I'm guessing his new show will last about as long as Rosie's latest.
2
I still hate Rosie more than Jay.
3
Don't forget, Jimmy Fallon is taking Conan's old show. That should be awful.

DAMN YOU JOHNNY CARSON!!!! Why did you fucking retire and then DIE?!?!?!?!?!?
5
What the hell is on at 10pm? Hopefully it'll be Leno's last gasp. I'm not a fan of Leno, but he really seems as over it as we are of him.

Jimmy Fallon = the opposite of what is good and funny. "Look at me? Wasn't what I did just funny and cute?". No. Not at all. Chris Kattan or Tim Meadows or any of his SNL contemporaries would do a better job.

Conan is best when he's being weird - his writers strike shows are some of his best performances of the last few years, I think. If he's expected to cater to the built-in 11:30 audience, it's going to flatten all this is good about him.

Also, for fuck's sake, the Colbert Report is on, so I'll never actually know how this works out.
6
Shameful confession: I absolutely love Headlines on The Tonight Show. I put up with Leno for 10 minutes on Mondays because it's that funny to me. I like laughing at stupid people, what can I say.
7
@6: To be fair, Carson started the headlines thing. It's a property of the show. Now just imagine when Conan gets them!

The sad thing is that Jay Leno, visiting Dave Letterman, on the old, funny Late Night Show -- was really, really funny!

However, I don't blame him as it seems that the humor quotient of audiences goes down, the earlier the show. Even Letterman succumbed to being popular, versus being funny with his move to 11:30.
9
(blood-curdling scream as I claw out my own eyes)
10
@7. Really? I didn't know that... that makes me feel a little less shameful.
11
Since E.R. is in its final death throws, NBC had nothing of note at 10p.m. any day of the week. I actually predict this will be a hit, though I won't watch it. Except for The Close during the summer and new episodes of South Park, I can't thonk of anything I watch at 10. I am either, blogging, slogging, or sleeping.
12
The fucking fuck. Why can't they just keep things the way they fucking were?? The old way, I could watch Letterman, then Conan, and then when I got bored of Conan's celebrity interview, switch to Craig Ferguson. Now I'm going to have to choose between watching Letterman and Conan. MotherFUCKERS.

WHY DO PEOPLE WATCH LENO?!
13
Leno can be funny. Conan (O'brien... not barbarian) isn't funny at all. He writes funny things, but he can't deliver. Letterman's kinda hit-or-miss.
14
Triumph the Insult Comic Dog should take over the 12:30 slot.
15
Jay Leno was un-funny because NBC censored the $hit out of him. I predict "The Tonight Show" will remain sucky because of this.
16
I think that I finally felt okay about my love for The O.C. was when Summer started dating that unfunny tool who other people thought was hilarious, and he idolized Leno, and Seth and Sandy were like "Leno??? Seriously? Who likes Leno????" And I said, oh fictional characters, you are so, so right, and I love you.

Anyways, I will not watch the 10pm show, and I think it's kinda lame he got it at all.
17
Am I the only one who thinks neither Leno, Letterman, or O'Brien is even a tiny bit funny? Letterman hasn't been funny for a decade. Craig Ferguson is a little bit funny, sometimes, though he always looks like he's about to completely freak out and run screaming from the studio.

The guy I think is funny is Graham Norton. Oh, and Joel McHale, in a slightly different format. But for big-time American talk shows, Stewart and Colbert have rendered the network guys utterly obsolete.
18
Where's the love for Chelsea Lately???
19
I just have to say that, in my opinion, the unfunniest person on TV is Andy Samberg. Dick in a Box, while funny, turned against us. It gave Samberg WAY too much time on SNL. Also, speaking of SNL, Keenan Thompson sucks, too. Love me some Kristen Wiig, though.
20
@17,

I love Norton, but he should never be on network television. The neutering they would demand would be tragic and could easily render him as dull as Leno/Letterman.
21
I doubt that Conan will last very long as Tonight Show host. There is something about him and his humor that is funny as you doze off to sleep after 12:30am that is not that funny at 11:30pm If Conan does fail NBC's solution will be to bring back Leno who I never thought would last of his first year.
22
Unfunniest comments thread ever.

#17: Those are my feelings entirely.

For about two years, I used to plan my whole day about getting back to my apartment in time to see Letterman (1985-86).

The 11:30 show is vague reminder of how great it used to be.

Carson was only funny when he had a really funny guest on, but you had to wade through the other 90 and then 60 minutes to hear something funny.

Conan O'Brien is a horrible, horrible simp -- just a nasty human being. My only joy is watching male pattern baldness gradually erode his cowlick over time.

Leno as guest -- very funny. Leno as host -- not funny.

Jimmy Kimmel....can be very funny (Unnecessary Censorhip), but some how not always funny....tends toward the childish side rather than tight comedy.

