It's funny that the one person who is defending Akin's right to stay in the race is his opponent, Claire McCaskill. She knows an easy mark when she sees one.
@3: In no context does his comment make sense. None. His entire little speech makes it very clear he wasn't talking about women who claim to be raped but actually weren't. He's attempting to talk about FORCIBLE rape, as though it's not rape if no one holds a gun to your head, but even in that context he's full of shit.
Of course they're insincere! Everybody knows that (I hope). They're just looking at their odds of capturing the Senate and White House and overturning the ACA, Dodd-Frank, etc. Everything that would increase the profit margins of the people (and corporate "people") who gave them their jobs. Akin wants to hang on because a.) he's a typical obstinate, immature conservative blowhard, and b.) he's looking after himself and his career.
The speed and force of the Republican repudiation has surprised me, though, I'll admit. It suggests that they see real danger in this whole affair.
But no. They don't give a single damn about women or anybody who doesn't contribute tens of thousands to them.
Not only the Republicans think a woman should die instead of a fetus, but a year or so ago, a Catholic hospital fired its female administrator because she authorized an emergency late-term abortion to save the mother who would otherwise have died. And I think she was excommunicated by the Church, also.
And naysayers claim rape jokes are never funny. Ha!
What I'd really like is a SLOG post about "false rape" in its true definition of a false allegation of rape.
In that context his original comment makes sense.
