Qing emperors had a lot of pretending to do. First and foremost was pretending that the Manchu language was still relevant.

My first association was Michael Jackson's paintings of himself as various messianic figures.

The Yongzheng emperor is my favorite! He went back into the records and changed his brothers' names to more insulting things, and would write things like, "This memorial is extremely boring" as his official comment on important documents. On the other hand, he was the most anti-corruption emperor the Qing had, and feverishly obsessed with improving government, and unlike his son, he generally promoted officials on basis of merit, not ethnicity. An interesting guy all around.

Between this and the earlier post about Hong Lou Meng, I've been very happy to see Slog posting things relevant to my studies.
