The most recent polls show both Boxer and Brown ahead and expanding their leads, now that CA voters are paying attention.
Support for pot legalization is far understated. How many people are declining to answer "Yes" to unknown pollsters calling out of the blue? As they are hearing more of their friends, families, and neighbors openly support legalization, the numbers will grow. Proposition 19 will attract many Dem leaning voters who would otherwise stay home.
East Coast pundits and Democratic Party strategists underestimate how much of a winner medical marijuana and legalization are in the West. Even when it loses, thousands of new or infrequent Dem voters show up. The next time the issue is brought up, they feel stronger. Thousands become used to the idea in the meantime and realize it's not the doomsday predicted by opponents. (I think the same is happening with gay marriage and rights)
Last time I went to California and visited my 87-year-old grandmother, a very middle-of-the-road type lady who grew up on a farm in the midwest, somehow the topic of conversation came around to marijuana legalization. I can't imagine she has ever smoked a joint in her life, but she recognizes that legalization is inevitable and pragmatically thinks it's a good idea since she can see that prohibition causes more problems than it prevents (I didn't ask if she came to this conclusion after my cousin, her grandson, burned down his dorm room trying to grow hydroponic in his closet and got expelled from the university). She also reads the newspaper and is smart enough to figure out that the marijuana industry is the only thing keeping the local economy afloat where she lives.
I remember seeing Jerry Brown led around by a leash attached to his PA by a stunningly beautiful Mexican-American Maiden in a silver corset decorated with black octopus tentacles on a bad night in Sacremento some several years ago.
We shall see, we shall see.
