We have good libraries and bookstores, we have too much to do to spend much of our time reading, and we all have smart phones. I'll never buy a reader. I love reading on my iPhone, and it's always with me.

I take my Kindle e-Ink $79 reader with me everywhere around Puget Sound.
Universally:
1) I am the only one doing so in any venue I attend.
2) People stare at me.
3) One person asked me why I had such a "huge cell phone, mister".
4) One very nice person at Ristrettos talked to me at length about it and said she was a voracious reader. She did not own one, but thought she might.
By the way, other than in Starbucks there are also lots of places that I take my netbook where there is Wifi...and yet, I often see no other people doing so!
They're really crappy devices. I prefer my phone, which also plays playstation games. When you can get playstation on a Kindle I'll look impressed before laughing at you for buying such a locked down product.
