Why bother regulating anything at all if we can't even regulate the one thing that sprays death upon countless Americans? Why do we regulate ladders? Why swimming pools? Why, when I open a bottle of vitamins, do I see a "protective seal" for my safety? I don't care about regulating vitamin packaging. I care about regulating semi-automatic assault rifles.

I propose an additional policy of an owner's complete responsibility for how a gun is used, regardless of who fires it. Shouldn't an owner of a deadly weapon make absolutely, positively sure that no one other than himself has any possible access to that weapon? If a kid gets his hands on it, if it can be and is stolen from the owner, or if someone other than the owner uses it to commit suicide, the owner is held negligent for allowing that weapon to be used.

We have stricter laws for Driver's Licenses than for guns. Written and operation tests, renewal requirements every few years, etc. If we had those kind of requirements (and some others in order to possess and renew your gun ownership) it might filter out some of the crazies.

Now get 60 votes or more in the Senate, 218 votes or more in the House, Obama's pen poised to sign it, and make sure you can convince 5 folks on SCOTUS, and we're home.

How about mandatory gun safes? Especially for bigger weapons that don't have a specific hunting use. Maybe for more than 2 or 3 guns? If someone's willing to spend that much time and effort collecting guns they should have to prove they own a safe that can hold them when they aren't in use. I don't think we should require use of them, but I know from experience that when you give someone the tools to be safer normally they are safer without having to tell them, it's just about having the tools and it should be seen as an expense that if you want that many guns please show me that you're not just lying them around your home. @16 There is no plan that could have kept guns out of the hands of any of the shooters hands. You guys just have a new cause to get round.

Is there a good, local way to become involved other than e-mailing and donating money? I would love to donate my time and energy to this cause, but can't seem to find anything in Seattle.

I donated money, signed the petition, and e-mailed Inslee and Obama... but I would love to be more involved locally.

Is there any way I can donate time or energy to Demand a Plan or other gun control advocacy groups here in Seattle?
