I'm praying for Mark Driscoll, who talks a lot of shit about people he doesn't know, which is something his God has commanded him not to do.
2
Mark Driscoll sure knows a lot about the swing rooms at Club Z though. *ahem*
3
@2, sorry...SLING rooms at Club Z
4
Mark Driscoll's god is a ginormous asshole. I certainly hope that Obama does not know him.
5
This makes me incredibly sad for this man and his "followers." If Mr. Driscoll had listened to the inauguration speakers he would have heard the message of "Love One Another"-- which is the spiritual lesson he should be teaching those who listen to him. I hope those who saw his message really saw the petty non-Christian message behind it.
7
Don't blame any god for Driscoll. He's a spontaneously-appearing asshole -- there are a lot of them.
8
Do jokers like him really not get how "I'm praying for [person I loathe whose goals I oppose]" is obviously transparent bullshit?
9
Mark Driscoll isn't calling Obama a Muslim or an Atheist or anything like that, he's just pointing out that anyone who doesn't follow Mark Driscoll isn't a Real Christian.
10
If Mr. Driscoll had been listening to the speeches today, he would have heard the message of "Love One Another"--- which is the spiritual lesson he should be teaching his followers. I hope those who saw and followed his message on twitter today read what was behind his comment--- a complete lack of Christian teachings, petty attitude, and judgement.
11
Driscoll should have slapped a "bless your heart" on the end of that, to really drive the point home.
12
I'll agree with the "tool" part.
13
My, but aren't the grapes sour today? Driscoll's business (and that's all it is) is doing better than ever. What he got to gripe about?
14
Here's praying that all those young (philosophically naive) tithees/attendees to Mars Hill will actually read this tweet and think carefully about it as they drive their SUV to Target. (will this prayer of mine be answered? "yes it will, and 'no' is the answer")
15
I like the shift in tone with his next tweet: "Kicking off a week of giveaways with a free iPad mini. Enter to win before midnight".
16
Gross. Can the feds take his pseudo-church/cult tax-exemption away?
17
That man and his institution are a pox on our city.

I would rather spend my days with the people Driscoll hates - the gays, feminists, liberals, environmentalists, pro-choicers, sex workers, etc. - than spend even one Sunday playing around with his stupid cult.

And I have a feeling that Jesus Christ would have felt the same way. He spent his time among those rejected by the dominant religious orthodoxy of his time, and man, he despised those Pharisees (of which Driscoll/Mars Hill are the modern day equivalent).
18
@11--LOL, I was thinking the same thing.

As a southern (formerly evangelical) transplant to Seattle, I'm kind of in awe of Driscoll's fusion of the southern tendency to insult via "prayer request" with Seattle passive aggression, here.

Driscoll's god sounds like a fucking asshole, and I am happy to not know him.
19
This Driscoll guy should take a look at Matthew 7:2
20
Westboro Baptist says what?
21
Please keep him in Seattle. Tacoma doesn't need this crap.
22
Thanks for sharing, Pastor Douchebag.
23
So, Mark Driscoll 'knows God'? Sounds like megalomania and delusion to me...and people say it's not a cult. Huh, go figure.
24
and get the fuck offa my lawn...er.. hill.
25
Maybe we all should have listened to the inauguration speaker - LOVE ONE ANOTHER - terribly disappointing in all this hate we are sharing, way to be hypocritical Seattle.
26
Oh, the old "God likes me better than you because you're doing it wrong" school of religious belief. Always a huge red flag.

"God is everywhere, but especially inside my church. Pay at the turnstiles."
27
@16, agree, the deduction for charitable donations shouldn't apply to buying and building a franchise.
28
Aren't we about to the part in this script where the Pastor Mark character is pulled over by the police with a unconscious Laotian rent boy in his trunk?
29
So, how soon til Discoll takes his cult to Guyana?
30
If Jesus/God could tweet back, "Don't talk about me like you know me."
31
@25- You can't call me a hypocrite, it wasn't me talking at the inauguration, nor have I listened to it, nor have I ever espoused the view that one should have anything but contempt for hateful conmen like Driscoll.
32
@25's definition of "hypocrite" is "someone who doesn't live up to what I profess to believe."
33
So because Driscoll doesn't think the president is a Christian means that his church is a cult? Seriously guys, you need to lay off and just relax. How are you any better than him by saying these hateful things?
34
Even the "Lord" gets to have an asshole...and here he is!

35
Awwww, the rest of the world doesn't give a shit about your hateful interpretation of "God"? How sad.
36
@33...nope, Mars Hill is a cult because Mars Hill is a cult.

Just like Driscoll's an asshole because he's an asshole.

37
I miss Ernst hardware.
38
YOU are a supercilious bastard, Mr. Driscoll. I don't know how you can be president of a church that espouses values you yourself are unable to ascertain.
39
@33:Do a little research about them, and in particular Driscoll and how he operates. Google is your friend.
I am so conflicted about this church. I despise that over gelled douche canoe Driscoll with all my heart. He teaches a reactionary, homophobic deeply misogynistic and superstitious pile of crap with a light drizzle of Jesus on top. But I have four friends who have found a home in that church, and it has done them all good. One has found so much comfort and support during the double loss of his parents, and two of them have found their way to being good husbands and fathers where as in years back it was touch and go if they'd ever get out of the thug life at all.
I'm happy that they are happy, but when they start parroting Drisoll's more egregious crap on Facebook it makes me sick and sad inside.
40
@28: Not yet, I don't think. He's plenty famous locally, but he really needs to hit the big time on the national level before the unconscious Laotian rent boy can enter the picture.
41
I love it how some "christians" use "praying" as a means of derision.

