“This is like the 69th time we've played this place and it’s so weird that you can't drink,” said vocalist Tony Foresta during a brief pause in their all-ages set at El Corazon last night. “I like drinking, you like drinking, so we should all be drinking. This song is called Beer Pressure "

Even without beers in hand, Municipal Waste raged harder than most. A circle pit straight out of a Slayer concert (circa 1986) ignited as soon as the opening riff to “Intro/Deathripper” started. A fan decked out in classic thrash uniform — denim vest, Iron Maiden back patch, huge white high top sneakers — ignored the bold “no stage diving” sign and flipped off the stage monitors, inspiring dozens of others to do the same.
A huge purple banner with a battleground of dead zombies and the bands Metallica-esque logo shining in bright green hung behind the members as they paused between songs.
"We should write another song about Bush,” Foresta said. “Oh wait we already did, it’s called Boner City."
Though they may seem like a joke, Municipal Waste certainly proved they have the chops to back up their endless stream of dick and fart jokes. Guitarist “Ryan Waste” sped through riff after riff on his flashy custom “MW AX” Strangio guitar as drummer Dave Witte pounded away.
By far, “Born to Party” received the wildest reaction of the night, but how couldn’t it? The simple chorus of “Municipal Waste is gonna fuck you up!” was built for drunken sing-alongs.
Who knows if Municipal Waste would garner any real attention without the zombie obsession and party-till-you die attitude. While the music certainly could stand on its own, the fact that all four members are true-to-life thrash metal comic book characters onstage is what makes them stand out from the batch of generic 80’s thrash metal revisionists.
Plus, if you took away all their songs about dicks, weed, beer or partying they’d only be able to play a 10 minute set.
