Hey you loser amateur, you'd be lost without the Seattle Times. Jackoff.
2
i'm probably alone in my definition of journalism, but for me the test of a "journalist" is one who reports on an event which supports a view opposite of their own personal view and yet allows the report to fairly present that opposite view. in recent times that tendency has suffered to near extinction.

Once upon a time "amateur" meant 'one who was motivated by passion for the subject', and was a person more highly regarded than a "professional", which meant 'mercenary'.

Because amateurs were pursuing knowledge for the sake of knowing --amateur scientists, for example-- this was considered a more pure and honest pursuit, and they were perceived as better than those who did it merely 'for the money'.
4
Professionalism can be defined by credentialing, but in it's absence is defined by whether or not someone is paid.

Given that many citizen journalists have ads that help pay for their costs calling them amateurs doesn't really tell the whole story.

They're just defensive because Melissa Westbrook is constantly kicking their ass in covering the Seattle Public Schools!

So, if not "citizens?" What then—tourists from foreign lands? Immigrants with visas? Illegal immigrants?

Bad word choice on Jim's part, I agree.

I don't care what the haters say, Goldy: I heart you, & I appreciate your posts—they're always well written & seem to come from an honest concern about what's right or (wrong) 'round here, in my opinion. So: Thank you. :)

“Long ago in the days before journalists became celebrities, their enterprise was reviled and poorly paid, and it was understood by working newspapermen that the presence of more than two people at their funeral could be taken as a sign that they had disgraced the profession.” Lewis Lapham

" I dream of a day when journalists are judged not by the size of their paycheck but by the character of their content."

You would still be a talentless hack and a partisan shrill.

"I do not remember an instance of an honest man atop Novosti (the former USSR's KGB media). What I do remember is the fact commonly known in Moscow, that Novosti perhaps holds first place in the number of mentally ill, alcoholics, sadists, masochists, schizoids, graphomaniacs, etc., and is something of an asylum for all sorts of mental cases never reported to the Serbski Institute -- that is, as long as they continue to pretend to be loyal to the Power. And these are the cadres who 'decide all' in the business of ideological warfare against the rest of the world."

~Yuri Bezmenov, former KGB propagandist, and defector to US
