Talk about living the Occupy stereotype of useless, spoiled, privileged white kids too lazy to get a real job:

"According to his Facebook page, Campiche studied "poetry therapies" at The Evergreen State College. He has six drug convictions in Thurston County, Kato heard. For the past six years he has been employed at his father's downtown Seattle law firm."

So we have inmates caring for cats, training dog, staying home to care for their kids. What's wrong with our prison system these days?!?

Setting snarky aside, though, I do wonder if there are studies that show an improvement in re-offend rates and prison health when inmates are allowed to nurture. I can't wait to see the long-term results of FOSA or of the animal care programs.

So let's see- it's a justifiable form of protest to smash windows but you shouldn't be arrested for it? My guess is these boneheads will object to paying for them as well. Boofuckinghoo!

Word on the street is that Dan Savage has been challenged to a NOM "debate" with Brian Brown. Surely Dan cannot let such a challenge go unanswered, especially after the failure of our local bigots to follow through on a debate.

DO IT, DAN!

The video of the woman being pulled by her hair by a female police office is awful. (you can see it here:http://youtu.be/EMH-sZoR0jg)

I couldn't hear anything the woman said to encourage such a response from the officer and the guy holding the camera is standing right behind/next to her (the woman arrested looks about 5' tall). You can see that nothing is in her hands but her handbag when she's dragged over the police bike line. It's a good shot of what happened until she's yanked over the bikes by her hair. This is when SPD does what it does best and forces the camera man beyond the line of sight, protecting it's own violent and illegal acts.

Even if she said "fuck off, we're moving" (again I didn't hear it), this woman was past the police officer when the officer decided go ape shit and grab the back of her hair.

That female police officer should be fired, immediately. The SPD is the worst police department in any major (or minor) city I've ever lived. It's fucking deplorable.

The Stranger reporting on OWS is totally in the tank for the status quo against OWS here.

You imply that the linked writer is somehow justifying those who committed violence, when the opposite is true. The writer is objecting to police using the violence of the "black bloc" (ie undercover cop FBI-led goon squads) as a justification for mistreatment of the genuine peaceful protesters.

This is a low point for the Stranger, right up there with Dan Savage supporting the Iraq war, except here it is involving multiple reporters. Sheesh, is even one of you going to ask why there has never been a large scale conspiracy to commit terrorism bust and trial for a "black bloc" type group? You snear at silly protestors saying silly things but then you say the opposite and support the idea that the organizing people in these "black bloc" groups are intelligent beyond all measure, impervious to infiltration or investigation.

Why don't you go find someone who was around in the 60s and early 70s and participated in any left or civil rights political activism, or at least open up Wikipedia and read the about COINTELPRO. Gosh.

P.S. With the growing income disparity, the right wing and corporate American have literally hundreds of times more money to use to influence the direction of law enforcement initiatives than they had in the 60s or 70s. Yet supposedly critical independent media reporters are most thrilled when they get a byline in the NYT.

Thanks for calling bullshit on the "media smear campaign," Cienna. Perhaps Paul Campiche should have known that his arrest would be public record since his father Jeff Campiche is a named partner in Campiche Blue Arnold, a prominent personal injury practice, and his mother is an attorney for Goldberg & Jones (1-800-DIVORCE). And while young master Paul is not an attorney himself, you might think he would have picked up a couple of pointers working as a secretary for his daddy's firm.

Of course it couldn't possibly have been young Paul throwing bottles and smashing windows, since his mother testified that he is critically ill and had two recent spinal surgeries.

But I'm sure mommy and daddy will make sure that Paul ends up in the 1% anyways.

Because as you know yourself, there's no "group" there. There's a bunch of douchenozzle kidz who like to dress up in black and smash shit as a way of feeling bad-ass "wicked legit" and also working out issues they have with growing up white (in the case of Master Camiche, upper) middle-class. It's a frat party, not a movement.

wish seattle had a "Mugs in the News" section like the Chicago Trib.
11
ROBYN! I couldn't love her any more.

@10, my understanding is that unlike names of who's arrested and what for, our Supreme Court has ruled that mug shots are considered part of the criminal investigation, which records are exempt from public disclosure. Every now and then a bill floats in the legislature to change it, but that darn ACLU keeps winning the day, arguing that releasing mug shots brands people as criminals who are later found not guilty, and that for the guilty, mug shots are a form of extralegal punishment beyond whatever sentence the accused may receive. So the bills keep going nowhere, which reassures me very much.

Please. Are vandals routinely featured on the Mayor's page? Are their images splashed all over the news in an attempt to get a manhunt going? Gimme a break. This is clearly going out of the way to expose these folks to scrutiny. Nice glossing over each and every single other point I made as well.

Thanks for the shout out, though, Cienna. :)

#12 I can see your point on a wrongful arrest. Personally, I do not think a little public shaming for the convicted is a bad thing. It certainly can be quite entertaining. And cathartic. Even useful to these young crusaders if they learned how to focus their energy on building public support...

This Robyn video is my favorite too. She looks totally possessed.

Robyn rocks.

Loved the end scene in Girls this week.

God, Cienna, you should never cover anything OWS since you have absolutely no objectivity (or reading comprehension skills for that matter -- did you even read the OWS editorial you linked to and misrepresented?) What a hack.
20
@14, I don't have time to address every point you made--and I don't disagree with all of your points. In fact, I linked to your article because I think you do make some good points and I believe in holding police accountable for how they treat citizens--as any cursory look at my article archives proves.

However, I chose to address the two points that I believe made your editorial less credible: That there's some sort of conspiracy to malign all the people arrested, which I don't think you've proven, and that the "black bloc" is now the victim of a media campaign when common sense suggests that their actions were timed to get the most media attention possible.
21
@14, furthermore, and this is just friendly advice, if you want to write critical pieces and expect them to be taken seriously, you have to be ready to handle criticism.
22
I do wonder if there are studies that show an improvement in re-offend rates and prison health when inmates are allowed to nurture.

Probably. It definitely works for at-risk children.
23
@21 Cienna! Of course I agree! And when I feel that you are mistaken in calling me a whiner, I will be happy to respond. :D And I sincerely meant the thank you. :) I don't think you're a hack, unlike others have stated.
24
@21, though I am curious where I said a goldurn thing about the black bloc... ;)
25
@24 That is the point, isn't it. You didn't say anything about the 'black bloc' but she has an article to write to support the dominant narrative so she doesn't care. That is one kind of hack.

Please wait...
