti-homos are beginning to do this solely because they lost the gay vote last fall, and fear for the future of their party with the under 30 crowd? Portman's kid came out to him 2 years ago. Yet he didn't care about gay marriage starting two years ago? 18 months ago? A year? It was only immediately *after* his party had it's ass handed to them?
Again, happy they are feeling the pressure and publicly beginning to side with us. But they fucking disgust me otherwise.
Hear, hear!
And religion can butt out too, imho.
Nope, no homophobes there, Huckster says so!
We're winning.

By linking them together it's a no win.