I'm praying his God that Mark Driscoll learns how to be an asshole.

Like my other prayers, I doubt the imaginary man in the sky will answer.

43
Oh bigots, you are the horror movie of live -- creepy, ridiculous, scary, entertaining. Thank you for all that you bring to the table, mr. Driscoll. ;)
44
@19 FTW.

I also recommend Mark 3:28-30.
45
i hate mark driscoll in the face.
46
@39 I have no doubt that there are many good and decent people who attend Mars Hill churches. When you're so deeply involved with a group that's relatively sequestered from the outside world, it's easy to lose track of how the group is operating and perceived in the world at large. I was raised in a fundamentalist religious tradition so I understand what that's like.

But it doesn't change the church's belligerent and bigoted posture in the community. It doesn't negate the experiences of those unfortunate enough to suffer through "church discipline" or whatever the hell they call it. I think you can appreciate the individuals who helped your friends while having to like the institution. Good people can be found everywhere.
47
*not having to like. (dammit)
48
Doesn't Driscoll's Bible say, "Judge that ye be not judged"?
49
such a sad moment coming from a church - I really dislike it when people assume they know who has a relationship with God and who doesn't - based on their OWN definition and interpretation of the Bible....its so easy to pick and choose which scriptures your going to follow and others that can be considered 'outdated' -- but is literally just one verse away from each other.....
50
amazing how one can make such a judgement....there are churches that are just giving themselves bad names for statements like this - I am grateful to not belong to one of these types of churches - I go where literally love is spread from beginning to end -
51
@33, seen lots of that lame defense from his followers on Twitter. He's putting himself above the President because he knows God better and he knows that Obama doesn't believe in the Bible. Complete and utter lies.
52
@48

That was my exact reaction too. This one guy is judging this other guy saying that he doesn't follow the Bible... thereby not following the Bible himself because he's judging others. Driscoll's message is probably the most un-Christian thing I've seen in a while. How can this creep not see the hypocrisy?
53
@33 - What exactly is hateful about pointing out that someone who leads a Christian flock regularly says things that Christ would abhor?

You think Christ approves of Driscoll when he claims to know that Obama - who went to a Christian church his whole life - does not believe in God or that he's incapable of understanding an oath? Do you think He would approve of Driscoll bearing such witness to the world?

Just because the truth is ugly shouldn't reflect badly on the person who points it out. If this tweet is any indication, the leaders of Mars Hill are leading their flock astray. Jesus would weep.
54
I am sorry that there are so many hateful people bashing this man. Many of which point the judging finger and declare him a judge. Many spew hate filled curses upon him for his accused hateful speech. Please look at what you are saying.
55
@ various unregistered commenters likely from Mars Hill: Let me explain this for you clearly.

A lot of us here are under no ethical or moral obligation to not judge people, because we do not claim to live our lives according to a book that says (among other things) "judge not lest ye be judged." I am free to judge you and your misogynist douchebag of a pastor. And I do, enthusiastically! Doing so doesn't make me a hypocrite, because I do not profess anything different.

See how that works?
56
These cults "Mars Hill" and others, need to be exposed as to what they really are. Hate based organizations. That get tax free existence. They are no different than the KKK. Why do we as citizens put up with them being in our communities. Lets get together and rid this country of all these secretive organized groups of hate mongers. Just because it says its a religion.
57
1. Pastor Driscoll wants us to come to Him of our own free will, and bring Him lots of $$$ so he can expand his mi$$ion.

2. Pastor Driscoll wants us (especially us ladies) to love Him by keeping His commandments in humility, prayer, observing His law and offering sacrifice (in the form of our personal independence, autonomy, career goals, etc.) to Him.

3. Pastor Driscoll wants us to love our neighbor as ourselves (unless our neighbor is gay, or practices another religion, or--heaven forbid!--is an agnostic or an atheist).
58
I'd call this Driscoll person a tool, except for the fact that tools are useful, wonderful things....

So many helpful jackwagons out there, their little fingers must be sore from all the biblical cherry-picking they do...

Funny how they all, to a person, "conveniently" "overlook" Matthew 7:3.

Jackwagons.
59
I am again struck by how much, in some ways, I would prefer the Obama that lives in his opponents' heads---contemptuous of Biblical law, hostile to religion, ever seeking to turn us into a largely unarmed social democracy where status rootless cosmopolitan values dominate---to the one we've actually got. At times I'm tempted to think that they're doing it just to frustrate me, but then I remember that to them I and others of a similar humour are of no importance sufficient to that attention.
60
Mark Dingelberry is nothing more than a snake-oil-salesman-carnival-barker, using his god as a marketing tool to draw attention to the book he is hawking on his twitter page.

Christians who use their god as a marketing tool can rot in their imaginary hell.

61
President Obama is praying right now for God to guide him to know exactly who the fuck Mark Driscoll thinks he is and why anyone should care. Amen.
62
Obama barely opens his mouth without talking about god. What's with all these idiots who seem to think he's some passionate atheist?

These idiots just aren't satisfied with anyone who fails to lob the heads off of nonbelievers. At least the Taliban are honest about their ass-backwards extremism.

Notice how they're so quick and willing to believe in his Christianity when his pastor is (supposedly) anti-white.
63
wow. For folk who want love and dignity to come from someone, not much of it is coming from you all.
64
After the May 2011 apocalypse "scare," whoever put up signs around town about it neglected to take them down for at least six months. You'd think they'd want us to forget about it as quickly as possible? wallpaper
