Remember Constance McMillen? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/candace-gi…
2
As someone who grew up 35 minutes away from Sullivan, this doesn't shock me.
3
@1 That's who I thought of immediately.

Also, call for the special-ed teacher to be removed.
4
I find it especially alarming that several of the adults in the facebook group seem to be medical professionals.
5
Uh, what is the website where the report by Paige Preusse appearsm? It looks like a TV news station page, but the site address is My Wabash Valley, not anything that includes a tv station's call letters. The whole story, which is where Dan is quoting from, includes only points of view of the homophobic crowd, and the last paragraph tells readers to visit the Facebook page for more information: In other words, the article credited to Preusse supports the homophobes.
6
You can't leave a comment on their FB page without joining the group. I don't think I could stomach that.
8
You can report them as a hate group to Facebook. Next to the "Join Group" button is a little menu icon - if you click it, it shows the option to report the group.
9
I've sent links about this story to Hufington Post. I would think that they would run with it.

11
My Wabash Valley is associated with WTWO channel 2. They are an NBC affiliate.

@7 It doesn't matter if there are GLBT people or not. That's like noting that there were no black people in some little Southern town that followed Jim Crow. Who cares if the number of black citizens was zero, three, or a hundred? The point is that they were discriminating. Same here.

And they find gay people offensive? I find the whole damn town offensive. Thank you to all those loving Christians for reminding me why I'd rather sleep in and watch football than go to their silly, boring weekly variety show. Who cares about their stupid tracks and verses when I can just watch how they live? That tells me all I need to know. Way to show God's love and draw the people in.
13
I knew a couple of kids who went to Sullivan in the 90s. A few were openly gay.
14
@8, that was fun to do! Also, looks like something's hinky with Dan's links to the principal and assistant principal emails: they're dspringer@swest.k12.in.us and shannon@swest.k12.in.us.
15
I made a request to join the group.
16
It's sad that this kind of thing happens in this day and age.

However, I find messaging the high school students on the page a bit creepy stalkerish. Maybe I'm too old.
17
What happens if you report them as a hate group and then request to join?
18
Here's a biblical quote for those little haters - as you sow, so you reap. If you sow the wind, don't be surprised when you reap the whirlwind.
19
And the writer of the story, Paige Preusse, appears to be a fresh-faced young maroon whose last gig was as an Unpaid Intern at Fox News in Chicago. On her blogger homepage she clumsily embraces a success-based definition of Christianity and types out shitty sentence after shitty sentence. Poor thing:
One of the things about much older texts that I find engaging is that words are strung together in expressive flows of emotion..so much so that they can be considered art..take Shakespeare, his captivating complex style of writing can make you fall in love with his purposefully selected words laden with thought and passion. The complexity of his writing adds an element of intrigue that heightens its appeal. Many people enjoy decoding his lyric phrases, myself included.
http://paigegetspersonal.blogspot.com
20
@7 I thought this too. But, then I thought, what's more offensive: being a bigot because you're fighting against something, or being a bigot just for the sake of being a bigot?

Seriously. What's more offensive: holding a segregated prom because there are black people in your town, or declaring your prom segregated before there are black people to segregate?

Although, the high school does have 600, which at a guessed rate of 5%, there may be 30 gay kids, closeted and out. Or 8 kids in the senior class. So, I'm guessing that gay and/or bi kids are there, and I'm guessing the first ones came out recently. Which would make the above paragraphs moot.
21
@19 I had to decode that paragraph. It roughly translates to, "I dropped out of high school." Oy vey.
22
I'm guessing the special education isn't very special, and they probably have their own prom as well.

