Past Due, sadly, I think the Bank of Italy (later BofA) started out as a legitimate, honorable business. I could be wrong, I don't know that much about its history.
Bank of Italy was indeed the progenitor of BofA, founded by A.P. Giannini, and he was no mobster - he was one of the first banker's to look out for the little guy, and he loaned money after the SF quake on a handshake. His history makes a good read, sounded like a pretty fair fellow. I was living in SF when that last of the Giannini's resigned from BofA, saying the bank had totally lost it's way from "AP"s principles
