I believe the "Mercedes" peace symbol is actually either an older version, or the original that was altered in the late 1950's.

In any case both types have been used more or less interchangeably, although the "semaphore" symbol (so called because the designer incorporated very simplified semaphore codes of "N" & "D" to stand for "nuclear disarmament") tends to be the more familiar - and popular version.