23
What the hell is wrong with Indiana? They have TWO Big Ten universities, yet they make Iowa look like Belgium.
24
At least where I attended high school in small town Indiana, it was the same Christian blowhard kids that got pregnant at prom...oh but that isn't a sin is it?!
25
What is it that they "don't agree with"? What is "offensive"? I presume that the prom theme isn't Quiet Eye for the Straight Prom, so their core disagreement must be the very presence of queer youth. The natural conclusion (and one they would probably concede to in private), is that they oppose the very existence of queer people. I remember the bullying in high school, the sense of being utterly isolated, the sophisticated and deliberate mechanisms of ostricization marshaled against me. But to have the parents, the community be involved... These little towns like Itawamba and Sullivan are indicted when things like this happen, and who can step in and right the wrongs, or explain to these people how heinous their actions are? You have a right to be wrong in this country, you even have a right to set a bad example to your kids... but surely this is past that line.
26
I just reported them. I also sent the admins a message with the report (you can do that.) I have also posted the pink on my own wall encouraging my friends to report the group and pass it on. This type of behavior is absolutely intolerable. It's like we've all gone back to Jim Crow, but we're going after another group. What's next, a spectacle lynching??
27
What is it with these podunk towns who believe they can get away with this crap in PUBLIC schools?? You can have your Bigot Prom in the gym at the so-called "christian" church!

Meanwhile, the mayor of *another* podunk town – this one in Ohio – resigned today because she was getting SO much flak from saying that she "didn't want a queer on the police department." http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/…

status on the fb page (irony alert):
Bonnie McCammon
Don't forgot about the meeting today at the first Christian Church at 1:30! We need to get as many parents and students there as possible to really make this a go! Come in through the back doors hope to see everybody there:)
30
I reported the group....I kinda want to report one of the admins to SOMEBODY for spelling the perfectly good name Ariadne as "Aryadney". Then I saw her daughter's name is "Adryanne". That's gotta be some sort of child abuse right there.

I think it's actually progress that they're holding their own bigot prom rather than trying to ban the gays from the real prom. They know that doesn't work anymore, they know they're losing. I hope lots of straight but non-hatey students roll their eyes and go to the real prom. And yeah, I'm sure lots of abstinence only teens will get knocked up after bigot prom.
33
Doesn't the movie Footloose take place in Indiana?

Are we observing a case of life imitating art here, in this particular instance the dancing ban being supplanted with ostracizing gays with a "Traditional" prom?

What frightens me the most about this all is that they claim their actions to be motivated by God's love.
34
@24 - At my extremely small school it was the Christian prudes who got pregnant between soph and junior year and had to go away and visit an aunt for six months, too. But, no, it's not a sin, because if you go to Jesus he will wash you in the blood and take your sins away and you get to start anew. Unfortunately, the stupid and the bigot parts usually go along with you in your renewed sinlessness.
35
I graduated from SHS six years ago. While it has its fair share of bigots like most small towns, I urge all to not condemn the whole town for said bigots. There are plenty of kind people there that wholly support an inclusive prom. It should be noted that the school district is not opposed to same sex couples attending (thank goodness). This is a small side group wanting to put on their "prom".

In regards to the number of LGBT kids in Sullivan, coming out isn't exactly a new thing. There were several kids that came out while I was in school. Thankfully, it seems like it is becoming more common for kids to be themselves in Sullivan.
36
I am a student at Sullivan High School. I just wanted to let you all know that the school is NOT the bad guy in the situation. The school is ACCEPTING them! The majority of students at SHS are supportive of same sex couples attending the prom being held by the high school. With that said, the only prom they are banned from is the traditional one that is being planned by the people who are against same sex couples. The only way they can attend the traditional prom (that is not supported by the school) is if they come with someone of the opposite sex!! Please do not say that all people in Sullivan County are Anti-Gay Bigots because I as well as others support the same sex couples!!!!
37
They removed their FB page. But I got their pics minutes before. http://venturephilosophy.blogspot.com/20…
38
What about violent misogynist Chris Brown at a front row seat at the Grammy's being lauded by all the media?

Nothing to say SLOG?

Might impact those Hollywood donations to Obama right?

