Come on, Goldy. You know the answer to your question.

Good for Palestine. Doesn't sound like full fledge recognition, but it's a start.

I think the objection came because, while a two state solution is the ideal solution, no second state exists right now, which makes recognition of Palestine as a state (even a nonmember observer state) awkward at best. Taiwan doesn't have even nonmember observer state status at the UN, and at least we know what its borders are. Palestine, on the other hand, is a hypothetical, borderless entity which could, ideally, become a state through the peace process. Recognition of a Palestinian state when the borders and nature of such a state aren't remotely understood or agreed upon can understandably be considered a threat to Israel's existence as it stands today, since they hypothetical Palestine would be composed of land within the current borders of Israel.

@2 Israel is a nuclear and, possibly, chemical- and biological-weapons military power. They are also the region's predominant economic power and they are close buds with the biggest dog in the pound, the U.S.A. Nothing is a threat to Israel's existence.

Israel and Palestine are like your two friends who keep breaking up and getting back together, generally due to their mutual inability to behave or be decent.

At first you listen and may even pick a side having heard one or both outline their litany of seemingly warranted complaints against the other. That bastard wronged your friend who was just trying to do right!

But then the police reports pile up with each trading off as the aggressor. You get tired of the endless calls by one or the other demanding that you help them to get revenge during a breakup stage. You begin to realize that they may in fact even like the dysfunction and that each both hates and completely needs the other. There is not a right side nor a wrong side, there are just a couple assholes.

At that point you stop caring.

@4: That is possibly the most succinct summary of my own feelings regarding the Holy Bombing Zones.
6
@3 You're right, but that's not the issue. The fact is, they're run by paranoid lunatics, who see a threat under every bush.

Also, I'm not convinced Israel wants the two-state solution. They've never shown any indication that they're willing to work for it.
7
@4 - wow, that was awesome.
8
I thought it was also because Israel and U.S. believe Palestine's leadership, Fatah (??), is competing with Hamas, whom they consider a terrorist organization. Although I could completely full of shit.
9
I wonder what the Czech Republic gets for being one of the 9 countries voting against...

@4 for most satisfying history read of the middle east ever. I'm from there and could not agree more. To be fair, though, it also applies to most conflicts from there: Sunni v. Shia, Christian v. Muslim, etc.

Nonmember observer state status allows Palestinian authorities to file charges of crimes against humanity at the International Crime Court, which has the potential to create a lot of negative publicity. Several states wanted to make their UN vote conditional on this issue.

@4, Before you wash your hands off it, please make sure your tax dollars aren't used to prop up one side over the other: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel%E2%8…

According to the BBC Israel/USA opposed the vote because it went against the two-state solution/process outlined in the 1993 Oslo Accords. Which, you know, nearly 20 years old and no two-states yet ... no surprises there. And no surprises that Palestine is attempting another method to obtain official legitimacy. Israel clearly isn't interested in the continued existence of Palestine and will continue to suffocate it to death, while the rest of the Arab world "supports" Palastinians w/o helping them.

Don't forget folks, --and I'm not taking sides here-- that the rest of the Arab world isn't really doing anything to help out the Palastinians. Oh sure, Iraq was giving money to the families of suicide bombers, and Iran is apparently shipping them rockets, etc. etc. But there could be refugees accepted into various states, you know, different exit strategies for the people stuck in a permanent warzone and shit. But no. They'd rather keep those fuckers stuck between a rock and Israel in order to perpetuate their own hatreds and ongoing war.

I truly feel for everyone in that situation. But it is a giant pile of fetid shit that almost no-one involved is really interested in solving...

The vote was 138-9. The nays included Micronesia, Palau, and the Marshall Islands. Do you think that maybe, just maybe, your "pox on both their houses" attitude concerning this issue is a bit superficial, American left? As in, the rest of the world sees something very obvious that for some reason isn't getting through here?
15
@2, @8, and @13 are right.

Recognizing a state that isn't a state is silly. The two sections of the Palestinian Authority, Fatah and Hama, can't constitute a future state until they stop hating each other as much as they hate Israel.
16
@15 Under that definition, it sounds like Israels policies of playing one against the other are working for them then.
17
@16, you're giving Israel more power than it has. Hamas is not being played by anyone; it has the weapons backing of Iran and Syria.
18
@Many on here, Palestine now has the same status as the Vatican City has.

I wonder why Czech Republic, Micronesia, Palau, Marshall Islands, Nauru and Panama voted no? Shocked, but not too shocked, that the Harper government voted no.

But wait! What's this? Hamas opposes the Palestinian Authority's bid.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2011/…

"Hamas, the Islamist faction that controls Gaza, opposes the Palestinian Authority's bid.

On Sept. 18, Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh told the legislative council in Gaza, "we reiterate our rejection of this bid," but he added that Hamas would "not place obstacles in the way of the establishment of a Palestinian state with full sovereignty."

Hamas officials have also complained that they were not consulted about the UN plans.

Hamas has banned public demonstrations supporting UN membership, making it more difficult to gauge popular sentiment in Gaza."

Well, of course I disagree wholeheartedly with Giffy. That is exactly how it is 'framed' in the Western jewish-owned media
to produce this VERY outcome. And they are fools that fall prey to it. If the world does not care(and this why
it likened to a 'squabbling couple')...then those telling the story are given a free hand
to do anything they wish. And of course, we KNOW what they wish. A "Piece Process" in which they constantly
steal another piece of Palestine. Land stolen to maintain a base-camp for the nefarious dealings of the judaic.
There is no "mutual" inability. This is 'cowboys and Indians' of the 21st century. You thought we were beyond
that type of oppression as a species? Think again when you factor in the supremacy doctrine of this gutter
religion.

Please wait...
