I'm all for regularization of pot as an item of commerce, but some specific electrical and fire-safety code upgrades would be nice to have in place, in advance, before grow-rooms become as popular as knotty-pine rec rooms were in the 1960s.

Now that it's legal, why would you go to all the trouble and expense to set up a grow room in your basement, rather than just grow it in your back yard or a farm field?

@1 The risk of electrical fire comes mostly from overloaded circuits & sloppy wiring. That kind of thing is easy for a contractor to avoid. That foam insulation from our friends at InsulFoam isn't going to catch fire just from the hot lights.

@2 You clearly know nothing about marijuana or why people have greenhouses. Outdoor weed is hemp, not sticky icky.

@2: Because backyard gardens can't control variables that result in the high-quality weed local consumers expect - things like lighting levels, watering, nutrients, humidity, temperature, and the schedule at which they're administered/change. Plus, things like basic security and pest control as well. Sure, you could just put a seed in the ground and probably smoke what grows up out of it, but it won't be anywhere near what you'd get in a dispensary or even a small home grow room like this.

Okay. For the sake of argument, I'll concede that you can probably grow better quality weed in a controlled environment. But for next to nothing, I can grow a pot plant in my back yard, even if it is somewhat inferior. It would cost thousands of dollars to purchase and install the pictured grow room, plus the ongoing electric bill from the grow lights.

Even the somewhat inferior pot I can grow almost for free in my back yard is still going to be 100x more potent than the weed I used to smoke in the 1970s.

I'll pass on the grow room. But I'm glad it makes others happy.

Reverse Polarity, it is still illegal to grow it, and it will also continue to be illegal to grow it after the WSLCB releases the rules for 'how to legally grow it' in December.

Unless you are one of the lucky ones that attain ownership of what will very likely be a very expensive license from the State.

So no, you cannot now grow it in a pot in your backyard, nor can you grow it in a pre-fab grow room in your knotty-pine rec room (hah!). However, nobody needs to know about your hidden indoor grow-room in your knotty-pine rec room. But it's quite likely that, unless you live on a remote plot of land up in Darrington, some one of your neighbors or one of their nosy children will spot the one lone plant growing in that pot in your backyard.

It is not illegal to own a grow-room and it is far less likely that any pot you are growing in a hidden grow room will be discovered than if it were in a pot outside in your yard.

Pupuguru, yes, you are correct that medical patients are allowed to grow at home. So nothing would stop them from also legally owning a personal grow-room.

@13 - weeeelllllll, yes and no. Federally it's likely drug paraphernalia - http://codes.lp.findlaw.com/uscode/21/13… - so it's illegal to offer them for sale or transport them interstate.

Under state law it's still technically drug paraphernalia as well and again illegal to offer for sale, likely even for medical patients. I-502 didn't change the state paraphernalia laws AFAIK. De facto legal but de jure illegal to sell, basically.