Hypocritters....
39
I love making them shut up and shut down.
40
the website the story was posted on was wtwo you can go on their facebook page -wtwo-tv and see it. It's disgusting. I'm from Sullivan and truely ashamed. I hope that "teacher" gets what she deserves
41
I am a senior at Sullivan High School. Just to let all of you know it is NOT the school that is banning same sex couples!! I hate how the school is being made out as the bad guy, that is not the case at all. The only prom that's banning them is the "traditional prom" that is being held somewhere else (it is not supported by the school). The only way they can go to the traditional prom is if they go with someone of the opposite sex. Sullivan High School is ACCEPTING the same sex couples and the staff at SHS is for the gpsame sex couples going and so are the majority of student and people in the community!!!! I absolutely hate how my town is getting called Anti-Gay Bigots because a few "christians" are planning a separate prom! Not all of Sullivan is like that I can damn well guarantee it. So please stop saying all of Sullivan County is like that because we aren't. My date (who is a guy) and I are attending the school prom that is ALLOWING same sex couples to go!
42
WTWO-TV is where the story was posted, check it out on facebook wtwo-tv ... it's disgusting.
43
We shun you because we love you. It's what Jesus would do. Amen.
45
Well, I got banned.
46
I am from this town and I am outraged! I have spent hours online discussing this with so many people and believe me, this is not the views and concerns of the majority of our community! Friend me on Facebook and you can go to http://mywabashvalley.com/fulltext?nxd_i… to watch the news clip WTWO News Channel 2

The woman in the video is a special Ed teacher, Diana Medley, which is the Northeast School Corporation and her email is medleyd@nesc.k12.in.usf

Thank you for your support, we have to get this situation turned around for the kids and the community. It is unacceptable and disgusting.

Miranda Webster Hay
47
@41 thank you for writing! I'm very glad to hear there's support by your school and peers to keep the real prom a welcoming place for ALL your classmates. Rock on!

Christianity is a choice. It is not an inborn characteristic. it has to be taught, and if it ceases to be taught, it will disappear.

Homosexuality is genetic. It has existed in our species since the dawn of history, and predates every extant religion s well as every known extinct religion. It exists in nature in virtually every animal species, usually at around the same statistical rate.

If the argument is between something that exists only in our minds (christianity) and something that is hardwired in our genes (homosexuality), I can already tell you which one will outlast the other.

You cannot change my DNA. But I can change my mind. I might very well have grown up to be a christian. The decades of intolerance that religion has shown to me and people like me, as well as the insane idea that you can alter your DNA by praying to a phony god or muttering any other kind of incantation, has disabused me of all beliefs I might otherwise have had.

Do you knwo what the single fastest growing religion in America is? It goes by a few different names. Sometimes people will say they are agnostic. Others will say atheist. Still others will say they have no religion, or are unaffiliated. In all cases, it's the same. You are driving America out of the pews with your intolerance. And much like so many other religions that came and went before yours, your religion will become mythology very soon if you do not change. Jesus, Thor, Odin, Zeus... it's just a matter of time before they all wind up in the exact same dustbin.

Unless you grow the fuck up. Judaism has survived, and that's in spite of real attempts to destroy it, not just the fake "war on xmas" nonsense the christians cook up as part of their oppression complex. Judaism survived because it can change. The god of Judaism isn't afraid of being questioned, and doesn't threaten his followers with hellfire if they reject him. You could learn a few lessons from the Jews.

And if you don't... Zeus.
50
I'd crash the straight prom if I lived anywhere close. Some nearby queers - and a few hundred of their best friends - should pay them a visit.
51
Tellingly, the editors of mywabashvalley.com see fit to print the word "[censored]" wherever commentators to the original article wrote "sex" or "sexual." Good thing they don't read The Stranger or their heads would explode!
52
51,

or their cocks.
53
Wow. For a nothing town, they sure have a bunch of different Evangelical, Pentacostal and Fundamentalist churches.

