Perhaps that is evidence she should be committed to an asylum...

People with different imaginary friends don't get off that easy.
2
If God inspired her to threaten someone, God will deliver her from prison. He takes care of His prophets, one of which Dillard is certainly not.
3
"Divinely inspired."

Lady, I do not think that word means what you think it means.
4
I'm all for allowing this defense, actually, so long as God can testify in court as to his role in the alleged crime.
5
If she has voices in her head telling her to commit violent crime, she needs medication.
6
She needs a good drone strike right on the head.
7
"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence"
8
@4 - So we subpoena God to testify, and when he doesn't show up, a judge issues an arrest warrant? I like it.
9
Since she is the one suing, she has to prove that god did indeed instruct her to do what she did.

Also, courts tend to not like it when you tell them that you are above their laws and jurisdictional power.

Good luck, you delusional scumbag!

10
Must've been the Old Testament God. He was always ordering people killed.
11
@8 - Sounds like the premise for a heart warming movie. Miracle on 34th St 2, maybe. God shows up in the courtroom to get everyone into the spirit of murder.

Can the White House provide Abortion Providers in Kansas with some sort of protection from these bible thumping terrorists? Homeland Security? The National Guard?

If she were a brown skinned middle easterner, she would be in Guantanamo by now.
13
Should the court actually buy into this, the fallout could be interesting. In the trial following the death of Anneliese Michel in Germany in the 70s, the case on which "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" is loosely based on, the court in its verdict essentially said that belief in the personal existence of the devil justifies a more lenient sentence, as it verges on insanity. Needless to say, people in the church were pissed, even though this let the priest get away with probation....
14
You know who was truly divinely inspired? Thomas Kinkade. His soft, sun-dappled landscapes were worn smooth and comfortable by the warm caress of God's own hand.

You, ma'am, are no Painter of Light.
15
@12, Exactly. Countless billions spent half a world away yet little for the terrorists in our own country.
16
Aspirations of terrorism borne of "divine inspiration"...gee, where have we heard that before? Wait: haven't we bombed large swaths of entire countries in an effort to hunt down people of similar motivations?

The problem with believing in mythical magical beings is that it's up to the believer's imagination to "hear" what the being wants the believer to do. While such a defense is unlikely to hold up in court, it holds up in the believer's mind. Let's face it. It's not like God and/or Jesus are going to actually appear (it's about as likely as leprechauns or fairies appearing) to make clear their intentions.

"The voices in my head said that God wanted me to eat that Twinkie, which caused my blood sugar to spike, rendering me temporarily incapable of making sane decisions, which is when I decided to try to kill that man. Clearly I am not responsible."

And that, class, is how we got the legendary Schizo-God-Twinkie defense.
19
@2 He takes cares of his prophets? Really? Do you have proof that he's actually done that in the past, or are you once again just taking on faith the fables of your elders?
20
If an "act of God" is sufficient to allow an insurance company to welsh out of paying when your house is destroyed by a tornado, this doesn't seem like that much more of a stretch...

God Angrily Clarifies 'Don't Kill' Rule
"Somehow, people keep coming up with the idea that I want them to kill their neighbor. Well, I don't. And to be honest, I'm really getting sick and tired of it. Get it straight. Not only do I not want anybody to kill anyone, but I specifically commanded you not to, in really simple terms that anybody ought to be able to understand."

@19: The prophets of Judaism are known only through the old stories, as that is the only recorded history of them. There have been none for quite some time.
I don't quite see why you are being so suddenly hostile. My claim is that God will not defend this woman for her actions, because the message came from her and not from God.
23
Let's call it the "Lafferty defense."
24
22

That's what happens when you kill your Messiah.
25
@24: If Jesus was the Messiah, why were the Romans able to kill him? If God protects His prophets, surely nobody would be allowed to strike against the Messiah.
Riddle me that, christfag.
26
25
the Romans did not kill him.
He gave His life.
actually your prophets foretold in great detail the events of his birth, life and the events surrounding His crucifixion- (have you ever enjoyed Handel's 'Messiah'?)
but many Jews of His day made the same mistake you do, looking beyond the mark.
even His followers had a hard time understanding.

He, after His Resurrection, walked with two disciples from Jerusalem to Emmaus.
His identity was unknown to them as they walked, they were discussing the terrible events of the week.

"And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?
"And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?
"And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:
"And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him."

"But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.
"Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;
"And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive

"And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said."

"Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:

"Ought not The Messiah to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

"AND BEGINNING AT MOSES AND ALL THE PROPHETS, HE EXPOUNDED UNTO THEM IN ALL THE SCRIPTURES THE THINGS CONCERNING HIMSELF."

"And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.
"But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.
"And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.
"And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight."

"AND THEY SAID ONE TO ANOTHER, DID NOT OUR HEART BURN WITHIN US, WHILE HE TALKED WITH US BY THE WAY, AND WHILE HE OPENED TO US THE SCRIPTURES?"

27
Wouldn't this make god an accomplice? Actually, he's the one calling the shots so shouldn't he be tried for leading a terrorist organization or maybe for ordering a hit? I say issue a warrant for the arrest of this "god" person.

Please wait...
