Jowly, head-tossing prigs no one else would wanna marry at least have each other to marry. Hooray for the OMOW status quo.

You can tell an a-hole when you see one, sometimes, and this Parker guy certainly looks and speaks like one.

One great bonus reason to vote for R-74, people - to stick it to the David Parkers of the world.

I don't even understand why this is a thing for them. If gay marriage is legalized, schools will teach kids that boys can marry boys... Well, yeah. They can. Boys CAN marry boys.

And what this crap about opting out? Parents don't get opt-out notifications for anything else, do they??

Wait, wait, wait. Are you insinuating that someone who cut a commercial for a political cause actually believes in his political cause? Cause that's some crazy mind blowing shit right there. This is the kind of news that I haven't been able to find ever since Paul Harvey died from not being alive enough. " ....and now, Dave Schmader with the REST of the story..."

@4 Precisely.

And because our side refuses to fight fire with fire we lose.
I said I wouldn't be surprised if R-74 is rejected.
Now I feel certain it will be rejected.
I would be thrilled to be wrong and as a result called every name in the book and have the worst wished upon me -- but sad to say the odds are in my favor.

Whoops, that should have been directed at Dominic not Dave. And Dominic - I actually think you're great. This post just didn't meet my expectations of you.

@7,

It seems as if the ad tries to portray the couple as something of an "everyman" (and woman) who common, non-bigoted folk could easily identify with. Providing some appropriate context for the guy hardly seems extraneous or irrelevant.
9
@6 Well, you're not in WA, so you don't really have any clue. I can't honestly say which was it will go. Although I'm prepared to party like it's 1999 if the polling bears out on election day.

As to your other point, this is how the marginalized & powerless win. They can't use the same tactics as their opponents. The bigots in power only have power. They try to wrap themselves in moral right. If you play their game, you end up being as morally bankrupt as they are. And without the funds to hide it, you'll lose out. The Civil Rights struggle holds endless lessons on how to overturn bigotry. One of the foremost is to act w/ the moral authority that your opponents claim. The bigots can't win against that: they can only forestall the inevitable.

Those aren't loses. Proposition 8 wasn't a loss. The bigots had to pay mucho dinero to fight it, call in their reserves. Ten years before, they could have swatted it aside w/o thinking. The anti-72 crowd, like those against Prop 8, had to go national to fight it. They can't defeat it at the local/state level. Every election, there will be another one to fight. Every election, they'll lose more money. It's inevitable. We're not losing, we're winning, no matter what happens on election day.

But I'm still preparing for a fucking huge party & dancing in the streets.

What a dickhole.

Please, everyone, getting out the vote in King County is crucial. Please consider volunteering for a shift of phone banking or door to door get out the vote efforts. The focus is on talking to SUPPORTERS and making sure they vote. Don't sit on the sidelines and wish you'd done more!

Anyone accusing someone of being a BIGOT is a BIGOT himself. Go look in the mirror!!!!!
13
Yes, Rosie, dazzle us with your acumen.
14
@12 - So that must mean you... My GOD! We're in a bigotloop!
15
Hold on now. Anyone who uses caps and multiple exclamation points for emphasis deserves a place in the discussion. This is the internet after all.
16
You can't fight this with facts, because the people who buy into this BS aren't concerned about facts in the first place. I've said it before, and I'll say it again- the way to get these people to vote for Ref 74 is to frame it entirely as a Church rights initiative. We should be airing commercials night and day in Eastern Washington featuring supportive clergy stating that "Ref 74 protects a church's right not to perform a gay marriage", with catchy slogans at the end like, "Referendum 74: Protect Church's rights on Marriage". THAT'S the way to convince these people to vote for it.
17
@12: The only good bigotry is your bigotry? A little less focus on the mirrors and a little more focus on remembering to take your meds, please, Rosie.

I feel really bad for his kid. Growing up in a hate-filled household can't be good for anyone.

Say, if he can ask for his kid to be taught about gay marriage, could other people ask for their kids not to be taught about straight marriage?

If Parker still lives in MA, then my biggest wish is that he be forced to encounter several SS married couples at a PTA event. I'd like to see him backed into a corner, eyes jerking back and forth in desperation because ... THE HORROR.

OTOH, let's pretend that his children will never learn at school that boys can marry boys. And, because of the insular nature of the bubble enforced by their father, they don't learn about it from any other source. Then, they graduate from school, walk out into the real world, read a newspaper for the first time, and realize that the world isn't at all like their father described. If they're lucky (not having been so indoctrinated they can no longer evaluate people and situations on their own merits), they'll only feel cheated that they'd never been taught how to interact sociably with a wide variety of people who are different from them.

I am so glad I saw this ad multiple times today, because I had no idea Ref 74 was about teaching grade school children who to marry. Oh wait, it has nothing to do with what your children are taught in school, it is about equal rights for adults. How is this bigoted fear mongering crap allowed on TV, when even WA state school officials are confused as to what this ad is suggesting will happen (because in reality the referendum will have no effect on their curriculum).