Dan, here's the problem with your admonition for Christian "NALTS" to chime in and try to exert some influence: Those kind of folk don't even recognize other denominations as Christian. They're totally cock-sure that they're the only ones who know the right way to worship/live/believe. To them, others are just heretics and worse.
54
They find gays attending the prom with same sex dates offensive but I'm sure they haven't even put any thought into how many of these "Christian" kids will be having some hot sweaty ungodly sex in the back of mommy and daddy's car that night. I'm so glad they are focused on the important issues. Time for another hushed hasty abortion for daddies little princess. Stupid bigots.
55
There's a petition to discipline the special ed teacher:
https://www.change.org/petitions/diana-m…
56
Okay, folks from Sullivan. I admit that I let my own prejudices about small town life confirm for me that Sullivan and Sullivan High School are the sorts of places where you don't come out of the closet if you want to save your hide. It's very nice to see that there are many folks in Sullivan who are accepting of gays and lesbians, and apologize for my hasty conclusion. I guess the bigots can hold their bigot prom so long as they do it in their own private non-tax exempt club with their own private funds, but it shouldn't be in the school, obviously.
57
I love bigot Bonnie McCammon's "Come in through the back room" request in her comment. Seriously, How. Stoopid. Is. She?
58
They are having thier prom at an old gym that's privately owned and they have thier own bank account for donations to help them pay for their separate prom. I know Bonnie personally and before all of this about the same sex couples going to the school prom came out, she told my friends and i that she wasent even going to go to the school prom and then when it was announced that they were allowing same sex couples to go i was so appauled by her comments about them going!!! All I can say is that I'm soo happy I'm going to the school prom where everyone is accepted for who they are!
59
I live in Sullivan, and I am beyond disgusted at the ignorance of a few in our community! I am sad that THIS is how Sullivan has hit the map! We have a LOT to be proud of, but this is not it! What I want everyone to know is, only a handful of people in Sullivan County support this discriminatory outcry against LGBT... most of us are very supportive of an inclusive prom and are not judgemental! I commend our school officials for not being bullied into denying the petition (although it shouldn't have taken a petition for same sex couples to be present at Prom)! I suspect that these parents aren't trying to give their children the prom their children want, but are trying to give their children the prom they want FOR their children! I graduated from SHS in 1984 and I can tell you, I can name MANY kids that went to school from 1980 -1984 that were "out". It isn't looked down upon as much as you would think... just because we are a small town, doesn't mean we aren't open-minded... well MOST of us!
60
Look at all 9 of those people who support that traditional prom nonsense.
61
To all the inclusive and supportive people in Sullivan and its high school: THANK YOU for being exactly who you are. Keep fighting the good fight!
62
@61 Seconded. It's encouraging that so many members in the community have come out to assert that the bigots don't represent their community. It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out. Two years ago, at Itawamba, only half a dozen students attended the school-sponsored prom, with the rest of the student body attending a secret prom that brave Constance McMillan wasn't invited to. The best thing Sullivan could do is let the bigots have their wholesome, heteros-only hootenanny, and then have nobody show up. Fingers crossed.
63
@28
Great outcome there in Pomeroy, Ohio, with the mayor resiginig and the police chief and the rest of the department, as well as most of the town, it would seem, standing behind the cop.

Great to see some Sullivan people here. Hope they'll continue to come here and comment.
64
I think Diana Medley (the special ed teacher) has no sort of purpose in life. I don't. I personally don't. I'm not sorry.
65
We have a lot of leftover nukes in this country, why not use them and eradicate the centers of hate.

Yes, I hate hate, go ahead, hate me for it, I'll only hate that too.
66
What the F does Chris Brown have to do with Obama? And why are you trying to derail the thread, jerk (SROTU)?

K @65 -- we can't nuke the bad guys because there are so many good guys mixed in with them.

@students from this county: Good luck and thanks for letting us know that it isn't the whole town that is bigoted.
67
One of the commenters on the page with the video put up a Facebook link that might be Medley's. There's a photo with a man and a woman, and the woman kind of looks like the photo on Slog. The page will probably be up at least until she wakes up in the morning.
68
I got a failure notice from Diana Medley's email address. That could mean that her inbox is full beyond capacity or that it has been disconnected. Both would be good signs. ;-)

FYI, they are having bigot prom at something called the Downtown Gym? Is that a business? A city facility? Can one of the commenters from Sullivan let us know how to contact this facility so we can properly express our displeasure that they are hosting a hate gathering?
70
Contact page for First Farmers bank, which they are using to gather funds for their hate speech: http://www.ffbt.com/First_Farmers_Bank_a…

Write and respectfully ask FFB&T to deny service.
71
FYI, for Sullivan County here's the breakdown of the 2013 election results:

Romney 59.1% (4902)
Obama 38.5% (3191)

(by contrast, IN as a whole went 54.3% Romney to 43.8% Obama)

For the senate race though they helped kick Mourdock away from that seat:

Donnelley 51.0% (4134)
Mourdock 43.1% (3491)

There are counties in southern IL, IN, and OH that are way more conservative than Sullivan, at least if you go by voting results. Just sayin'.

72
@16
"It's sad that this kind of thing happens in this day and age."

"This kind of thing" will always happen if we don't eliminate the poison of religion. Even the liberal "not all christians are like that" kind.

