I got that too. The only thing I use it for is local news. And the comments on local news. Which is mostly right wingers on long term disability commenting on there anyway, so no major loss. Which means I'll just switch to KOMO or PI. I sure don't read the Times for its excellent commentary (ha-ha). When was the last hard news it broke or added in depth coverage to? The Lakewood police shooting. That was good journalism, but haven't seen anything much since then. They've probably laid off most of those reporters anyway.
2
I use the Times for sports mostly, and a few times for news.
3
It's good for mulch, though.

Signs of the Times: Remember when people used the Times to paper-train their puppies? Nowadays, you can walk into Bartells and walk out with a pack of "training pads" for the same purpose. (For those who no longer walk out anywhere, Amazon delivers.)

Companies need revenue streams in order to survive, especially newspapers.
6
@5 - Companies need decent products in order to justify revenue streams.
7
There's an app written by a British teen for that, @6.
8
@6: And they can't create decent products (content) if they can't afford to keep the talent that produces good content.
9
What do you want to bet it will be as easily subverted as the NYT's, which can be beat simply by using the stop button?

@9 The NYT paywall was made intentionally porous. It was intended to give people who want to support the newspaper the opportunity to do so, but still not turn away the cheapskates (and let them think they are real smart). The Times has come out and said as much. It will also become increasingly difficult to get around their paywall in the future.
11
@9 The idea is to encourage people to buy a subscription, not to build some impermeable wall. The people who will try the various hoops to get around it probably are too cheap to subscribe anyway.

I always find it fascinating then newspaper sites include their editorial pages in the firewall. It's that cutting off your nose to spite your face?
13
The newspaper industry: Our product will get crappier, more expensive, and more of a pain to use until revenues increase.

Good luck with that.
14
@Phoebe: Advertising. That's the revenue stream that keeps newspapers alive. Advertising. The paid subscriptions barely keep the lights on in the 3rd floor shitter.

And there you go... At 4:21 I had no issues. At 4:22, I got this:

Private browsing in Firefox lets you get around the paywall by starting a new free trial every time you refresh.

Please wait...