All the other guys -- egregiously bad and unfunny.

I gave up on late night talk shows being funny a long time ago and switched to watching funny movies and now reading crazy blogs on the Internet. Much more funny than t.v.

I haven't ready truly funny comedy book since "Without Feathers" (well, maybe a Conspiracy of Dunces...).

Saturday Night Live, strangely enough, has gotten funny again! In fact, maybe funny for the first time since it's always been overrated as a comedy show and is more a cultural phenomenon. Jizzed in my Pants? Fantastic! Virgina Horsen -- it harkens back to the best absurdism of Second City TV! Very good episode last Saturday...

Real comedy movies also staged a comeback this year with Tropic Thunder and Pineapple Express. The former may win an Oscar, and the later deserves one.
24
You gotta admit that Letterman is funnier than the shaken he was right after his surgery. Leno's just an elbow-rubbing, really rich biker.
25
Leno's standup is solid and worked at 11:30 in a way that Masturbating Bear never, ever will.

I'm actually quite sad to hear that Headlines belongs to the Tonight Show, because there's no way Conan O'Brien can do that well.

I wonder where Kevin Eubanks will end up?
26
Conan= awesomeness!
Finally I don't have to stay up forever to watch him.

I've always hated Leno, but I kinda like hm lately.
27
This is about all I've got to say about that.
28
While I never really watch any of these shows, my curiosity was peaked when I heard that The Roots are/were to become the house band on [whatever Jimmy Fallon's show might be called].
I couldn't care less what happens at 10PM on NBC. Or 9. Or 11. Or 3:15 on a Saturday. I just stream The Office at my whim. Hmph.
29
I actually saw Leno a couple years ago doing standup at a big event. He was much funnier in person than on the Tonight Show. Partly because he swore a lot, which really surprised me. Still, Leno, Letterman, Conan, all of those guys are mildly amusing at best, and utterly boring at worst. Conan will be even more dumbed down taking over the Tonight Show.

I agree with Fnarf. Stewart and Colbert are a million times funnier than any of these guys could ever be.
30
You're all a bunch of Shakespearean theatre snobs who look down on all television, especially O'Brien, which is why I am giggling while I write this.

Oh sure, you can run around on stage saying things like "My Liege" and "Methinks" in that ridiculous Shakespearean accent that sounds so fucking pretentious it makes me want to reach for the nearest bottle of Clorox to guzzle down every time I hear it, but you wouldn't know original humor and wit if it bit you in your boxers and man-purse. Conan O'Brien is one of the ten funniest men on stage, but you people, who think movies about people pushing a piano up and down the street is moving and deep, will never appeciate it.

I really like sports too, and I love it when you male theatre pussies start whining about how football fans beat their wives.

I could go on, but I think I've made my point.
31
18 -- Thank you! I was searching for a Chelsea mention, but found none other than yours. And then no replies until me.

In terms of raw, non-news related Hollywood humor, Chelsea's it. Her humor is lewd, mean and her rhythm (especially in interviews) sometimes makes me uneasy, but she's edgy, smart and self-aware. Plus she's a major fan of the gays (and visa versa).
32
Damn it. WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO LAW AND ORDER!?!?!? Isn't that on at 10 sometimes? Maybe NBC will get rid of their stupid reality shows? Ugh. When I watch tv, I demand entertainment. I don't want to see a bunch of jerks winning money that I rightfully deserve. Maybe Jay Leno's move to 10 will push those shows to 7pm or something.
33
@27
I've got a better article for you: http://www.theonion.com/content/node/286…
34
@33--I like the Onion article. Why is it that those borish folks who won't own a TV always feel a need to tell you about it?
35
@18 - Kristen Wiig????? she is going to single handedly kill that show. 9/10 times i FF through her skits because they are unbearable.

but yes, in general, late night TV has no relevance.
36
Carlos Mencia is the unfunniest man on television. He doesn't appear on late night, which is good, but he still appears on TV, which is very, very bad.
37
It's the end of network TV as we know it. (And I feel fine).

#30 - that was about as funny as a Leno monologue.
38
I love Conan. I sort of feel like this is a slap in the face to him.
39
It's amazing that Kimmel is still funny in that format, and just highlights how lazy Leno has become. Leno was really funny on Letterman, but he sucked on the Tonight Show from day 1. I like Conan, but Triumph is all I tune in for lately. Chelsea Lately is a pile of pooh - never laughed once. Joel McHale is briliant on The Soup. That's the only show I actually watch weekly. Californication is the funniest show (far beyond the juvenile Entourage), but it's on Showtime so that may not count here.
40
I still miss Almost Live.
41
I also still miss Almost Live.

But Leno and Conan are mostly a waste of time - they used to be a lot better "In The Year 2000".
42
What about Carson Daly? So anorexic. and so not funny.

Please wait...
