Damn, that was spot on, Bethany.
2
Wow, if that is true, it dramatically changes the story here.
3
Wow - what a fucking dumbass.
4
Ha! She might as well have gift-wrapped that quote and handed it directly to Dan.
5
Whoa. So, I guess he truly did nothing wrong as regards his marriage.

Stupid woman.
6
gosh, does that mean he lied to the public when he said it was a one time thing? golly, i'm surprised that the guy who thinks my marriage would be too dangerous to tradition doesn't include his own fuckery as a risk to traditional marriage. i mean, it's not like his sexual choices put an end to any traditional marriage.

he needs to rot.

this has been putting me off the hinges all day. i don't care about their marriage or their choices, but he changed his fucking marriage vows for his own sake and has made a career out of fucking with other people's marriages.

formerly, i just enjoyed his shame, now i'm psychotically angry, and want to punch him until my arms get tired.

"...wants to get on with her life. So do we, Jenny Sanford—so do we."

and how.

damn Jenny for posting this again on Slog.

damn her to Hell!

doesn't Jenny know we just want to get on with our lives?

and not keep reading about her on Slog??

I guess "got past" means "willfully failed to understand."

Whoops.

I love it when people go on national media to complain about how the media won't leave them alone. Reminds me of Princess Diana.
11
Obviously Sanford should have asked Dan for advice before tying the knot.

I don't think it was in my vows either, but neither was the "Who gives this woman" or "obey" part. The lovely Methodist minister that married us didn't use them but offered to add them in if we wanted, personal morality was stressed, though. I'm not Methodist, so I don't know if that is common or not. (My home church was already booked and they graciously allowed us to marry there.)

Hah! Fnarf @10.

That's what I was thinking. If she's so so sick of all the media attention, WHY THE FUCK IS SHE WRITING A TELL-ALL BOOK!?!
14
These two idiots were made for eachother...

Conservative men want to have multiple partners. They don't want wives to have multiple partners and they don't want gays to have sex, but men having mulitple partners is a conservative value. Has been for thousands of years. What bothers conservative men so much is women and gays want what they have; sex on their own terms.

@12: I think that the form of the vows depends a lot on the officiating pastor and on the couple's wishes.

There is the formal, religious wedding ceremony template "A Service of Christian Marriage" in the United Methodist red hymnal, which includes this part:

Declaration by the man and the woman

[Pastor to the woman]

[Name], will you have [Name] to be your husband, to live together in holy marriage?
Will you love him, comfort him, honor and keep him, in sickness and in health,
and forsaking all others, be faithful to him as long as you both shall live?

Then there is the later part which goes:

Exchange of vows

[Man to woman]

In the name of God,
I, [Name], take you, [Name], to be my wife,
to have and to hold,
from this day forward,
for better, for worse,
for richer, for poorer,
in sickness and in health,
to love and to cherish,
until we are parted by death.
This is my solemn vow.

Again, though, this is just a general template. It really comes down to what the couple want to say.

Please wait...
