I just watched all five series of Six Feet Under for the first time and then I watched the episodes again with commentary. The main storylines ended with the show in 2005 but (SPOILER ALERT) in the finale, in a flash-forward, the series’ gay couple gets married in a beautiful outdoor wedding. Their adopted sons are ring bearers and the entire family is shown sitting on folding chairs in the field, beaming with joy. Writer/Director/creator, Alan Ball, did the commentary for this final episode. He said he set the scene specifically in 2009 as he felt sure that Californians would have legal same-sex marriage by then. Sigh. But, soon!

It is inevitable. It is your destiny.

Will it become legal nationally some day? Absolutely. Will it become legal nationally in the next few years? Absolutely not. Even the next 10 years seems doubtful.

DOMA will be overturned, hopefully very soon. This will lead to federal recognition of marriage rights. However that won't make it "legal nationally", it just throws it to the states and makes the federal government officially neutral. Alabama isn't getting gay marriage anytime soon. We're going to have to wait a long time for the next Loving vs. Virginia. For that the court will need a broad national consensus that this particular type of marriage is acceptable and bans on it are immoral and unconstitutional, which will allow it to force the (southern, as always) states to join modernity against their will. Could that happen within 10 years? Maybe, but I wouldn't call it a slam dunk.

NOM, FRC, AFA, etc are shoveling sand against the tide. The sand castle, and the kingdom of homophobia they have built doesn't stand a chance.

Please wait...
