Dexter Holland Won't Explain That Really, REALLY Shitty Offspring Song

Posted by on Mon, Jun 25, 2012 at 2:49 PM

In a recent interview with OC Weekly, Dexter Holland said this about the band's HORRIFICALLY BAD song "Cruising California (Bumpin' In My Trunk)":

People have asked me since it is a different type of sound for us, "Are you trying to make a pop song?" or "Are you trying to take a piss on a pop song?" I like not answering that question. I like that we are on the line about that. If it makes you wonder, that is a good thing.

Is it a good thing? Wondering what the fuck you're doing doesn't make me respect it any more. It doesn't make the song any less terrible. Asking questions about bad things doesn't stop the bad things from being bad.

So, since Mr. Holland isn't coming clean about the band's intentions, let's have an official Line Out poll!

(If you need a refresher, the video is after the jump.)

Offspring? Really?
They were a cheezy 4th generation watered down pop-punk band when they started, and that was 28 years ago.

This the pathetic attempt of a guy who will be 50 very soon, trying to be "relevant" to the kids, by trying that new fangled rap stuff...

(I am not against old people- I am one, and there are lots of old rockers who can still kick it- I hear Lou Reed carries a sword, and threatened to cut Lars Ulrich's balls off with it. Lou is old, old enough to be Dexter's dad, and he still out rocks em while dozing in drooling haze)

I've heard worse. This really isn't that bad, compared to a lot of what's on the radio.

Nope. Disagree. Listen to this song in context on the album, it's definitely The Offspring saying "Let's make a beach party song about California". They are a playful group of guys, if you can enjoy the song for what it is it's a really good time. Last summer they played this album's first single all over Top 40 in LA but *not* this song -- definitely wasn't a popularity play.

So says I, the die-hard Offspring fan, who generally has mostly KEXP-esque musical tastes.