When you assume a supernatural world, that is a train of thought that does not have a basis. When you start from that, you will automatically lead yourself to a bad idea.
73
Couldn't it be reasoned that purposelessness is a purpose in and of itself? After all, if the good SE teacher and those like her don't have to devote resources to the project of assisting those with no purpose in life, as they clearly wish to do, then do they not owe a debt of gratitude to the homosexuality of those purposeless people for being the indicator that warned them off of devoting their time, money and effort to helping them?

That sounds rather Jesuitical (like the argument in The Bachelors that Ronald Bridges' epilepsy is a sign that he never had a vocation because no epileptic can be a priest), though. And we all know the likelihood of Roman Catholic not being accepted as Christian.
74
I really think the teacher's address is wrong. Take off the f from the end and it should work. All the teachers I know in the state have emails that end with us. So I think the f is a mistake. Email away. This whole thing is absurd and frustrating that we haven't moved past this after all this time!
75
Just registering my vast bogglement that Aryadney believes the Bible has a position on prom.

If Jesus had had a prom--if ancient Jewish custom had included such a concept, and before you laugh too hard consider the Ruth and Naomi story which heavily implies sleeping with someone at the harvest festival was kinda what happened after all the drinking stopped--he would have made sure to include lepers, tax collectors, and anyone else hated and excluded by those fancying themselves the moral majority of the community.

Also, kiddies: "We love you, but we will never publicly accept you" is not a consistent message. That might be the reason you're having so much trouble conveying it. And if you read the Bible, you will never find Jesus saying "I love you, but I will never allow you to be in the same public gathering as myself. But I value you as a person, it's cool."
76
Blacks still live with segregated proms so this is not surprising at all.
77
How in the literal fuck can people like this still exist in the 21st century and on top of that, call themselves educators? All they are teaching is bigotry and intolerance. Every kid has the right to go to their prom and be treated with dignity and respect. How dare anyone tell the LGBT couples that they cannot participate in the Grand March because their sexuality might offend some uptight, bigoted assholes that really need to just love like the bible says....and move the fuck on. Seriously
78
I live in a neighboring town to Sullivan and I just want to say this bigots are the minority not the majority. Many people are putting down Indiana as a whole but there are a great deal of us fighting for equality, including the administration. It is disappointing that this is how our area is being view because of these "Christians". It's tragic people still use the Bible and Jesus as a cover for their ignorance and discrimination.
79
I always have to heave a sigh and roll my eyes whenever self-proclaimed Christians indignantly declare that homosexuality defies "the word of God". This argument is both cowardly and disingenuous -- using biased interpretations of cherry-picked biblical passages to justify their brand of social intolerance and religious self-righteousness.

Once again we see the direct correlation between the extent of a religion's orthodoxy and the magnitude of its members' intolerance of those with differing points of view or who do not share their tenets, politics, mores, or lifestyle choices.

Yet another reason why religious dogma and public policy make poor bedfellows, and why people who promote religion-based intolerance, discrimination, and bigotry have no business working at a public school.
80
Holy horseshit, a mixed prom in Indiana without bigots is something I'd be afraid of!
Well, haters eventually die folks, forget about them. Nice to see that the HS is standing behind the mixed crowd. If the holy cant stand it they can go dunk each other's heads in the water like on the weekend!
81
@43 "We shun you because we love you."

"..and we want you to kill yourselves."

Completed that for you. Because Jeebus's love is all about teen suicide.
82
Here's the thing that I don't get.

I commonly hear these self-declared Christians say that they don't hate homosexuals, they hate the sin of homosexual sex. So if the queers would just stop having sex then they would be cool with it.

If that were the case, then why do they have a problem with homosexual couples who are not having sex? It is, I presume, because they confidently believe that the couple is having sex at other times.

So if they are so confident that homosexual couples at the prom are having sex and they don't want them there because that homosexual sex is a sin, then how is it different from heterosexual couples at the prom when they believe that sex among those couples is also a sin.

I'm not saying this well, but if they oppose same-sex couples at the prom because it would be a sin for them to have sex, then shouldn't they also oppose mixed sex couples at the prom since it would also be a sin for them to have sex as well (unless they are married)?

