McKenna is the recognizable name, so I'm guessing that's why he's popular with people who don't know any better, and don't want to know any better, because gubernatorial politics is a super boring subject to punk kids better entertained by shoplifting and breakdancing and playing hackey sack and other youth-oriented pasttimes.

Not everyone is a rabid idealogue Goldensteinenberg.
3
Voters are stupid, period.

They frequently hold self-contradictory and illogical positions, and they elect candidates/vote on referendumbs accordingly.
4
So what does that stay about older voters who voted for McCain and Bush Jr in much higher numbers than young voters? Or that they refuse to support sensible policies like marijuana legalization or gay marriage in large numbers like young people? Even stupider, I guess. Another thing that's stupid - trying to read much into a four point margin on a sub sample of voters where the MoE is larger than four points. Shame on you, Goldy.
5
The re-emergence of that picture made me ugly-laugh involuntarily. I hope you're happy!!
6
Goldy, don't let the young people hear you say that. It might damage their self-esteem, and they'd have to tell their parents on you.
7
In terms of name recognition, they probably think the pollsters are asking about his daughter.

Is Jay Inslee even running a campaign? Serious question, where IS he? I imagine a lot of young voters have no idea who Jay Inslee is. People are treating the Governor's race like its McKenna vs. Gregoire and the public consciousness decided it was against Gregoire forever three years ago. Rob McKenna is at least getting his name and face out there. He was at the Sonics rally and got cheers (because everyone got cheers); why did he beat out Inslee for being there for those 6,000 people?

Regardless, 41-37 isn't exactly a strong sign for victory; what #4 said.
9
When is Inslee going to grow a pair and start taking it to McKenna defining him as the tea-bag loving far right whacko that his is? The smile for the camera campaign of Inslee has got me pissed.
10
Partly a problem of ignorant young people that don't care about politics and vote on recognition-Mckenna has been much more on display than Inslee-and a product of a lame candidate in Inslee that has failed to sharpen the differences between himself and his opponent; hell, even Inslee won't support marijuana legalization, which would probably help him with the youth demographic.

To many moderates, Islee just seems like Gregoire 2.0 with pants, and while Mckenna smells like a retrobate republican to those who really pay attention to politics, he's been effective at marketing himself as a new and improved product of sorts and that positioning has gone over well with moderates and independents who don't want a repeat of business as usual.

I'm going to assume that "stupidity" is shorthand here for "a quite reasonable dislike for Chris Gregoire based on her lack of charisma, gross mishandling of state budgetary issues, and lack of party leadership leading to a short-sighted, emotionally-driven decision to voting Republican 'just to shake things up in Olympia'" Because that is a plausible thing that could happen among younger, more Independent-identified voters.

But don't be ageist, you hoary old fuck. Inexperience and stupidity are not the same thing.

This could also be due to the fact that a career representative like Jay Inslee, decent man though he may be, fails to excite younger, less level-headed liberals, while McKenna's unpredictable, angry quasi-Objectivism (along with a ton of spillover from national-level conservative campaigning) is turning out the naive, extremist young conservatives who, like, read this AMAZING book called The Fountainhead and it just totally changed the way they think about all the bullshit in the world.

@11 Yes.

I don't currently live in Washington so I haven't been keeping up with politics there. Out of curiosity I went to check out Rob McKenna's webpage to find out what party he belonged to. Guess what - it isn't mentioned ANYWHERE on the main page or any of the several subpages I clicked on. I had to go to wikipedia to find out he's a Republican. Maybe that's part of his strategy to get the younger votes.
14
@ 9 Are you kidding me, McKenna while not a moderate is not a right wing tea partier. He is a conservative Republican who is partially has support due to the fact that some people think we need change after 30 years of one party in power. No party holds power forever after all. Not everyone is a Stranger reader and if Inlsee tries the strategy you are suggesting he will lose for sure. He has gone from 6 pts down to 2 pts down and we still got 5 months to go. He is getting it done.
15
Inslee isn't getting anything done, with anyone. If even those of us who wouldn't vote for McKenna if our children were held hostage don't like Inslee's campaign, that's pretty depressing.

But yes, young people are stupid. Inexperience plus willful ignorance equals operational stupidity.
16
I'm guessing it's name recognition and college republicans. Younger progressive types who don't actually follow politics will have no idea who Inslee is, and it's just the Governorship which is weird and foreign and all special interests anyway so go with the guy who's been in state gov already.
17
Also your mom is stupid.
18
All I got from this post is that if you don't like my candidate then you're stupid.

How old are you again Goldy?
19
stupid is as stupid does. let's wait and see how the election plays out before naming names.
20
Inslee needs to hit the interwebs hard. And not just email. I get a lot of Inslee email. Who reads that? He needs a social media expert. Eye-catching videos and trenchant, shareable images.
21
This post is spot on! I mean, thank GOD we have old people around to support the liberal agenda at the polls... right?

As the old folks say, "Git yer guv ment hands off my medicaid!"
22
Instead of calling them stupid, you should call it an opportunity for the Inslee campaign. If he can manage to get the word out about McKenna's positions on these things, he can shore up support with young voters.

Please wait...
