This is an attempt to be charitable to an opponent, not to assume bad faith or at least not the worst. It's a good exercise, and it helps keep one from living in an echo chamber, but it can't cover the distinct smell of Mosselmänner heraus! in it.

Note that I believe that his take on freedom of religion---the freedom of a particular religion to set public policy on the basis of its faith-claims---would probably make Jefferson vomit, and (more importantly) me as well.

Greenwell Springs Baptist Church is one of the most hate-filled of the many hate-filled churches here in Baton Rouge. And his diatribe about not being able to say those things in this country...he's in Louisiana! The freaking governor says them in news conferences!

But just so you don't think the whole town is this way...the Interfaith Federation of Greater Baton Rouge includes most of the mainline Protestant and Catholic churches in town (none of the Southern Baptist Churches have opted to join), the two synagogues, the mosqe, a Hindu temple, a Buddhist temple, the MCC church, and a secular humanist group at LSU.

Setting aside the technical errors in his comparative theology, if this guy is saying that Americans are not Buddhists, Moslems, Jews, members of any of dozens of other faiths, or atheists, then he is just factually wrong. There are non-Christian citizens of this country. Since I suspect he is aware of the fact that a number of American citizens are not Christians, I can only conclude that he is saying that non-Christians are not true Americans. That's an interesting idea - the division of citizens between technical Americans and true Americans. Of course, I could make a stronger case for the idea that anyone who doesn't believe in freedom of religion isn't a true American, so that would eliminate him from the national identity instead of most of those that he would exclude. Ironic, isn't it?

I'm going to skip over the whole part about abortion because I couldn't make much sense of it.

Why don't they show his introduction of Santorum? It's edited at several points, why couldn't they tack on the introduction, just to show that he did have some sort of tacit approval of the campaign? They just show Santorum at the end, standing (could be anywhere) and clapping like he's kind of bored. Not showing the introduction makes me question whether that's really what this is (instead of maybe some crazy rally Santorum wandered into unaware, which could happen to anyone on the campaign trail). I don't know why they couldn't make the association explicit.

I also agree with @7. This is a pet peeve of mine because I was raised as an evangelical but converted to mystical Judaism in my 30's. When I did I discovered all the stuff fundamentalist Christians think about Jews and the "Old Testament" are wrong from a Jewish standpoint.

Rev White starts out saying that they believe in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, but then says that God is Jesus. Last time I checked the Torah, Hashem (Adonai - God) is never once called Jesus or any version of that name. Hashem has several names in the Torah - just a few are Adonai (Lord), El Shaddai (the One who says enough), Elohim (the judgmental aspect of Hashem), and the actual name of Hashem, Yud-Hei-Vov-Hei, which was only pronounced by the High Priest on Yom Kippur and which is commonly misread as "Yahweh", even though there is no "w" sound in Hebrew. (Mystical tradition teaches that this name is unpronouncable and is actually the sound of one's breath.)

The Ten Commandments (which Christians are so hot to adopt) says that you shall not worship any other gods (or other things or beings) before Hashem, so in my view, anybody who claims to worship the Hebrew God, but then says they also worship Jesus is breaking that commandment. They are idolitars. Either you worship the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob as laid out in the Torah, or you worship Jesus. They are NOT the same.

(Sorry, but I get a bit pissed about this only because I was taught so many wrong things about Jews and their beliefs. I find Christianity's supposed adoption of the Jewish texts and then their rejection of 98% of what is taught in it to be incredibly hypocritical.