Am I all wrong about this or are they?
83

84
Oopsy, dupe posting. You do know they call Indiana the Mississippi of the Midwest right? It's okay, Ohio is still in the 6th century and Kentucky has the "Creation Museum", thus they're all right next to each other.
85
The "come in through the back door" line has Freud busting a gut.
86
@82 "If that were the case, then why do they have a problem with homosexual couples who are not having sex? It is, I presume, because they confidently believe that the couple is having sex at other times."

This is a great argument, and I think it would be interesting to see the contortions that a self-proclaimed chaste homosexual couple would cause them to twist themselves into... because you suspect, perhaps as strongly as I do, that for all their "love the sinner; hate the sin" rhetoric, their problem is the homosexuals themselves.
87
Interesting Facebook note at the end: "Read Genesis 19" Does this woman mean we should get pregnant by our fathers?
88
@82, @86 I think you're onto something!

I'm suddenly imagining a parallel to the whole straight viginity-pledge Christian thing, with virginity/promise rings for gay kids and same-sex couples who are "saving themselves for marriage." And, gay virginity balls, where sons and daughters dance with their fathers and mothers.

Okay, okay... If you can stop the gag reflex for a second, let me say that it isn't so much for the gay kids themselves, or even their virginity (we all know these stupid pledges get violated all the time, by straights anyway), it's to exploit the hypocritical "Christian" attitudes. Put the kids on the same playing field, "morally," and then let's watch a few bigot heads explode.

I'll make the popcorn.
89
The principal will be doing an interview with a local station shortly.
90
Am I the only one who thinks this is great?

So all the bigots are self selecting themselves to not attend the real prom to instead congregate together at their fake prom.

Meanwhile all the normal people get to go to real prom without having to worry about being harassed by the bigots.

Talk about a win.

When I was in school if all the bigots voluntarily agreed to not go to the real prom I would have been thrilled. I may have felt safe enough to bring another guy as my date if that had been the case.

Please, all the gay hating bigots of the world, continue to self segregate yourselves away from the normal, decent people. I can't help but think we would all be much happier that way.
91
Anybody else notice that Curt Bedwell named his daughter Curtni? If anything is an affront to God, it is that name.
92
What about the bank and the gym? Any pressure and protests/calling campaigns against them?
93
What about the bank and the gym where this is supposed to be held? Any pressure or protests/calling campaigns against them?
94
I feel bad for the Children of the Adult Bigots. We all know that the Younger Generation is more progressive than their parents, so I would guess that there will be some number of Straight kids who will be pressured by their parents to go to the Bigot Prom instead of the Real Prom.

As for the Bigot Prom itself, I bet that it is a lame bust.
95
@82 - that's a great point. You should try submitting it as an op-ed to the local newspaper in IN.
98
I have an idea - yes, yes let's have a separate prom for the LGBT students! Let's see if Lady Gaga herself wants to host it and show these kids a much more awesome time. Maybe raise awareness, get some damn awesome food and furniture, and ===everybody=== would be welcome.
99
I am a parent in Ohio and I would never think to ban any child from their High School Prom. Not only is that unjust it is unchristian like. God said you are to love one another. Not just a straight person over a gay person. I don't think being gay is a choice. I believe that u can not help who your heart wants. You as adults are punishing the kids, your son or daughter or maybe even your grandchild could be gay and not telling you due to the way you are reacting. How would you feel if they said no brunettes or red heads could attend, because they are not the chosen people. I believe that is what Hitler believed, that if you weren't blonde and blue eyed you were not chosen to be gods people. it did not work for him and it should not work for you. Let these children enjoy their Prom they have earned it by attending school and working hard to stay there. Many children do not even make it that far. If you are true Christians then you will step back and embrace them as God's children.

I hate to say this, but I think the 'anti-gay' folks are more gay than the gay folks! Why, because the anti-gay folks tend to protest loudly about their anti-gayness!

Private individuals should be allowed to throw their own private parties and invite or not invite whoever they want. Sorry, but this is America and there's no law against being a dick and waving "You can't come to my party!" in people's faces. And we get to call them on their jerkery, but that's as far as it ought to go.

The school is having an all-students-welcome official prom, which is as it should be.

My guess? Lots of straight kids are going to go to both parties just because they want to go to two parties.
