Goldy- who's running for his seat as an R? This week showed a number of Tea Party challenges to sitting Republicans (LD-5 on the Eastside to punish Sen. Pflug for her marriage vote, for instance) and maybe he just didn't want to have to face a vigorous primary challenge...

#1 - The complete list of who has filed in Washington can be found at http://www.sos.wa.gov/elections/Candidat…

The list preliminary, and will not be official until Tuesday morning (May 22.)

#1 -- Ann Rivers, one of the current 18th LD state reps will replace Zarelli. I wound't put her in the Tea Party camp, more of a "keep your hands off my stack Jack" Republican.
4
My bet is he is banking a McKenna win and emerges as the next head of the Office of Financial Management which helps "Prepare the executive budget proposal and monitor budget implementation."
5
@2: Thx. I stand corrected. The D is running unopposed. Wow.
6
Goldensteinberg must be worried his baby mama's checks will dry up.
7
@3: Rivers didn't file.
8
I think I would agree with #4

@4&@8: I dunno. R's don't just give up safe seats. And quitting your way to success is unorthodox (see Palin, Sarah.)

Goldy, do you still see the R's netting seats this election? I only know one seriously threatened D senate seat, which now gets offset by this.

Sex scandal or criminal investigation into financial misconduct or something with his family (not an illness) that he doesn't want to get out.

Apologies for asking about a federal pol in a state thread, but what is the deal with Rep. Adam Smith from the 9th? He's cosponsoring a bill that would "essentially neutralize two previous acts—the Smith-Mundt Act of 1948 and Foreign Relations Authorization Act in 1987—that had been passed to protect U.S. audiences from our own government’s misinformation campaigns.".

Still familiarizing myself with state politics here, what's his story?

@11 after writing The Wealth of Nations, Smith time traveled to 1997 where he became a pro-military moderate Democrat. Sadly he no longer can use a wig to hide his baldness.
13
@12 So it is a time traveling anomaly that removed enlightened from "Capitalism is enlightened self interest"? All this time I thought it was just narcissistic sociopaths that got us into this mess, now I find out it's Science!

Must be the same anomaly that changed the meaning of Moderate as well.
14
@13 you could call it science, but over there they call it another Friday night in Scotland. Shit gets pretty wild in the peat bogs and whiskey stills.
Smith couldn't travel back to prevent the unraveling of the utopia he helped create. But at least he makes up for it in the state of Washington. Plus as I recall, his spot on Colbert's better know a district was pretty funny.
15
@14 Aye, I know it wellll. The archaic act of the military use of the kilt (Finding the hung over in battle, then blinding them with the glare of the flash). I'm still hard pressed to understand why I need another cup of agitprop with my daily wheaties? I've already reached my quota for this century, why the need to legalize more?

I don't think we can fully trust the SoS candidate list. I hope it's true that Zarelli screwed his party by forgetting to tell them that he'd decided not to run, but...

According to the SoS website as of Saturday evening, Zack Hudgins isn't running for re-election to the House from the 11th District, and Gerry Pollet is running unopposed for the House in the 46th.

King County Elections displays both Hudgins and Sylvester Cann (Pollet's opponent) as candidates. Which they are.

So it's possible that the SoS missed listing the Republican in the Senate race in the 18th as well.
17
The SoS list is NOT official. Won't be until Tuesday. There is a Republican running for Zarelli's seat, and they'll hold it.
18
This is really odd. Zarelli seemed headed for high office. Is there a back story? What is his relationship to MKenna?
19
Who's Josh Feit going to blow now?
20
Zarelli's the one that got busted with cocaine in a traffic stop in Edmonds in the 80's, them claimed that Edmonds PD somehow framed him because they like to beat up Italians. McKenna is pretty ruthless. You think he wants that guy put out front next session fighting for drug testing for welfare recipients or some other similar GOP idea?

Please wait...
