One thing corporations don't like is being accused of bigotry.
That's why all the age discrimination ticks me off and I always write complaints to corporate headquarters when I feel I'm being discriminated against.
For example, people who write threads about "old guys". I definitely make sure to target their advertisers for this vile form of discrimination.
...so that I can promptly ignore that obvious stupidity when it comes.
Because, having heard that argument before, I think we're all smart enough to realize that the guy Dan's attacking - unlike Constance McMillen - has complete control over the quality that is causing him to be attacked.
Unlike with Constance's sexual orientation, Eddie Hood has the power to choose to stop hurting Constance right this very moment. He is choosing to hate and hurt people for who they are; and for that choice he will suffer consequences. He will be brought to justice, for it is him that denied justice to others.
Constance IS a lesbian. Constance will never be able to decide stop loving other women, nor should she. Her gayness is hurting nobody, and those "offended" by her expression of love for another woman can simply choose to ignore it.

In the same way that say a middle aged man should not be made fun of for being naturally attracted to 20-ish women, but yet SLOG and its authors are prejudiced against this form of heterosexually each and every day.

Meanwhile, I applaud Allstate's effort to bring bigoted, hateful people to justice among their ranks. It is good business; but it's also the right thing to do.

You may be aware that an Allstate agent by the name of Eddie Hood (a082315@allstate.com) has recently represented himself as an Allstate agent on a public schools website in Itawamba County, Mississippi, (where he serves as member of the County School Board), acted to violate the civil rights of a young woman, Constance McMillan. I am a current Allstate customer, and this deeply distresses me and makes me wonder if this sort of policy is representative of Allstate, or other representatives of Allstate I may expect to encounter. If so, I doubt that I can further put my faith and money in the Allstate company. Further, there are indications in media reports that this same Eddie Hood has been evasive in State court about his motives and his role in the matter of the the discrimination against this young woman. This also raises my concerns about his association with Allstate.
I am a loyal, paying customer of Allstate. Please address these concerns. I do not desire to change my insurance company, but I also cannot abide by the tactics that have been employed by this person under Allstate's employment.

Writing to him to express your opinion of his decision regarding the prom--entirely proper. Writing to the school board--again proper.
Just because something is a choice, doesn't make it right to persecute someone. Religions are choices. Bisexuals can choose to date same sex. Being green is a choice. Not having children is a choice. None of these choices should be discriminated against. Just because something is inborn, doesn't make it right either. I firmly believe most pedophiles are born, not made; and yet if they express their sexuality, I'll convict them without hesitation. This evil mobbishness our race indulges is also inborn, nonetheless to be fought, for civilization's sake.

As for persecuting this man at his job. He shouldn't have used his business email for his public one. And remember, we are consumers of a service based product. If this man is indictive of All State, and we are clients of the same company, could we be denied coverage based on our insurance representatives bias, or a bias held by the company itself as policy. As consumers, we have the right to know if we will be denied what we've paid for, and to switch to a company that doesn't endorse discrimination. The former tactic is known as a boycott. Hitting bigots where it hurts the most, the wallet.
But there is difference between these choices - murder, robbery, and bigotry - and the choices you mention, like choosing a religion, being kinky, not having children, being green, whatever. The difference is that murder, robbery, and bigotry hurt other people. Choosing a religion, consenting to kinky sex, and not having children does not hurt another person, not like murder, robbery and acts of bigotry do.
I'll admit it was a noble try though. I'm curious if someone can actually conceive a reasonable argument to protect bigots from the consequences of their actions. So far, they've come up pretty short.
And till recently, I'll admit those of us on the side of human dignity have sometimes done a bad job of articulating why we think it's okay to go after someone for bigoted actions and not okay to go after someone for being gay.
If this man lets his bigotry affect his decisions as administrator of a public institution, how is this any guarantee that he will not discriminate against people under the cover of a private company?

These were guys who had been fighting in open treason agaionst the government to uphold slavery. And had killed a quarter million American soldiers with their own hands.

This nation has worked through some tough issues.
Heated disagreements.
Strong emotions.
By and large we have mnanaged to respect each other even while disagreeing.

That attitude is a big part of what made us great.
Trying to get people fired from their job because you disagree with them is uncivil and inconsistent with the spirit of democracy.
It is a terribly destructive turn in our public discourse.
Hate is not a cure for hate.
Intolerance is not an antidote to intolerance.
It just gives you more Hate and Intolerance.
Sometimes there are no good guys in a fight.
And corrupt means WILL corrupt the end.

Contacting All State was the right thing to do, in order to give them a chance to decide how they would be viewed in this matter, and to decide on consequences for his possible violation of their policies. End of story.

Anyway, this is all completely tangential to the issue.
We don't tolerate people who hurt other people. Doing so would actually be intolerance. It's like saying: "It was bad that these racists killed these civil rights workers, but if we put them on trial, aren't we just prosecuting them for racism?"
This whole argument has always been stupid because their central claim is that we should be tolerant of people. If this is so, there never should be an Eddie Hood. It's self-referential; and has never made sense. Basically, they want it to be okay for Hood to penalize Constance for being gay, but not okay to penalize Hood for penalizing Constance. You can't do that. It's nonsense teabaggery of the worst kind.
Their problem is supposedly the "act of penalizing." If so, why should Eddie Hood get a pass for penalizing Constance? And if he does, why shouldn't we get a pass for penalizing Eddie Hood? I mean, you'd now be intolerant of our intolerance of his intolerance. C'mon guys, you know it's bullshit.
