Are you kidding me? This is fucking awesome. The trust fund baby Romney is going to get utterly bruised and bloodied by the schoolyard bully Gingrich to the point that Obama will be able to wipe the floor with him in the general.

Added bonus: The exposure of the GOP to moderates as nothing more than a bunch of whining, ineffectual momma's boys is going to kill them down ticket as well.

Meanwhile, I'm putting a significant buy into popcorn futures.

1. Obama, don't think this means you can have an affair now.

2. Gingrich courting Palin = Gingrich shopping for wife #4--probably has his sights set on Bristol.

SC didn't care about John McCain when he won in 2008. As Ross Perot put it, "‘McCain is the classic opportunist. He’s always reaching for attention and glory,’ he said.
‘After he came home, Carol walked with a limp. So he threw her over for a poster girl with big money from Arizona. And the rest is history.’

We must respect the process that the republicans are going through. If this means they must spend $$ and expose each other’s dirty secrets well that’s just the process they need.

Let Gingrich do the dirty work here. He is good at it and clearly enjoys it.

I think I’ll buy some red vines before the next debate.
6
I think Newt's best game is to be a mean nasty ahole.

That's who the conservatives want to see on stage debating Obama. It'll invigorate them.

@ 5 speaking of money .. yesterday we got a robo call from gingrich ( don't laugh a lot of us old people do just fine with land lines and old timey answering machines..we do just
fine ).now normally i would be , like, all wtf medi-evil jumping across the room trying to get on a 'do not the fuck call me with this shit list' but the husband hadn't heard that 'obama food stamp president blah blah..' sound bite. so i let it go.
he thought it was a joke or something, but the voice told us to dig in our wallets or somesuchthnig , then the answering machine cut it off. now,if these children want to continue spending their hard stolen money calling an broke african american sodomite to their shrinking tent..well..i'll just let em.

"So, let me get this straight. South Carolina, a hotbed of Republican conservatism, is about to nominate a serial adulterer Freddie Mac lobbyist for president?"

Or, perhaps, South Carolina, the hotbed of politicized right-wing Christianity, is going to nominate a member of a mainstream Christian denomination who has publicly repented a heterosexual sin over a member of a denomination most of them don't see as Christian at all.

After all, even though he's nominally Catholic, Gingrich has married up, both in money and trophy-wife status. That's far more forgivable (in a Republican) than being a creepy heretic.
9
@7 That cracked me up. Don't go changin'!
10
South Carolina is the damn near the meanest state in the union, and Gingrich is the meanest candidate left in the race. That's all there is to it.

All SC (and Arizona) GOP voters are looking for is who is the fuck-you meanest, torturingest, eat-the-poor motherfucker in the room. That's Gingrich right now. Bank on it.

You've got to be joking. A protracted battle is great for the Dems. It means the Republicans will be pouring money into the presidential primaries, leaving less for candidates running for lower offices. Once Romney finally secures the nomination he will be badly damaged because we all know that Newt will use EVERY dirty trick in the book to bring Mitt down.

Eventually Romney will have to release his tax records which will raise huge concerns among evangelicals when they see how much he is giving to the Mormon church. The rest of the country will be put off by just how much freaking money Mitt made as a venture capitalist gutting companies and sending jobs overseas.

Once the general election rolls around, there is a strong possibility that, in a effort to achieve their goal of a one-term Obama presidency, the Obama haters will waste their funding at the top of the ticket, giving Democrats a slightly better chance of holding onto the Senate and reasonable shot of taking back the House. This is a good thing, Goldy!
12
@8 That's the clearest assessment I've read yet.

I think Newt actually might get the nomination. I think the average republican, though loath to admit it, are sheepishly comming to terms with nominating pure "would have a beer with" types in the past.

Deep down they know Obama is wicked smart. War Hero didn't work against him. Pretty tits didn't work against him. Crazy religion didn't work against him. So they're putting in thier nerd-- pulling him off the JV bench -- and hoping nerd against nerd will work.

Problem is Newt is a poseur. Just like 90% of modern neocons. They think because he read a book by Alvin Tofler that he's a big brain. But he's not. He's just vicious.

And THAT might work in the general anyway. Becuase people are pissed and want a stand in who be vicious to whoever is in power. And Obama is incapable of viciousness.

I think Newt could win.
13
The more people see Romney, the less they like him. Give him all the free press possible.
14
The exit polling is kind of interesting. Most people who are voting for The Newt said that Romney was "too liberal." Gives you some idea how nuts they are.
15
@ 11, "A protracted battle is great for the Dems. It means the Republicans will be pouring money into the presidential primaries, leaving less for candidates running for lower offices."

Remember, the Dems had a "protracted battle" in 2008, and managed to win the White House anyway. I think they picked up seats in Congress, too.

Granted, the differences between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama were slighter than those between Romney, Santorum and Gingrich. And both Clinton and Obama had genuine rank-and-file support, while Romney's seems to be almost entirely with the GOP establishment. And we can't forget McCain's poor campaign, highlighted by his VP candidate and her incompetence in that role.

But 2008 has shattered any notion that a long, drawn out fight automatically helps the other side. And Obama will continue to be vulnerable as long as the economy keeps sucking. So let's be ready for a hard fight ourselves and not assume anything. (I believe that Republicans won't waste money on the presidential race if they think they've nominated a loser, which will make Congressional races, which may be even more important anyway, all that much harder.)
16
@ 14, that's the Deep South for you, especially in the states without Urban Archipelago islands.
17
Newt Gingrich, Definer and Protector of Civilization, Banger of Staff Member, Divorcer of Cancer Victim, Whistler of the Racist Dog. Godspeed my Friend.
18
That last line is a joke, right? That's not free media. It's millions of dollars worth of attack-ads against Romney. The longer this goes on, the lower the Republican turnout.
19
I don't think Gingrich is going to get the nomination, and I don't think that Gingrich thinks he's going to get the nomination. But the bigger he stands in the primary, the more money Fox is going to offer him as a "Special Correspondent" when this is over. And it will probably boost the fees he charges for his work as "historian," too.
20
I don't see the great and powerful middle going for Gingrich or the spoiled rich kid Romney with his money offshore. And the right won't like voting for a Mormon. And Santorum is too extreme. They have a congress with the lowest rating in history. That only makes things worse. It really looks like Republicans are self destructing.
21
I'd be a little more excited about the prospect of a Gingrich victory today if I actually thought he had a chance of winning the nomination. But I don't. Gingrich is an asshole.

You clearly have not been paying attention if you think being an asshole is a disqualifying trait in the GOP these days.

(A strong argument could be made the other way, actually)
22
Matt from D @15, The Republicans will dump, heap, shower, rain, and otherwise pour profusely, zillions upon kagillions of dollars on their candidate in their Godly ordained crusade to defeat the Kenyan colonialistic, Muslim, socialist, R & B singin' Obama.
23
Yes, Gingrich is a blowhard asshole. Romney, on the other hand, is an insufferable asshole. That's a pretty big difference.
24
Romney is a douche. Gingrich is a terrorist. Whis is exactly what the R Base wants.

Gingrich fits the infantile glibertarian bigots (base R voters) to a tee.

Gingrich may win the nom but he'll lose the general.

I think it was Axelrod who said Newt has trouble handing success. I expect the nastiest, most destructive campaign in history -- up and down the ballot.

Please wait...
