"People like me are what stand between us and Auschwitz" - Newt Gingrich, Atlanta-Journal Constitution, 16 January, 1994.
2
this is more good news. this is who the republicans are. not the john huntsman bullshit i see people prattle on about. republicans are a nihilist/fascist alliance. that is who they will appoint. that is how they will govern.
3
I would be more worried if Gingrich had a chance in hell of winning the election.
4
This is a deeply stupid country, but stupid enough to vote for Newt? If Europe goes down the shitter and takes us with them I would not hold my breath.
5
Jesus shitcock. Fat old white men just cannot stop fighting the fucking Cold War, can they?

IT'S OVER, YOU ASSHOLES. Go masturbate in a decommissioned Nike silo and leave the rest of us out of your insane armageddon fantasies.
6
It's a weak comparison. For one thing, the USSR was a massive country with an equally massive military. Any conflict between us and them would likely have been the end of civilization--they could hurt us as badly as we could hurt them.

Radical Islam is not a state. It doesn't have a massive integrated military force. There is no way to establish a doctrine of "mutually assured destruction" (unless we're willing to go nuclear on putative allies). If an Islamic terrorist acquired and used a nuclear device, who would you strike? Pakistan? Saudi Arabia? That's where Salafist Islamic radicals come from.

Cold war thinking utterly failed after 9/11. The fact that the Newtster is still using this language shows he's hardly the man of ideas he claims to be.
7
"Cold war"?! Baby, the imminent next great war is going to be hot Hot HOT!
8
@6, while it is true in formal logic that "Cold War thinking utterly failed after 9/11," it would be more conventionally true to say that "Cold War thinking utterly failed after Eisenhower," at least by measures of success that do not exclusively include the rise of the personal fortunes of neoconservatives.
9
John Bolton? Fuck that shit.
10
@6- Oh you with your "reality-based policy making."
11
...Gingrich listing him as his leading choice for Secretary of State is incredibly frightening.

Luckily, it's also proof that Newt doesn't have the slightest intention of seriously running for president, and is just taking advantage of a historically weak GOP field and his own monumental narcissism to ensure that his name stays in the news cycle for a few more years, thus guaranteeing his place on the far right book publishing / guest lecturer / invited professor circlejerk/gravy-train.

"I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones."

--Albert Einstein.
13
Ah, don't worry too much. Newt's been on his best behavior but even a guy like Rich Lowry is expecting the "four horsemen" of Newt's bad behavior to catch up to him soon. Newt's ego will get the best of him for all the world to see.
14
I can't improve on Jeff Greenfield's tweet:

"What, was Yosemite Sam not available?"
15
Republicans claim government is a failure & when they get elected they do everything they can to make sure it is. Bolton would be perfect as SoS for President Gingrich. Not because he would be an effective voice for America or a force for world good but because he would be a disaster.
17
I have to agree with @11. I don't think Newt's actually serious about being elected Prez. The closer he actually gets to a nomination, the more of his bomb-throwing will come out.
18
@14, Actually "Yosemite Sam" is running but he dropped dramatically in the polls after he couldn't remember the third agency of government he would eliminate.

@Paul, Cut Newt some slack. This is just his jobs plan. He's going to get everyone employed making smart bombs and bullets. John Bolton will start a ton of wars that will keep us at full employment for decades.

Whenever I hear someone say how terrorism is an equal or greater threat as the USSR during the cold war I just have to gape in amazement. The very worst possible thing that terrorists could do (aside from sparking us to invade more countries) is carry a small suitcase nuke into a city. That would be horrible and would kill tens of thousands of people. The very worst possible thing that the USSR could have done was launch enough nukes to turn the entire surface of the planet to glass and vaporize all life on the planet. Anyone who compares the terrorists to the USSR should have their head examined and be banned from politics or the media.
