Whoever put him in those Dad jeans should be shot. Ugh.
2
Great piece, Paul.

Boy, the caucuses are going to be FUN.
3
I saw my first campaign commercial on ESPN this morning. Oddly enough, it was a negative campaign ad against Santorum sponsored by Newt Gingrich. Had a clip from Santorum talking about how proud he was about all the earmarks that he had secured.

taking america in a direction republicans don't recognize: towards reality.

Boy, what a misrepresentation of the rally! I was there this morning and it was NOTHING like what is described here. Well, I should say yes it was like what is described here if you were going to an event and all you were looking for was every little thing possible that you could dislike or make fun of. The crowd waiting in line was VERY pleasant, I saw no cutting and everyone was quite polite. I saw absolutely no complaining whatsoever and when the vip's walked by everyone moved over, smiled and said nice things. Mitt Romney was very warm and cordial. But it's all about what you are looking for when you report something. If I went to any presidential rally I could slant it almost any way I saw fit. It's obvious Paul Constant is not a Romney fan, and it's sad that he can only see the negative that he wants to see.

@5, @6, your credibility is destroyed by the fact that you went to a Romney rally voluntarily.

This handshake business reminds me of a story I read about George W. Bush and some naive, impressionable young things interning at some Jesus Camp thingie in DC, manning phone banks or whatever. These kids had been indoctrinated into the Gospel of George W., and genuinely believed him to be a divinely inspired Messenger of God, bringing the Word from his ranch in Texas to a nation thirsting for the Lord. But when they met him, one of the kids was utterly shocked to discover that her idol didn't have the horned hands of a rancher, but the smooth, buttery hands of a scion of one of Kennebunkport's wealthiest families. She was completely freaked out by it.

I don't know what happened to her, but I assume she's a toothless meth addict giving $4 blowjobs in Jacksonville now.

Any word on what he thinks of the height of our trees?
9
Seeing as how cake joined Slog the instant this article was published, anyone want to make any bets about their IP address? Romney HQ? Local GOP offices? Seattle Times editorial board?
10
@5/6 - Can you say "obvious paid concern troll?"
11
"There were so many centers of the universe in line that the entire galaxy should have collapsed in on Bellevue under the strain."

brilliant
12
@5 "If I went to any presidential rally I could slant it almost any way I saw fit."
And lo, you went go to a presidential rally and tried to slant it.

Constant can be juvenile and hyperbolic, but he doesn't pretend to be unbiased. Yet his critiques of Romney are much the same ones that are being made by conservatives: that Romney is desperately polished on the surface but has no real connection to the voters or their issues. His critique of the crowd is new, but I'm sure that he heard what he heard and saw what he saw: he has pictures at least.
13
He's so 1%. But he can't remake Bellevue into Seattle and get away with it, the bastard. I got your Seattle welcome, right here, pal!
14
"See, they don't want this rich guy in office, but they don't realize this rich guy knows how to make America rich!"

And there you have it - Bellevue Conservatism in a nutshell: I will vote for any person and support any policy position that ultimately will allow ME to accummulate as much wealth as I can, and I will do so with zero regard for any other living being.
15
Here's a take on Romney from a(n ex-)Mormon perspective:

16
What does the "college friends" remark refer to? Is this yet another manufactured Obama conspiracy theory that I've somehow missed?
17
I am personally offended!!!! I was looking for photos of the Romney rally, because we are in the front row and I knew we would be in a number of photos, which brought me to this site. I read this article really misconstruing the rally and had to join and reply. So, no, I am not from Romney HQ, good try though!
18
@17: so you admit, then, that you ARE from the Wa State Republican Party HQ?
19
@1, those like Eddie Bauer jeans - very appropriate.

@5, I don't want to deny you the right to earn a living, but why don't you take the astroturf elsewhere, and remember that Mitt loves firing people.
20
Yes, kind of like saying "Great LA welcome" when you're in Burbank. How embarrassing!
21
Does anyone else here think Romney's wearing a diaper? I can actually see where he might, being on the campaign trail and all. But you you would think they'd put him in a more flattering pair of pants, to hide his corrective undergarments.
22
@16 - Ah, it was some conspiracy that Trump or Limbaugh was trying to peddle. Something about nobody "remembering" him from high school or college?
23
@7, you really couldn't manage to make your first point without the sexist, classist comment tacked on?
24
Welcome to Slog, @cake! We look forward to years of thoughtful commentary, now that you have joined our community.
25
@16: What @22 said: There's a branch of birthers who say that nobody remembers going to college with Barack Obama until he suddenly showed up at Harvard. I think the theory is that Obama was raised in a mosque by Bill Ayers and Saul Alinsky until he turned 22 and then they released him into the world under an alias via a conspiracy that involved Harvard's admissions board, which then launched him on the very obvious path to the White House. Because Democrats are great at planning things.
26
@21 You would think with Romney's fortune his staff could find a pair of jeans that fit him properly and yet give off the proper "I'm one of you - a normal person" sort of vibe.
27
@25 we'll see in a few days when they release that video footage of obama in college they uncovered! :)
28
@ Jenny, Paul: Ah, okay. I do dimly recall reading or hearing about some such bullshit along those lines. Thanks.
29
There were easily 500 people in a room with a posted capacity of 250. If he'll violate the Fire Code to get elected, what other laws are he willing to break?
30
@24 Are you being flippant? Sincere? It's hard to tell. I love that someone above figured out that cake just signed up but I can't decide whether cake is for real or a Romney operative. I hope he or she is for real, because we really could use more discussion like this around Slog. But wouldn't it also be cool if cake really was a Romney plant? I liked your piece very much, btw. It was like the article you wrote about rallies in Iowa. There is nothing at all like these in more traditional media that I follow. Thoughtful lefty perspectives on events--and Charles's increasingly decent posts--are why I read Slog. Keep up the good work.
31
EGAD
! I forgot about the caucuses! Thanks

Think it was about four years ago about nowthat Obama went after Hillary accusing her of being a racist.

Then of course he appoints her as ambassador to get her the H out of town.
32
May this con-artist suffer the same fate as the founder of his fraudulent cult, Joseph Smith.
33

TARGET

When you think of Romney think of how Bain capital created Target.

All the jobs, careers, futures he created.

34
Priebus,

Is this REALLY the best candidate?

I think the clown in office may do better.
35
As the rest of the world is portrayed as demons By our media I have to wonder what what the demons think about the republican jokefulls
36
The media of the demons don't give them hourly updates on the republican hopefuls. French media calles Romney a moderate republican, but without caring to explain what his program might be, and how he could be more moderate than other republican candidates. In short, the demons don't care much at this point.

This particular demon hopes that Obama wins. And hopes that there may appear statesmen that are more like him, in the demon's own country.

The last time the demons were really interested is when Bush was reelected. Everyone hoped against. When Obama was elected, it was more of a "what an incredible surprise, they elected someone with an actual brain !"

Please wait...

and remember to be decent to everyone
all of the time.
