Let us reflect on the NRA's stance on guns in schools May 1st, 1999:
From Rolling Stone: Wayne LaPierre – a lifelong political operative who had steadied the National Rifle Association through many crises – stood before an American flag and soberly addressed the nation about firearms and student safety: "We believe in absolutely gun-free, zero-tolerance, totally safe schools. That means no guns in America's schools, period," LaPierre said, carving out a "rare exception" for professional law enforcement. LaPierre even proposed making the mere mention of the word "guns" in schools a crime: "Such behavior in our schools should be prosecuted just as certainly as such behavior in our airports is prosecuted," LaPierre said.

This speech wasn't delivered in an alternate universe. The date was May 1st, 1999, at the NRA's national convention in Denver. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold's rampage at Columbine High School in nearby Littleton, Colorado, had just killed 13 students and teachers, shocking the conscience of the nation.

Will the teachers also be required to provide their own firearms and bullets? They already buy school supplies for their students these days.

How dare teachers be anything but a bullet shield in the event of a school shooting!

Mr. LaPierre wanted it to be a crime to TALK about guns in schools. It was the NRA's official position that people should be prosecuted for TALKING about guns in schools.

@9 the gun nuts prefer to argue over whether an AR-15 is an assault rifle or not. They don't give a shit about dead kids, just that they have their right to a gun and that no uppity black man in the White House is going to take it from them. A this point, even if their own six year old was killed, they'd blame it on the government for 1) not allowing the six year old to have a gun at school, 2) not forcing the teacher to be armed, 3) not having armed guards at every entrance, and 4) the fact that the government has compulsory education requirements. I've blocked so many gun nuts from my Twitter account it isn't even funny. They can't be reasoned with.

Goldy, you may not like their proposals but they are doing more than you are when you advocate for a ban on "assault weapons".

I had a math teacher in junior high who was a competitive marksman. He used to bring his guns to class and show them to us. When we returned after winter break there was a substitute teacher. Can you guess why ?

Jeff Cooper's four rules of firearms safety:

1. All firearms are always loaded.

2. Never let the muzzle of a firearm point at anything you are not willing to destroy.

3. Keep your finger off the trigger unless your sights are on the target.

4. Be sure of your target and what is behind it.

But to reduce gun violence maybe they could start by arresting criminals, you know like the kid that got 9 months for beating Tuba Man to death, then got released so he could go shoot a man to death at munch bar.

The bill should include language explicitly declaring (acknowledging, really) that any school district that adopts such a gun policy is fully liable for the deaths and damages that result from the misuse of any employee's firearm on school grounds. Am thinking of the 200-pound senior who physically snatches that little Glock from under the blouse of his 125-pound teacher and proceeds to...well, you get the picture.

I was answering the question in regards to what I would do to reduce gun violence. As for the armed teachers question it is the same reason that I am armed, when seconds count the police are minutes away. Schools are chosen by these socially defective spree shooting maniacs specifically because they are "gun free zones" meaning the shooter is choosing a soft target with little chance of resistance. Most spree killers stop when met with armed resistance. A properly trained teacher armed with a weapon properly retained in an appropriate holster does a lot more to thwart a shooter than an unarmed teacher. When faced with an attacker having a gun beats not having a gun, is it that hard to understand?

I don't know about you but my High School had slightly over 3000 students in it. There was at least one "riot" (a relative term given that most involved a handful of actual fights and mostly a lot of confused pushing and shoving) per year.

Take the number of kids shot in school massacres in the past two decades and subtract that from the number of accidental shootings just last week. You'd end up with a positive number.

And you went to public schools, right? Most of the teachers can't even teach, which is their main fucking job. But you expect them to excel at this sideline gig and not accidentally kill someone? That's some serious denial.

I am very, very against accidental shootings, hence Col. Jeff Coopers 4 rules as I stated in post #19, I think these rules should be common knowledge for anyone who might possibly ever come in contact with a firearm. If followed they would prevent almost all accidental shootings.

I think we are on the same page about public school teachers, most are absolutely worthless. Also most don't adhere to a personal philosophy that would be in agreement with carrying a defensive firearm. I believe that being armed should be voluntary, I do not think being armed should be compulsory, I do not believe that a government or society should be able to MAKE an individual do anything.

But thinking back to I can think of one teacher who would carry (and probably did), he was my physics teacher, and two that might, my auto and welding teachers. All of them were educated people with masters degrees who regularly taught students how to use dangerous equipment.

Believe me, as a gun owner I know that guns are fucking dangerous and need to be treated with the utmost respect. My other hobbies include alpine climbing and backcountry skiing which are also seriously fucking dangerous, in all my pursuits I take steps to minimize risk. But in the end I guess I value liberty over safety as I am not one to be content laying in bed and watching TV.

As for my vision of America, I want to see free people, confident in their own decisions being successful in life.

Unless the teachers get paid a little more in hazard pay, I doubt many would sign up for this. Republicans dont trust teachers to teach our children, why would they ever trust them to protect them?

My physics teacher in the 12th grade, in 1968, fired a rifle in class to demonstrate conservation of momentum. It didn't even seem like a weird thing to do back in those days.
