What a prick. And you can almost be sure that this wasn't the first incident. In domestic violence cases, there's usually a long history and build up before the woman actually calls for help. Based on the article's brief description of him, though, I'm not surprised.

If your definition of family doesn't include the right to slap your wife when she gets out of line, you're doing it wrong.
5
oh yummy...
a domestic tragedy to exploit!
6
This is because of gays getting married.

You'd think more people would know by now that a politician making "family values" into a big platform issue is going to have warped issues with family, sexuality, or both. These are people who think "family values" means "sufficient control over your brood unit and offspring." I'm not surprised in the least to discover that he abuses his wife.

Oh, and look: he's another one of these chickenshit assholes who makes thinly veiled gun-related threats towards the President and then denies it later:

"He drew national attention in October after posting a photo of his handgun to his Facebook page, alongside a message "welcoming" President Barack Obama to Tennessee. He denied that it was meant as a threat."

Violent AND too cowardly to own up to it. Yep, sounds like a typical Republican to me.

I feel sorry for his family. No doubt they've been pressured to pretend everything is "fine" at home for some time. Sure, the dude is a hypocritical douche and it's easy to mock him. Schadenfreude is delicious. Still, even if he rots in jail, the family will be the ones bearing the brunt of this terrible guy's actions. Again.
9
Why didn't she slap him back?
10
It's nice to know that Brad has a solid moral foundation thanks to his undergraduate studies at Oral Roberts University.
11
@10: ha ha, oral.
12
Check out the grip he has on her arm in that picture...no way this was a one-off incident.
13
But, but... they were so wholesome. How could it be?

@4 FTW
14
Why didn't she slap him back? Seriously? Because she was afraid if she did, he'd deck her.

Actually, if she's reporting him for a slap, there probably isn't longstanding serious physical abuse going on - she'd be too scared, if there were.
16
That's what he gets for using Gotham as a typeface.

That's "Biblical Marriage" for ya.

Ephesians 5: 22-24
Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

Clearly, she was not doing her biblical duty.
20
My immediate assumption was that it was a sex scandal, so in that sense it doesn't fit the pattern.
21
Well....you know how hard a campaign can be - and a losing one at that. A man needs to let off a little steam. And she doesn't look any worse for it. She probably got on his last nerve.

Vote Republican! Because Republican God lets you beat your wife!
22
Dan, don't you know that back in the good old days that conservatives want to return to that it was well within a husband's rights to beat his wife? It was considered nobody else's business not too long ago.
23
...and by the way, the South is guilty of a lot of things, but one of the things I always thought it wasn't guilty of was (if one had any self-respect whatsoever) was spousal abuse. Hitting a woman was the trashiest thing a man could do. I wasn't raise on a plantation. I didn't come from antebellum wealth, but my childhood buddies and I were raised to believe that there was nothing.....NOTHING!....lower than a man who raised his hand to a woman. Apparently, that isn't a Southern tradition anymore.
24
I figure every fundie family is like this. Some of them, the wife & kids will just take it, some will wait until everyone is old, a few will stand up when the abuse happens. But that's what "family values" means: obey the father, he gets his, fuck everyone else. If the sons tough it out, they can create their own harem. (look at the Romeny brood). For the women, it's just a horrible cycle.
25
If there's really a science to body language, this family photo screams "call the police."
26
@12, I noticed his death grip on her arm as well.
27
This is why dog whistle phrases like "traditional family values" are so dangerous. Traditionally, men could slap or spank their wives if they became uppity.
28
Who did they cast as white Steve Urkel?
29
Another wingnut whack-job. Literally, in this case.
30
@14 He did slap her hard enough for there to be a red mark still visible when her statement was taken, so I'd say it's possible this was the first time, but more likely that he had a habit of shoving and/or hitting her less forcefully, and very likely he had a pattern of emotional abuse and threats of physical violence.
31
@ 30 Entirely possible.

Though I have to remember a certain argument I was having with my teenage daughter one time, and I slapped her face. And then both of us were staring at my hand, going "How the hell did that happen?' I'd never been more than a "one gentle pat on the bum" kind of spanker, and hadn't done even that since she was maybe four. Sometimes it really does come out of nowhere, surprising even the person who does it.

Please wait...
