Be careful, and be lucky! We don't want you getting hurt covering a GOP convention.
I wouldn't wish a cat-5 hurricane on anyone, but maybe there would be enough noticeable irony if, after invoking God in their invocation speech and saying something denying climate change, if say, a cat-3 storm tore the roof off the convention center.
As conservatives just LOOOVE to claim: hurricanes are God's judgement against sin. So if a hurricane causes a lot of damage in Tampa during the GOP national convention, that would mean....
I wish them all a safe a happy convention where Americans can see for themselves that Republicans have learned nothing from the past and are still pouring out the hate and oppression for others.
I was in Tampa at the beginning of hurricane season and watched a report on one of the local newscasts -- apparently, Tampa is frequently spared the full brunt of the big storms, as it's on the back side of the dangley dong that is Florida. Storms that hit the East coast of the state generally lose power before making it there. Those that come up via the Gulf of Mexico mostly come ashore from Texas to the Florida panhandle. A storm would have to make a hard right to hit Tampa full on.
I'm guessing the Mayor Buckhorn (if that IS his real name) just wanted to get some of that sweet, sweet media attention.
Oh, and there is some proof, too. The very wonderful Historical Hurricane Tracks tool at NOAA. Only 5 hurricanes have gone within 25 miles of Tampa in the last 100 years.
Oh, however to @8's snark, only one hurricane has gone within 25 miles of Charlotte in the past 100 years (albeit, it was Hugo).
1. presidential conventions always occur during hurrican season.
2. very few cites can handle presidential conventions.
3. the cities not susceptible to hurricanes (MPLS, Denver) and acceptable to the GOP (not Seattle, Portland, SF, Oakland) got used up last time.
If it is any consolation, FEMA has been planning for the possibility of a hurricane (among other events) at the conventions for over a year, along with the state emergency management agencies. They are ready for whatever happens.
We are frequently spared, but we've come awfully close. Charley in '04 was supposed to be our storm and hit us with a cat 2, but just a little wobble caused it to hit Port Charlotte at a cat 4.
I don't live in a flood zone, so I'll be fine. (I also checked to make sure my insurance was up to date.) The convention center? That's in Zone A, so they would evacuate in the case of a cat 1 coming anywhere nearby. I was not looking forward to the RNC at all, but with a storm coming? This should be awesome.

Bygones.
If nothing happens, it will be "proof" that god loves them and blesses their oppression of others.
If a hurricane destroys the venue, it will be "proof" that they are not oppressing others enough, and that makes god really angry.

"So if a hurricane causes a lot of damage in Tampa during the GOP national convention, that would mean…."
… that the GOP has not gone sufficiently far in punishing sluts, perverts, and heathens.
Of course, if a hurricane hit the Democrats, it would be a clear indication that they are sinners.
Do try to keep up. This sort of circular logic is not new. It's standard fare among the God-botherers.
